Hi ALL YOU MILITARY GURUS ... I found this in a junk shop last week in Evesham and am trying to work out where and when it is ... with my very limited knowledge I thought it looked like a Frenchman inspecting British troops ... could it be Joffre and do the shop signs suggest where it is ... Thanks
Poll ...on a sabbatical from the restoration board ;D ;D
-
oh and here is a close up version of the suspects in black and white !
-
I don't think that is Joffre...too young I reckon!!!
I am still looking into this one...I have goodness knows how many pictures to go through...
It could be post war when the Kitchener bns were presented with their colours...the town square looks a bit German to me
-
And the writing on the shop is German - something "stube" = "shop"
The man in front is wearing a French style cap although the rest appear to be British.
meles
-
I agree he's French....But not Joffre I think...
Just an inspecting Allied officer...
-
The sign is german for Exchange Bureau...wechselstube .... sorry ..lost my umlaut on this keyboard ! ;D ;D
-
would agree with Scrim, in that this not being Joffre as this office is far younger than Joffre, not only that but in all the photograph's that I have seen of Joffre he sports a white bushy moustache.

Rhineland post WW1
General Jean Degoutte, the Commanding Officer of the French Army of Occupation, does it for me.

Now that does look promising FD .. thanks ... I wish I could make out the BADGES ON THE UNIFORMS OF THE SOLDIERS ON PARADE .. I 'll have a look at a a really large scan and see if I can retrieve a shape that might give you a clue ..
-
Having another look, might the British officer behind Degoutte's left shoulder be his British opposite number, Field Marshall Sir William Robertson?
Have a look at:

If Nero fiddled whilst Rome burned - guess what has occupied me this evening.
The location of the photo is Cologne Cathedral.
Check out these links:

(scroll down to bild 7486) the soldiers are facing you with backs to the Cathedral. The camera was pointing at the building on the left by the blue vehicle.

(here is the scene in 1945 and that dome on the Hauptbahnhof survived the bombs!)

My old oppo Nero never had trouble with his cut and past, did he.
Hello Scrimmers - if you agree the people and places, do you know the way into an order of battle for the British Army of Occupation (if that is the correct title)?
Cheers
Dave

Indeed...colours are being paraded...and with an unconditional surrender, the prerogative of "flags flying, bands playing and bayonets fixed" is that of the successful combatants....
