Would someone please do a look up on the 1871 census for John & Williamina Matthew, born about 1833 & 1842? Should have children William, born 1864, age about 7, Jane, born 1866, age about 5, Mary, born 1869, age about 2.
Also a look up on the 1881 census for Jane Matthew about 15 yrs old. Jane, William, & Mary don't seem to be with their parents on this census. This is the information I have from the 1881 census:
Dwelling: West Coldstream
Census Place: Drumoak Aberdeen
John Matthew, head, 41 yrs old, ag lab, married, born Fyvie, Aberdeen
Williamina Matthew, ag labs wife, 38 yrs old, married, born Old Machar
Janet Matthew, daughter, scholar, 9 yrs old, born Stracathro (Marykirk) Forfar
John Matthew, son, scholar, 6 yrs old, born Marykirk Kincardine
James Matthew, son, 1 yr old, born Old Machar Aberdeen
Thank you for any help

This is really frustrating as we are not allowed access to the original images and I suspect the following entry may be your family. Without checking the original census entry this is difficult to prove but as Janet was born Stracathro it may be a clue.
The problems are - is Mattle really Matthew
is Katherina really Williamina
You can see the original here www.scotlandspeople.co.uk but it is a pay per view site
I can only give you the commercial transcription :-\

Putting on my guessing hat again - this may be William - unless someone else can find something better ???
Again the original image will need to be checked for mistranscription of the name Matthew but
there is a Duncan connection from the 1871

I can't spot him in 1891 or 1901 but that's hardly surprising judging by the state of the transcribing on these census.
I wonder if he either died, had another first name or was illegimate and then mum married.
Who knows - hope someone does and posts soon ;D

Its a good possibility Peter is the son of Mary. Jane Matthew/Murray/Briggs is my gr grandmother & as far as I know she didn't have any Peters, William is her 1st child born in 1889.
Thanks again,
Lisa
