Title: Copies of microfiche from County Records Office
Post by: Roobarb on Thursday 29 May 08 21:04 BST (UK)
I've had a look through the boards at topics such as 'Wasted resources' etc. but cannot find this particular one, so here goes:

I have a number of copies of microfiche records from parish registers, which not only show the details of my ancestors but all the others on the same page. Perhaps we could have a board specifically for this, where names and dates could be listed and Rootschatters who are interested in obtaining a copy could P.M. their email address to the poster and then receive a copy of the record. I would be quite happy for more than one person to get the benefit of my 50p outlay!
Well Mods, what do you think? And would other Rootschatters be interested?

isn't that going to be a duplication of the Online Parish Clerk resources?

(i donated my transcription to their site(s)).

There doesn't seem to be an Online Parish Clerk for North Yorkshire Pauline, and I don't think (from what I have read) that all counties are covered. Just thought it might be nice to have the facility on Rootschat.

There have been rumours about North yorks (& others) for some time.

and also freereg of course. http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/Search.pl

North Yorkshire is such a massive county that even if the rumours are true, it's going to take some time. And Freereg is okay but not quite the same as having the original written record is it?

Come on Rootschatters, isn't anyone else interested?

Support would be anyone actually doing it!
There's already a  resource board for each county, why not put them there. It's been done before, both by myself  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,239816.0.html and I've certainly seen others who have done similar.

This isnt an area I usually visit.

Hi
Are you sure you are not contravening copyright here?   If they are only 50p I would rather the money went to the Society who took the trouble to produce them for us in the first place.    Though I suppose not everyone has a fiche reader - but they can take them to their local library.
Just my own feelings - don't let me stop the rest of you!

Thanks for the support folks! I agree that they should go on the resource board for the county, what I had in mind was a dedicated subsection on that board.
Not sure about copyright, I scan mine and often send them to rellies I have found, so it would be the same thing. I didn't mean the fiche, it's a printout from the fiche. Some of my ancestors came from Devon and I can't get to the records office there as it's such a long way. I would be delighted if some of my lot turned up! The 50p goes to the Records Office as they produced them, not the FHS.

do you need a reader to read them?

No Toni. Sorry, I haven't expressed muself very well, I should have said that I have printouts which were taken from microfiche records. I scan them and save as a jpeg so I can send to any of my rellies. They're actually just like the parish records you get on the new LDS site. No doubt they'll all appear there eventually but if other folks are anything like me, they won't be patient enough to wait!

I think I will go ahead and 'advertise' them on the appropriate county board and see if I have found anyone's long lost ancestors. I just think it's a shame for things to go to waste because of people not being able to visit the appropriate records office.

I've just received scanned copies of some microfiche from a recently discovered relative, for the Fradley family in Staffordshire, only thing is I can't quite make out all the column headings across the top.I'm okay up to the one headed Town,Parish, but after that there come three columns with a single letter as a header and dates in the columns...can anyone tell me what these three columns are? I'm thinking the letters are B C and then the third could be anything I can't make it out at all. Some of these columns instead of a date just say Child. Any help would be massively appreciated.

Cheers, Linda Rhead

I was going to attach a copy but they've been sent to me as BMP files not Jpegs..anybody know how to change to Jpeg?.... :-[

Hi Linda
Sorry for the delay in replying to this and your P.M., I haven't been on Rootschat for months (it's been summer!).
I assume you're referring to baptisms as you mention 'child'? The ones I have don't have dates in the last three columns, burials don't either. I think the layout varies throughout the centuries, what period of time are you referring to?

Sorry, don't know how to change a bitmap to a jpeg.

It's okay Roobarb, I've sorted it now, in fact I now have copies of the original handwritten baptism, marriage & burial parish records for Gayton,Staffs from 1593 -1837,plus three other Staffs parishes in book form.

Thanks anyway,

Linda

Go for it!!  Perhaps it can be extended to other areas too. Remember the Lincolnshire OPC which was excellent has folded, leaving something of a void.

Hi

Just found your post, is there an OPC for North, East and West Yorkshire (no offence South Yorkshire, not many ancestors there), mine are scattered all over some straying across into Lancs, Lincs, Norfolk and Leics on my Mum's side.

Julie

I don't have access to a microfiche reader there is one in the library but most of our records are in storage until Harrogate reopens it's main library next year.
