Title: Sunderland obituaries
Post by: Squirrel69 on Monday 23 June 08 22:11 BST (UK)
Is there a way to find obits for the Sunderland area for the years of 1954 and 1955? The first obit would be for Isabella Leybourne, she died on 20th April, 1954. The name might be spelled Laybourne. The second is for Charles William Leybourne. He died on 17 April, 1955. They were my great grandparents and so far I have been unable to find any obituaries on line. Thanks!

Assuming there were obituaries, then they would be in the Sunderland Echo. The Sunderland Local Studies Centre at the City Library and Arts Centre, has copies from 1873.

You won't find them online  :(

:( Darn! Thank you for your help. I will e-mail the Sunderland Echo and see if they can help. I am in the US, so there is no way I can go to look them up in person. Thanks again!

There are not obituaries as such in the Echo, only DEATHS announcements. I have put an extract from an 1960s Echo at

so that you can see the sort of information you will get.

Thank you for that info Stan. If the Echo has the death announcements, it could aid my search for their graves. Every little bit helps!  :)
