Looking for Allans in Aberdeen. My great grandfather, James Allan was supposed to have been born in Aberdeen about 1850 - 52 but moved south to London aged 2 years approx. Was known to be in in Wallsend, on the Tyne, in his 20's ( he was a plater in the shipyards) and twice became mayor of Wallsend thereafter. He married Elizabeth Hicks. His children were Jack Stanley, ( well known local football player) Amy, Elizabeth known as Lillie, Wallace and Hilda Leonora. Does anyone known who James's father and mother were. The problem is there are too many James Allans in and around Aberdeen at that time.

Do you know if he had any siblings? There is a family of Scottish born Allans in Northumberland in 1861, with a James of the right sort of age. Parents, Charles and Mary, siblings Alexander, Charles and William.
Longbenton, Tynemouth.

It would be a good idea for you to obtain James and Elizabeth's marriage cert - District Newcastle upon Tyne/ Vol. 10b/ Page 129 in 1879. The certificate should include the fathers' names (and occupations) for James and Elizabeth to enable you to confirm you have the right family in the earlier censuses.

Hi, I believe James Allan's father was also called James and was from Aberdeen and was something to do with ship building. You can see the problem - there are loads of James Allans in Aberdeen.
