Hello, I've only just found this website and it has inspired me to try and 'clear a blockage' as it were!
My grandfather William Oliver Deadman is shown on 1871 Census as being 4 and living with his grandmother in Sutton Courtenay. I cannot trace a birth certificate although I do have his marriage certificate and his death certificate.
In order to find his parents I can only think of his baptism record.
Can anyone help please?

Welcome to Rootschat !
Unfortunately the Sutton Courtney Parish Register trancription - courtesy of the Oxfordshire Family History Society, stops at 1867. William is not shown i'm afraid, although there are masses of DEADMANs shown in the register.

Thanks for looking. Yes Sutton Courtenay seems to have been quite a 'nest of Deadmans'. We visited earlier in the year and managed to meet a couple but it was not possible to view the church records.
Is there any advice on where I could next try?

It may be worth getting the Oxford Record Office to do a search of the PR for you (I think they do carry out this sort of service), see:

I can't see a birth record in the GRO index

I've just had a look through the complete GRO index 1866 - 1868. There is no William DEADMAN shown in either Berkshire or Oxfordshire. The nearest record I could see was for William Owen in Wandsworth in 1867.

do you not have his fathers name and occ from his marriage cert
-
Wondering if he may possibly be the son(illig) of Jane Deadman as
there does'nt appear to be any Deadman sons old enough to be
his father.
Do you want earlier census details?
Jackie.

On his marriage certificate his fathers name is given as Charles Deadman, a labourer.
His grandmother Eliza Middleton had a busy time. She married Darius Deadman in 1843 and they had Hannah(1844),Jane Tubb(1848), Mary (1851) before he died in January 1851. She gave birth to Henry Baker Deadman in 1852 and on the birth certificate named a Henry Baker. She then became housekeeper to Isaac Perry and produced Thomas Darius Deadman (1855), William Deadman (1859), Rosetta Deadman (1861) and Albert Edward Deadman(1864) before marrying their father Isaac in 1872. Rosetta gave birth to Eliza Florence Deadman (1880) at the Union Workhouse but both were back with Eliza by the 1881 Census.
I thought Jane Tubb may have been the mother as she did have John McLean Deadman in 1870 but did not name a father on his birth certificate! (Such going ons)!
Oops Jackie...just seen your post!

Sometimes the clue as to who the father may have been,is the
childs 2nd christian name, this has happened twice in my family, but
must stress not always the case!
Jackie.

Thank you for the suggestion but I cannot connect with any Olivers either.
I have strong feelings about Jane Tubb Deadman but cannot settle without further proof which is why I thought of the baptism records!
He may also have been in the young offenders institution according to the 1881 Census.

Yes, thank you,I do have that information. I just don't like the uncertainty of my grandfathers birth.
Would I be able to find his baptism records at Sutton Courtenay church?

Su,
Sutton Courtney is a little village surrounded by other little villages and nearby is Abingdon.
I have PRs for these areas so will have a search of them for you.
