Title: Completed Henry "Hent" WALKER b1848
Post by: Walks on Tuesday 23 September 08 16:48 BST (UK)
I'm searching for any info on Henry "Hent" Walker, born (I think) 1848 in Leeds - maybe Wortley (Lower Wortley?).

He married Mary Hannah Holdsworth (b 1849) but I don't know when or where.
They had 7 children: Emily, Alice, Joseph, Arthur, Samual, Alfred and John William.
Joseph was born 1877ish.
The nickname "Hent" was recalled by my father - but I have no evidence whatsoever.

Absolutely ANY info would be greatly appreciated - especially HIS parents or his occupation in 1880-90. (I'd be very pleased to get pointers on where to look).
Many thanks - Walks

L, L & S - you've answered ALL starting questions - its clear I need to ammend what few bits of info I thought I had.
Henry "Hent" Walker, b1858/9 - Clay Miner to Railway Engine Brick Setter.
Mary Hannah Holdsworth, b1856/7/8

Was the census taken o the same date (month) each 10years? That would still not account for a three-year spread of birth dates for Mary Hannah Holdsworth - maybe just an honest mistake(?)

Does anyone know if "Hent" is a common local abbrev of Henry - I have only ever heard it applied to HW.

Again, sincere thanks.

Hi Walks

The census is taken at a similar time every ten years... here are the dates -

1841 6th June
1851 30th March
1861 7th April
1871 2nd April
1881 3rd April
1891 5th April
1901 31st March
1911 2nd April  Not yet released
1921 19th June  Not yet released
1931 26th April  Destroyed by fire in WWII
1939 29th Sept For issue of ID cards - except service personnel.
1941 -- No census due to WWII
1951 8th April  Not yet released
1961 23rd April  Not yet released
1971 25th April  Not yet released
1981 5th April  Not yet released
1991 21st April  Not yet released
2001 29th April  Not yet released

Hope that helps.

It's quite common for people's ages to vary by a couple of years in most census. Ages on the 1841 census can appear confusing unless you know that ages up to fifteen are listed exactly but ages over fifteen were rounded down to the nearest five years. If you’re not aware of this fact trying to trace birth certificates can become unnecessarily difficult.

I've not heard of 'Hent' as an abbreviation for Henry before.

If you ordered this marriage certificate you would get Mary's age at marriage - I do have a female relative who lied and took ten years off her age as she was marrying a much younger man! You'll also probably get both fathers names and occupations too which would help you find Mary with her family in an earlier census.

Excellent, thanks.
I've just discovered FreeBMD (from your replies) - did I say I am VERY new to this.
It looks like the links from that site to GRO is the path to ordering that certificate.
I'll go that way - but (must earn a crust) I need to be away for a few days - please don't think I lost interest but I'll be travelling.
Thanks again - I would NEVER have twigged the 5-year rule.

Hi frodob
Yes - 11 is MUCH more likely than 21!
I think that I've got 6 of their names - but I don't have Arthur's Wife's name.
This should just about take you to the 3rd post...
Best
