Hi All,
Revisited Old Dalbeth today and its really nice to see the clear up coming along, still lots to go but its looking better everytime. I took the advantage of the nice day to jump over the wall and have photographed all the surviving stones (100 plus photographs). I intend to list the names and year of death on the ones I can make out over the space of next week so anyone wishing to know if their relations stone has survived give me thier names and if there I will send the photo to you.

What a transformation!
I wish a lot of the other old Churchyards would get the same treatment. In fact, I wish half the Cemeteries would too!
This seems to be the weather for jumping/climbing walls as there's a few threads on the go with that as an option. Makes it all much more worthwhile - especially if you find someone you've been hunting for. ;D

Yeah it would be Anne, And although I didnt find my relations if I manage to have found even one others relation then it will have been worth my while.

Fantastic work there Gerry!!
Superb.
You may be able to help as I got a lair number today for my Great Grandfather. I was looking for a map, see the post I made, but is there such a thing?
Thanks,
-
Hi McKeown,
Sadly there is no map for the Old Dalbeth Cemetery, Is your lair in this section or in St Peter's? A year of death would quickly tell us.
If it is Dalbeth can you PM me the lair info and I will try and work out the location from the surviving stones.
If it is St Peter's then it should be easier to locate as the graveyard is still in use and the cemetary staff will know where it is.

To gerryfarrell Hello I am seamusolong my Maternal Greatgrandfather William John Long was buried 4 March the day after he died 1941 .At a cost of 1pound 10 ,in Saint Peter's Dalbert Cemeterywhat did it mean when someone was buried in common ground?? thanks Seamus
-
Can I add a question too, please Gerry? Now that the burial records have come online, I have discovered that I have a number of family buried in St Peter's Dalbeth - a place I had never heard of before. Do you happen to know where the common ground was in the cemetery?
-
Hi Seamus & K44 ENF,
Common ground in a cemetery is ground set aside for cheaper burials either by poorer families or paid for by the parish. (Paupers graves). As there was no individual or family lairs bodies were buried in mixed graves and unmarked.
St Peter's has a few area's which were common graves, It may be possible that the cemetery staff could locate which area your relations are buried by the date of death but sadly to identify the exact lair maybe virtually impossible.

To gerryfarrell, Thank you very much , I kinda had an idea it was something like that .I guess it was a common story they left Ireland to find a better life in Glasgow , But the better life still evaded them there , But their Children that left to set sail to distant Lands and ,their Children ,the Greatgrandchildren fared pretty well in testament to their Grandparents and Greatparents what they did not have in wealth they gave us a rich sprite . would you have any information on contacting the St Peter's Dalbert Staff all the best Seamus
-
Thanks very much for the information, Gerry. I took a run out to see the place a week past Sunday and to take a few photographs, but I certainly will try to speak to staff in case there is more to be discovered.

Seamus, K44,
The cemetery is still operated by the Catholic Church at Clyde Street in Glasgow. Although I'm not sure if they will keep a lair plan there, I would imagine they could give you the contact number for the Cemetery's head groundsman.

If a visit Mon-Fri can be made, there's a cemetery map in the wee office.
I don't think they have copies of any sort to give out, but having a look at it would certainly help to find where the sections are (and there's not a shortage of those!!) ;)

Has anyone found any Docherty's in Old Dalbeth Cemetery? Been having a hard time trying to locate my gr gr grandparents, Martha and Michael Docherty. I believe they did die sometime between 1851 and 1861. They were Irish Scots from the area, but I believe they were very poor, as most of the Irish immigrants were. I have had no luck at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gerry
Thank you so much for finding the grave of my g grandparents James and Maryann McElhinney. I knew they were buried in Old Dalbeth but had been told by Archdiocese that it was not possible to visit the cemetary because of the poor state of the place. Great to see the improvement.

Just catching up with this thread. Just a post to say thanks to Gerry for his hard work on this.
I now have located many of my Irish forefathers who left Ireland and are buried in the common ground in Dalbeth. This graveyard really has untold stories awaiting to be uncovered.
