Title: SCOTT - help needed please.
Post by: Tiffaney on Sunday 02 November 08 22:37 GMT (UK)
Hi all.  Arriving at Kirkwall recently I have discovered Scotts are amongst my ancestors on the Orkney Islands.

My Anne Scott married a Peace (John??) on Stronsay.  She may have come from another Island close by.  This would be in 1800's.

Am hoping one of our members may be connected to the Scott families so I can make some headway.

Many thanks,
Tiffaney

Have found a little more on Anne SCOTT.

to recap:

Anne SCOTT from Dishes, Stronsay, Orkney, married John PEACE of Stronsay Orkney.

Their children were:
David Peace chr. unknown
John Peace chr. 30 Oct 1814
Barbara Peace chr. 18 May 1817
Elspet Peace chr 30 June 1820
William Peace chr 31 Aug 1823
Margaret Peace chr. 3 Sep 1826.

Would anyone know who Anne Scott's parents were please & anymore about her children.

Thankyou
Tiffaney

Hi again

You might have this but this looks like the family in 1841

Disher, Stronsay - Parish 31 ED 1 Page 1

John Peace, 70, farmer
Ann, 45
David, 25
John, 20
Barbra,15
Betsy,14
Margaret, 10

all b. Orkney

Note that the 1841 grouped people over 15 into 5 year age groups, rounding down to the neares 5 or 0 - 15 = 15-19; 20=20-24, etc.

Have you managed to find her in later censuses? I've had a look because she should be there 1851-1871 but nothing obvious.

Feel very fortunate for all your lookups Gadget.  Would be thrilled with anything else you may come up with.

No..... I haven't got the 1841.  That certainly appears to be the family....great.

Have some research I did in Kirkwall in Christchurch  NZ (posted) ,so will have to check on what I found.  Was researching mainly Shearers and Peace & then started on Scott when I found the connection...hadn't found much on them..time ran out.

Thank you very much for your e-mail..splendid....
Just going to look in at your web site....sounds as tho' we both love the stories about our ancestors lives...

Many thanks for all you're doing...having an exciting day thanks to you.

regards,
Tiff

Got a little more for you. Not Ann's baptism but two of her siblings:

Bpts to children of William Scott and Barbara Craigie Parish of Sanday (Lady, Cross and Burness)

9 July 1779 Margaret
24 Feb 1782 John

I'm sure I found an Ann Peace with that birth place earlier on one of the censuses.

A possible:

Bpt: 15 March 1752, Sanday - Barbara Criagie d/o William Craigie and Jannet Tulloch

Others:

6 April 1754, St Andrews (Orkney) d/o William Craigie and Jean Meason

30 October 1754, Deerness d/o Jerome Craigie or Cray and Barbara Thomson

Two possibles for William Scott ~

Both Sanday

6 May 1759 s/o Thomas Scott and Jean Scott

27 Jult 1760 s/o James Scott and Margaret Skea

Please note that these (including Barbara Craigie) are only possibles - the most likely given their place of baptism.

Thank you for your interesting posting Sybil.  At this stage I can't see a connection but someone else may know of one.

My Ann SCOTT married 16 April 1812 on Stronsay John PEACE
Ann's parents were William SCOTT & Barbara MS CRAIGIE.
Some of Ann's siblings were: Jannet b: 3 Nov 1777; Margaret b: July 1779; John b: 15 Feb 1782. All born Sanday.

Will be on the lookout for you too Sybil & if anyone can add to anything for both Sybil & myself that will be wonderful.

As you see on my SCOTT postings...I have had masses of help already & have gone quite a way back, so will indeed be extremely fortunate if I find more.

Glad you posted yours Sybil,
regards,
Tiffaney.
Happy New Year to you & yours. :)

Hi there Tiffaney, if you are heading out to Sanday some time please note that there is a booklet with  the Sanday Memorial Inscriptions from all 3 cemeteries: Burness, Cross and Lady. It might save you some footwork. I believe it is printed on the island.

It,s a great island with beautiful beaches, especially the one at the north end of Burness, but if it,s a rough day it gets a bit tiring trying to find names you are looking for in a cemetery. I got my booklets from the hostel and campsite on Sanday ( Ayres Rock) they have a website, the lady there was kind enough to send them to me.

Hello, was just thinking if William gairn Scot is your gr  granduncle then we would be distant cousins. Awesome. i have been finding more and more cousins over the last 6 months. With all the children the Scott families have had I knew i would find people out there somewhere. William Gairn Scott and Eliza had my granfather Charles and 11-12 others children. Over the years there are fewer and fewer. Talk to you soon. Char
