Title: Find My Past _ Am I Going Mad?
Post by: Tsu on Tuesday 04 November 08 10:52 GMT (UK)
I'm trying to do an address search for the 1841 census in Find My Past.

I'm getting no matches at all for Bethnal Green Road (or any variation of).  I know that bethnal Green Road was called that in 1841 because I have an 1827 map with it on.

Can someone else with Find My Past please try to search on Bethnal Green Road Middx in 1841 and tell me what they get please?

Thanks
Tsu

FindMyPast address search regularly drives me mad!  It is really quite bizarre.  Often if you put in a whole word for the street name it gives no results, but put in the first few letters and an asterisk as a wild card search and you get the whole word you were looking for in the first place ::)

A search on Beth* with residential place Bethnal Green and county Middlesex yields:

Bethnal Green
Bethnal Green North Side
Bethnal Green North Side Guardian Society

but not Bethnal Green Road

Does that at least get you close enough to navigate to where you want to be?

I'm looking for whoever was in charge of the coffee house at 315 Bethnal Green Road.  In 1861 it was John Hosford, but I can't find him in the 1841 census.  He was born in Ireland in 1816, but was married in London in 1840 (to Jane Innocent) so would certainly have been living here in 1841.

I don't have access to the 1851, so haven't found him then, either.

He passed the coffee shop to his son in law Edwin Stanley when he died in 1874.  Edwin was my great great grandfather.

We want to know how he went from Silk Weaver to Coffee House Keeper and when.

It will only show up as that on findmypast if that address was actually used in the census

Hm.  I can't imagine what they would have called it.  There are nearly five hundred households on Bethnal Green Road...

Hello again,

It looks like 9 Spital Street, and the other family were

John Kingston(Kingdom?)  38, Silk Weaver, born Ireland
Ephebia?                           29    "                  Bethnal Green
Hannah                             11                              "
Jane                                  5 months                   "

I've had a quick look at the 1841, but can't immediately find John Hosford, but there is a William Hosford living in Bethnal Green with his family, who was also a silk weaver.
Do you want those details?

I looked in Pigots 1839 which is by name not address.  There were no Hosfords, Horsford or anything similar.  Sorry

I think you may have something there Jen.  Although Hobsons Place is in MENT, it's still in Whitechapel.  I think this may be him.

I wonder where Jane Innocent was?  Her family were living in Little York Street in Bethnal Green, but there's no sign of her.

I love this site, you're all so helpful...  :)

I thijnk Jane Horsford in the 1841 census is Jane Innocent. I just realised they got married in July 1840...

This must be the right family!

Thanks again for all your help.

That's why I put her in bold  ;D

This family certainly looks promising.

Have you got John's marriage certificate?

It would have been better if he was a silk weaver  :(
