I have unsuccessfully been trying to trace a birth certificate or census record for a Margaret McLeod born in Loch Broom area in c1849. I have her in the 1901 census for Kincardine. Her father was a John McLeod a tailor and her mother a Jessie McKenzie. I can find no record of them in Loch Broom area. In the 1901 census her aunt Colina McKenzie, single aged 73 was staying with her. Her birthplace is given as Loch Broom but so far I have only found one Colina and the age is wrong. Margaret married in Croick Church a Donald McPherson when she was 19 years old.

Hi :)
If it helps, there is a baptism on the IGI (extracted) showing for a Colina McKenzie, Lochbroom on 7 February 1827. Father Charles. There is also one for 23 Aug 1829 but with father Kenneth.
However, there is a death in Stirling 6 October 1913 of a Colina McKenzie, single, aged 85. Her parents are given as Charles McKenzie (weaver) and Bella m.s. McKenzie. The informant was a Bella Mcrae, niece.

I see that on their marriage cert. in 1868, Donald and Margaret were married 'according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland' and Margaret was 19. Her parents were not stated as deceased on the cert.
If Margaret's family were of the Free Church when she was born, her baptism wouldn't appear in the records of the established Church of Scotland. The Old Parish/Parochial Records (OPRs) that are available on SP, IGI, etc. are only those of the Church of Scotland.

They appear to have only moved to Kincardine just before the 1861 census:

Janet, 40, tailor's wife
Maggie, 12,

Bell, 8

all b. Lochbroom
Williamina's birth should be registered as this was after Jan 1855

On 27 March 1859, when Williamina was born, the family were living at Morefield which is a small crofting area just to the West North West of Ullapool and on the shores of Loch Broom.

I think that Janet/Jessie was b. Keanachulish which is north of Ardmair. It's the nearest that i can come to the place written on the 1851 census (looks like Kinchulian).
I've known the area for over 30 years and lived there/holidayed there on and off for about 20 and it's the only place that I can think of that bears any resmblance to the writing.

John MacLeod, tailor, married to Janet Mackenzie, died 10 July 1891, Kincardine, R & C. His parents were William MacLoed, corfter and Margaret, m.s. Maclean. Both deceased.
I've not yet found the death of Janet/Jessie.

Hi Gadget
Thank you very much, that is absolutely great. I can now go and fit in another piece of the MacPherson side of the family. Now I am sifting through papers looking for an article in a newspaper re the death of Able Seaman David McKandie ( I dont think it should have the K) I had it in front of me the other day and now I have searched and searched, I have filed it somewhere it shouldnt be. :-[ but seriously that information is great and thanks once more.

Hi Gadget
just to say that you were spot on with the information you gave me. I have only now got round to adding that particular items to the family tree and it all tied in with info got within the past month of the MacLeod/MacPherson connection that I had only a name and year of birth and now have another branch of the McPhersons and info on the MacLeod connection. Thanks again.

I'm glad about that :)
I've been familiar with the area for about 30 years and lived there for about 10. It's very much M(a)cLeod country although it's traditionally MacKenzie land :)

hi, sorry was having an attack of computer gremlins when I messaged you yesterday. What I was trying to say was, if you go to the family search site and type in the parents names in the advanced search, those children come up. I know the date is a bit out for your Margaret, but it does all look like the same family. Williamina's birthday looks accurate.
Hope it's the one your looking for.
Maggie :)

mrsaird, I realize many years have passed since your original post. Did you find your relatives?
Is this some of them?
https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~coigach/genealogy/sou-east.htm#41morefield-25[/url]
Charles MacKenzie 55 Crofter
Isabell do. 45
William do. 25
Janet do. 20
Colina do. 15
The site indicates: Isabell is Widowed in 1851 at Kenachrine 51-79.
Two children of Charles and Isabell; Andrewina and William, emigrate to Tasmania in 1853, see McNab 525, that listing has them resident at Morefield. The passage cost A$4,500 in today's dollars.
McKENZIE, William 36 M Hired 6 February as a Labourer by Mr. R.Thompson of Mount Esk for a wage of #50 per 12 months, with keep
Mary 26 M Hired 6 February
Isabella Inf. S Hired 6 February
Andrewina (sister) 26 S Hired 6 February as a General Servant by W.H. Bowden of O'Briens Bridge at a wage of #20 for three months with keep.
Further notes indicate:
The Parish Register says William McKenzie married Mary Matheson 6 January, 1853.
Have not yet seen William in the 1851 census, but in 1841 he was with his parents and two sisters (not Andrewina) at Morefield 41-25
Mary Matheson was with her Widowed mother in the 1851 census at Ullapool 51-109. Her parents were Duncan Matheson, sometime carter of fish from Gruinard and Ullapool to Conon Bridge and latterly InnKeeper, an occupation continued by his Widow Flora, maideb surname Tolmie.
Andrewina was in the 1851 census with her Widowed mother and two sisters near to Morefield at Kenachrine 51-79.
William signed a Promissory Note before leaving Scotland, see hire.htm#9
Rod Edmond notes that William and Andrewina were siblings of Alexander MacKenzie, who had been first husband of Margaret MacLeod in the next family, McNab 526.
I am interested to know whether you found John McLeod's parents William McLeod and Margaret McLean. Did you find their birth location? I haven't.
