In 1851 census there is a married labourer George Coutts age 26 born Birse boarding at Percie in Aboyne. Also there is Alexander Coutts age 34, a wood merchant and his son John age 8. All born in Birse. Alex enum as un-married, but at Traciebrae in Birse there is Jane Coutts wife of absent Alex Coutts (farmer 20ac). She is 28 and has daughters Mary 3 & Ann 2 - IGI has their mother as Jane Dinnie.
In 1881 there is George Coutts age 56, ag lab b. Birse with wife Elizabeth 45 b Birse at Pitslugertie cottage in Birse.
Children born to Joseph Coutts in Birse in IGI (with no mother named):
James 1799, Jean 1801, John 1803, Joseph 1805, Mary 1807, Thomas 1809, Elspet 1813. Since there are evenly spaced births with no name repetitions, I would guess that these are all to your Joseph.
IF Joseph followed the standard naming convention, his parents would be James & Mary, and Margaret Clark's parents would be John & Jean.

Thank you for this information, I am a bit lost on how you can guess/work out whom the parents were, I will look at this names and see if they are listed. Also amazed you have found more siblings. The Birse Folks website does not have this info.
Thank You

I had a look at the Birse OPR while at the ANEFHS, found the following:
Joseph Couts & Margaret Clark were "both in this parish" at the time of their marriage.
Baptisms:
Joseph Coutts at the Connachy had James bp 1 Sep 1799, wit William & James Ross
" " at Auchnafoy had Jean bp 15 Aug 1801, wit James Ross & Andrew Coutts
" " at Minly had John bp 10 Jul 1803, wit Andrew Coutts & James Harper
" " at Minly had Joseph bp 9 Jun 1805, wit congregation
" " at Minly had Mary bp 15 Jun 1807, wit Andrew Coutts & James Ross
Baptism of Thomas 23 Apr 1809 not found, presumably out of order on the film.
" " at Ennachy had Elspet bp 29 Apr 1813, wit Alex Duncan & Elspet Grant in Ennachy
Joseph Coutts & wf Margaret Clark at Ennachy had Margaret bp 10 Aug 1815, wit James Ross in Aucnafoy & James Ross in Ennachy
Baptism of Isabel 28 Apr 1818, presumably out of order on the film.
Joseph Coutts & wf Margaret Clark at Ennachy had Christian bp 6 Aug 1820, wit congregation.
Joseph Coutts & wf Margaret Clark at subtenants at Ennachy had twins George Smith Couts & Charles Mitchel Couts, wit John Burness & Charles Mitchell

Also noticed: 23 May 1805 Andrew Coutts in Minly had Ann, wit James Harper & Joseph Coutts.

Maybe Andrew C & Joseph C were brothers? Or father & son? There is an Andrew Couts bp to Thomas Couts 6th Jun 1761, and Andrew born to Andrew 9th Oct 1791.

The traditional naming pattern is: 1st son after the father's father, 2nd after the mother's father; 1st daur after the mother's mother, 2nd after father's mother.

:)So do you think the parents of joseph are james and mary?
I did a igi check and found nothing, Thanks for the records, I certainly did not expect any one to be near the family records. We are outside London so no chance of getting there.
Is Andrew brother to joseph? I have not been able to find a birth for Joseph in 1780/1.
Is connachy a village?
I have been trying for a very long time to fill in more of my dads side, we also have Irvine as a family name from drum, thats just as much fun.
All your help is very much appreciated.

I have searched for years trying to link the various Coutts families in Birse, especially the family of Thomas Coutts residing at Wester Clune.

I have added my thoughts on this family to my website Birse Folk http://birsefolk.id.au/Origins%20of%20Thomas%20Coutts%20Wester%20Clune.htm

I cannot find parish register entries to confirm these assumptions on my part.

The reason I have added them to the website is to invite debate from other researchers who have also been researching these family names.  As stated by Stuart P in his post, I do think that George and Andrew Coutts were brothers.
