Title: ROWE - Wilcove
Post by: TAMOWEN4 on Tuesday 02 December 08 16:50 GMT (UK)
Hi

one of my wife's great great grandfathers was born in Wilcove Cornwall in 1844 (later documents have his occupation as Printer) he married Elizabeth Ann Hall in Plymouth 1866. Sometime after the mid 1870's he moved with his wife and family to Renfrewshire Scotland.

As far as we know George Rowe's father was William Rowe and his mother Jane Rowe (nee Broad??)

Any information on William and or Jane would be welcome

thanks in anticipation

Tommy

what have you actually got? Have you found George on censuses? if so, which? Have you got his birth cert? (presumably not as you are not totally sure of parents)

No point looking for info on William and Jane until you are sure they are his parents! ?

After his marriage George is at RG10 2084 59 24 in 1871
newton Abbot Devon, with wife Elizabeth and 2 small children bn Plymouth. Geoge bn Wilcove

There is no obvious candidate for him in 1861 giving birthplace as Wilcove. Have you got his marriage cert to confirm his dad's name?

If he is the son of William and Jane, then more about them can be found on the 1861 census

RG9 1449 16 27
Luke Street Buildings, Stoke Dameral Devonport

William 45 bn Cornwall Calstock
Jane 41 bn Cornwall St Germans
George 17 printer bn Cornwall Antony
John M 14 bn C'wall Antony
Fanny 12 bn Devonport
Henrydiren? ? 7 bn D'port
Frederick 1 bn D'port

so they moved Cornwall to Devon about 13 years earlier.

Hi lizdb

thank you for the info.

1881 Census on Scotlands People, George Rowe (Printer born England). George had moved to Greenock with his wife and family, where they had another child born. When Georges wife Elizabeth Ann Hall died, he remarried and he and his second wife had a child.

Fanny Rowe, George's daughter married a Greenock man, Edward McCafferty and so began a branch of my wifes tree. (McCafferty my wife's maiden name)

I put a post on the Devon look ups and along with information from a relative received this.

1871 Census living at Wolborough Newton Abbot
George Rowe (Printer) b Wilcove Cornwall
Elizabeth A    b Stonehouse Devon
2 children listed as b Plymouth
Fanny Rowe b Newton Abbot

from a relative, who had looked at marraige certificate, gave George Rowe's parents as William Rowe and Jane Rowe (nee Broad) cannot be sure Broad, very difficult to make out writing,

so do you agree that his parents are born Cornwall Circa 1820?

From your post George is listed as b Cornwall Antony not Wilcove, is that a different Parish, village?

Once again thanks I am sure I am on the right track

Tommy :)

Hi Tommy,

Wilcove is an area of the Rame Peninsula. It comes under Torpoint Antony I believe and is just across the river from Devonport. Being so close to the border a lot of records are found in Devon

http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/gazplace?CCC=CON,GR=SX430560,PLACE=WILCOVE

1851 census

HO107/1882 Folio 243 Page 13
74 Princess Street
Morrice Stoke Damerel

ROWE William Head 34 Mar b Calstock Lab
ROWE Jane Wife 29 Mar b St Germans
ROWE Emma Dau 9 b Antony
ROWE George Son 7 b Antony
ROWE John Son 4 b Antony
ROWE Fanny Dau 2 b Devonport
ROWE Mary Ellen Dau 4 days b Devonport

The Registration District for this area is St Germans. This looks like George's Birth which would confirm his mothers name

ROWE George Dec 1/4 1843 St Germans 9 98

If she is Jane Broad the marriage appears to have been across the river in  Devon

William ROWE = Jane BROAD Sep 1841 East Stonehouse 9 338

Cheers Kris  :D

Hazel, thank you for your message. As far as I can be certain the relations posted on rootschat are my wifes relations. I believe other members of her extended family have also researched the Rowe connection and found it to be accurate.
Edward McCafferty (born in Scotland) 1864 married Fanny G Rowe (born 1873 Newton Abbot England) in Greenock Renfrewshire Scotland 30th Dec 1891. Fanny died in Greenock 8th April 1912. it would seem Fanny Rowe had four siblings, all males. 3 born in Plymouth and a younger sibling born in Greenock. PM me if I can be of further help
kind regards
Tommy

okay so can we contact and add each other to our tree's.... i am on ancestry under hazelgreen2519 and i have also had my dna done and am waiting to receive results on my father.... mine shows that i am not related to an individual that is linked into fanny g rowe who i thought had married a edward
mccafferty and i am not sure if that is right because it links into a tree that dna says i am not related to. how certain are you on that connection and do you by any chance have the marriage of george and elizabeth so i can prove their parents.... i think we should share more info if you are willing

Hello from Canada! :-)

Edward McCafferty and Fanny Rowe are my maternal 2nd Great Grandparents. I descend through their daughter Catherine who married Hugh Bonnar.

I have been trying to connect with family and fill in some added branches on my Mum's tree before I do up a family book for her.

I would love to chat and share information. Please let me know if you're interested. Thank you!

Hi from Lanarkshire Scotland. The Rowe connection is my wife's family tree. I will check her family tree and get back to you as soon as I can.

Hi, here is some of the information from my wifes family tree re the McCafferty/Rowe branches.

Fanny Rowe born Newton Abbot. Devon. England 1870. (Parents George Rowe and Elizabeth Ann Hall). Died Greenock. Renfrewshire. Scotland 8th April 1912 (possibly as a result of child birth?)

I don't know when the family Rowe moved to Scotland.

Fanny Rowe married Edward McCafferty in Greenock. Renfrewshire. Scotland in February 1867.

Edward and Fanny had several children all born in Greenock.
Alfred McCafferty. Catherine McCafferty born c1895? Edward Mcafferty 1897-1964 (this Edward was my wifes grandfather), Patrick McCafferty born c1899? and Fanny McCafferty born 1912. died c1989?

Note Edward McCafferty now a widower remarried in 1915 in St. Lawrence RC Church. Greenock.

Hopefully this ties up with your information.

Hi!
I apologise for the delay in my replying, my laptop battery decided to quit, so I haven't any access to my family information.
From what I can see, everything meshes as to it being the same family.
Thank you very much for sharing.
Did your wife ever hear of Edward McCafferty (m. Fanny Rowe) going to a step dance competition in the USA (New York presumably) and having a nickname of "Wee Yankee" McCafferty?
