Title: Alice Evans (nee Taylor)
Post by: MaccaAddison on Sunday 28 December 08 20:33 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am looking back into my family history and have my great grandfather George Evans married to Alice (nee Taylor).

Alice was born in Wokingham in about 1871 but moved to Reading from the 1881 census I think, although still living with her family.

I have her with George Evans in Reading on the 1901 census and 2 children - Sydney and Winifred. But I know George had 2 more - Ernest (my granddad) and Constance.

Now I know he was living with a Kate later on (family info) but not sure married, but cannot seem to find any record of Alice - so not sure what happened to her or who this Kate was.

George Evans was born in Toddington, Bedfordshire in about 1871.

Any info would be great.

Thanks

Mark

Connie b ~1909 and Ernest ~1910.

That's a big gap between Winnie (1897) and the next...

Whom are the protagonists with in 1891?

Thanks for your response

Just trying to confim who the mother was - was it Alice and where did she go, and who was Kate and did she marry George.

What do you mean about protagonists - am I missing something and being stupid lol

Cheers

If you need to know who the mother is then you buy a certificate.
anything else is supposition.

I had a look on the Berkshire Burial Index to see if Alice had died, and perhaps George had remarried before Constance and Ernest came along.

I found this burial:

Wantage St Peter & Paul
25 Aug 1904 Alice Evans age 44.

Her abode/address is given as Oxford, Radcliffe Infirmary.

I don't know if this could be your Alice - right age, but it's not Reading! (about 20 miles away), but it's possible, and would explain the gap between the childrens' births.

You should perhaps look through the indexes for a remarriage for George to a Kate 1904-9.

Of course, Pauline is right - if you want to be sure who Ernest's mother was, you really need the certificate.

There is a marriage in Basingstoke Hampshire/Berkshire in 1905 of a George Evans and one of the brides on the page is a Kate Batten

Vol 2c Page 451

As has been said you need a birth cert for one of the children

Of course there may not be any Kate; perhaps Alice did not use her 'official' name on a day-to-day basis.

I understand that Kate and George lived in Hemdean Road, Caversham, Reading - their neighbours (few doors down) were the Browns. Kate was the sister.

Not sure whether that helps track this Kate down.

Alice is listed on Ernest Evans birth certificate (b 10/08/1909) as his mother.

A family member beleives Alice died of Cancer - not sure how true that is.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks

Could this one be yours Mark?

From FreeMBD:

George Evans/ Kate E Haskell marriage Jul/Sep 1918 Reading

The only Alice Evans death I can see in Reading is after that though, in 1922. There is an Alice J Evans death in Basingstoke district, in April/Jun 1918, aged 49.

Do you know exactly where Alice was born? Some of Basingstoke registration district is now Wokingham. Maybe she was with relatives when she died.

Looks like you need more certificates to solve this one.

Hi Mark,

If Ernest's birth certificate says Alice is his mother - then Alice is his mother!   ::)

FreeBMD has the following death registration:

June Quarter 1916 Reading   Alice Evens age 45
Ref: 2c 415

Of course, you would have to send for the certificate to find out for sure that she's the right one, but the age at death matches the 1871 birth year you mentioned.

As for the elusive Kate - there's a marriage:

Sep Quarter 1918 Reading   George Evans & Kate E Haskell
Ref: 2c 921

Again, you'd have to send for the certificate to see if this is your George. I don't know where the surname Brown would come into it - unless Kate herself was a widow when she married George Evans, and her maiden name was Brown?

Looks like you found the right death registration Jill!

Kate Haskell aged 15 is with her parents Joseph and Martha at 6 River Road Reading in 1901
RG13/1149/114/14.

I'll see if I can find a Haskell/Brown marriage - maybe Kate's sister married a Brown.

Yes!

Lilian Haskell (Kate's sister) married Albert V Brown Apr/Jun 1917 Reading.

Good one, Anne!

Mark, if you haven't already got them, these look like George & Alice's births:

March Q 1871 Wokingham   Alice Taylor
Ref: 2c 406

There are 2 possibles for George Evans. Toddington comes under the Woburn Reg District in Bedfordshire.

1. June Q 1870 Woburn   George Evans
Ref: 3b 407

2. March Q 1872  Woburn  George Evans
Ref: 3b 411

Oh b---er! I've just checked the deaths in Woburn to see if the first George died soon after birth, with the possibility that the second George was born to the same family - but it appears that they both died as babies! The first in 1871 age 1, the second in 1872 age 0.

It's possible that George Evans wasn't entirely honest about his age when filling out censuses, so I'll take a look and see if there are any other George Evanses born in the area around 1870-2!!  ::)

Yep!

Another George Evans birth:

March Q 1873 Woburn Ref: 3b 425

and no sign that this one died in infancy.

Just to round it off (I hope) before teatime - here's the marriage:

Dec Q 1892 Reading  George Evans & Alice Taylor
Ref: 2c 821

Lots of certificates for you to send for, Mark - I envy you!

Thanks Jill, Anne and Berkslass

I think you have solved both the Kate and Alice mystery - Kate did have a sister and after Kate was with George Evans they all lived in Hemdean Road, Caversham, Reading. I am sure her name was Lillian.

Abit concerned reference George Evans and birth year now - we have his marriage cert and lists his father as William and the 1901 census has him in Reading and married to Alice and born in Toddington so we have right one - just get his birth year exact.

Has Berkslass transposed the birth dates for Ernest and Constance, as I always have had Ernest (my grandad) birthday as 10/08/ 1909.

Thanks for all you help, perhaps Berkslass could confirm.  Why do you think George or William left Toddington - Reading is not exactly down the road.

Cheers

Mark

Hi Mark,

Sorry, I did transpose the dates.  Constance was born in 1908 and Ernest in 1909.

To the people involved in this line of communication:

I am interested in Albert V. Brown from Reading, b.c 1889.

I can share some information on this Brown family, descending from John Brown of York Street, Bermondsey, a Customs House Officer.

Hi K Rees

Lillian Haskell (my great grandmother kate's sister) married Albert V Brown in 1917.

I think that some of my family have some connection to the Browns and Wigmores.

Any information would be greatly received.

Best regards

Mark
