Hello 'GerryFarrell'
I have just literally stumbled on your various posts re Dalbeth Cemetery. I spent last Friday and Saturday in the Mitchell Library pouring over the Burial Record Microfilm for St Peters And Dalbeth with limited success and then visiting the cemetery, only to find that there was no entry through the wall to Old Dalbeth and St Peters Cemetery only open on weekdays. Despair!
Then I found yourself and others on RootsChat.com.
I wonder if you could firstly clarify exactly how many cemeteries are actually there? I noticed The Good Shepherd stands between Old Dalbeth and St Peters and Dalbeth Cemeteries. Are they all listed somewhere?
Also I note that you have managed to transcribe the MI's and photograph the gravestones, and wonder whether you might share some of this information if I were to send you a PM?
-
Hi frankin,
I have also despaired on several occations when looking through the microfilms of the burial records at The Mitchel as they are very hard to read.
On the subject of the Cemetery your right it is known under several names, The land which it is sited was known as Dalbeth estate and owned by the Hopkirk family until 1851 when it was sold to the Community of The Good Shepard who built Dalbeth Convant. The oldest and small part of the cemetery which is walled off was / is known as Old Dalbeth and the newer and much larger part is known as St Peter's. This causes quite a bit of confusion but they are all within the one area off London road.
Check out my previous link to see a pic -
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,324578.0.html
thankfully its looking better as the work continues.
The cemetery is still owned and run by the Catholic Church and although only stafed Mon - Fri it is open for access all weekend just drive in at the gate where you saw the sign for The Good Shepard and this will take you to a smll car park. If you look to the right when facing the main wall Old dalbeth is behind the wall at present there is no opening or gate in the wall for public access as its still under restoration however being a lanarkshire laddie I jumped the wall to get the photos of the remaining gravestones.
Feel free to message and ask for any stones which remain, Although it is only the Old Dalbeth section I have and not St Peters.
Gerry
-
Hi Gerry,
Thank you for your reply, I think I have a better idea now about the cemetery names and locations. I think I will visit again soon to have another closer look.
Your other link with the pictures inside Old Dalbeth are an eyeopener!! What a state it must have been allowed to get into.
I,ve taken the opportunity to send you a PM with a short list of MI's I would like to look at more closely if that it is OK with yourself.
Thank you very much once again.
-
Hi Gerry,
On your list of cemetery names I noticed numbers 31 and 32 were Donnelly. Would you have any more information ie. first names.
regards colcal
-
Hi Frankin,
Mi's Pm'd as equested. If any stones are relevant to your search them PM me your email and I will snd them to you.
Gerry
-
Colcal,
MI's as requested. If relevant PM me your email and I'll send the photographs.

A question on this subject which I hope will not offend. Was this a predominantly Catholic cemetery? I am reseaching my family in this general area but they were for the most part so far as I know of the Protestant faith. Would appreciate clarification. Thank you.
-
Hi Jewel,
Both Old Dalbeth and St Peter's cemeties are owned and operated by the catholic church so I would reckon that the majotity of burials would be of the catholic faith however I wouldn't rule out that all are as I'm sure they wouldn't turn anyone away and there is no way of knowing what religion anyone is from their headstone unless a clergyman etc.
There is a large amount of graves of clergymen and nuns within these cemeteries but also a large area of unmarked graves belonging to people who were taken in at the former convant that passed away.
The microfishe of burial registers is held in the Mitchel library which would be the only way of confirming or dismissing.
Gerry
-
Gerry,
Thanks for that info. I am hoping to be able to make another trip to Scotland before old Father Time catches up to me so will leave it at that for the present. Really great work being done by Rootchat members in this regard. I am sure it is much appreciated by all who use this forum.

I'm having a job sending you a PM.
Can you please PM me on Conway13 please
Cheers

Hi Richard
Welcome to RootsChat :)
You need to have made at least 3 posts on the main forum before you can use the PM service to email other RCs. So just make a couple more and you will be able to access this service. Gerry will get notification of your post here and I'm sure will be in touch.
Monica
-
Monica - Thanks for that
I am interested in Gerry's information on Dalbeth as my Great, great, great grandparents are buried there, Lawrence and Bridget Conway.
I was in the Mitchell Library in December and managed to find the lair number etc. and I am hoping that Gerrys "Conway 22" are them.
I'm in Aberdeen these days (ex-Motherwell) and it's no always easy to get down the road.
Cheers
Richard
-
Hi Richard
Gerry's done such a phenomenal job on Old Dalbeth MIs, huge credit to him.
He doesn't look to have been on line since 24 May, the day before your post, which is why he hasn't responded so far. He will I am sure as soon as he logs back on :)
All my crew are there (Old and New cemeteries), sadly no records found so far for them at Old Dalbeth :'(
Monica
-
Hi Conway,
Sorry for taking so long in getting back to you on this, My heads been stuck in text books of a different kind for the last 6 weeks to get my final exams past. All done now and I can get back to this. I'll have a look at the Conway grave you mentioned once I get home and send you the details asap.
Gerry
-
Hi Richard,
Sadly Conway 22 is the grave of a priest as follows -
Rev Daniel Conway, 12 July 1884. Aged 56
Gerry
-
Gerry - Thanks for your help anyway.
I checked up on Fr. Daniel Conway (worth a try !) but no relation.
I now suspect the lair that I am after is in the newer part of Dalbeth/St. Peters.
I've got a lair/section number but I am just waiting for a reply from the office.
Cheers
Richard
-
David,
You'd be better contacting the Scottish Catholic Archives in Edinburgh as the Lair Registers are with them at the moment -

Gerry - Thanks for that !
I'll contact them today.
I heard early last year that all the Catholic cemetery records were away to be digitised and made available (some how ?). Maybe they are now in Edinburgh as part of this process. I'll post a note if I find anything out.
Thanks again
Cheers
Richard
-
Conway,
Your correct, the records are in the process of being digitised as well as a whole load of other records which touch wood should be available online as part of Scotlands People nearer the end of this year.
Gerry
-
Hi Jerry
I would be greatfull if you could let me have some more information of the campbell you have found.
i think you have done a fantasic job.
many thanks in advance julian
-
Hi there, just wondering if you had any more info on sweeney number 107 please.
Thanks Jacquie
-
Hi Gerry.
Have you heard any more news about the Catholic death records? They are taking their time to get them digitised. Still waiting for the marriage records...wonder which of them will come first.
Mary
-
Jacquie,
Send you a PM with the details
Gerry
-
Grandma,
Not at present, All I know is there is a massive amount to be done and the catholic Archivists are working with SP to try and get them as quick as they can.
Gerry
-
Hi Gerry.
Thanks for the info.
Mary
-
I read on another website that they were hoping to have them on before the end of the year...
-
I am researching John O"Donnell aged 26 who was killed in the mine disaster at Blantyre mine in 1877. You have his name on your list. There was another John O"Donnell aged 23 and one site said they were from the same address but I think that was a mistake.
As I am just starting on this research and live in Perth Western Australia any info would be appreciated.
regards
-
HI Kenmure,
I would normally PM you the copy of the stone inscription but you need to post another couple of messages first before the site allows that..........
Here is the O Donnell stone inscription -
Erected by Mary Fullen in memory of her beloved husband John O Donnell, died 5th July 1876. Aged 40 years. And her two sons James, died 12th ???? 1880. Aged 5 years. Francis, died 26th Feb 1864. Aged ? Years. The above named Mary Fullen, died 26th Sept 1877. Aged 44 years. er son John O Donnell, Died 15th July 1900. Aged 44 years.
If this does turn out to be your relations let me know and I will get a copy of the photograph to you
Gerry
-
Thanks for that gerryfarrell. They don' t seem to be the right relations.
Our John O"Donnell died in a mine accident 22nd October 1877 aged 26 and was buried on 1st Nov. at Dalbeith (their spelling) cemetery. There were 2 John O"Donnell's killed in the accident at the Blantyre mine along with over 200 men and boys. The other John was aged 23 years and not married. Our John was married to Ann Hunter who remarried and had 3 sons one of which was my grandfather.
-
Gerry this is brilliant, what a great project to do. Thankyou for doing it as I know I personally have rellies buried there.
I have not got them together yet but would you be able to see if a headstone for a Henry Quinn still stands please? He died October 11 1952 aged 81, but his wife Ellen O'brien died in 1944. Also buried with them I believe to be my gt uncle Henry McCartney, who died in Feb 1946.
Once I get my Quinn/McCartney/O'Brien line truly sorted out I'd love to see if any of my lot are here too.
Thanks again for this brilliant piece of work. We really are indebted to you.
Cheers,
Matt :)
-
Hi Reayboy.
The dates of your relations burials are too recent for them to be in he Old Dalbeth Cemetery which is the part that I'm concerned with.
Yours will be in the St Peter's part of the cemetery.
Gerry
-
Ok Gerry.
Thanks for the pointer :)
Hope all is well!
Matt.
-
Guys, I reckoned this was the best place to put these, hope thats ok. A lot of the images look pretty poor but I've tried to edit them to allow the inscriptions to be read.
If anyone has a genuine interest in any of the images, I'll gladly send on a full-res/unwatermarked version of the image here and a full pic of the stone.
I have approx half of all of the stones still standing in images and will get to the others when time allows.
best
Anthony

Hi Gerry,
Found your site, and I am interested in the Connellys 32 and 33, are you able to give christian names or any other information. Not quite sure how to PM. Hope you can help.
thanks
Lizzy
-
Hi Gerry,
Sorry, but I got my 'c' and 'd' mixed up, it is actually Donnelly and not Connelly that I am interested in.
thanks
Lizzy
-
Anthony, you photo's are really brilliant as I know only too well how poor condition some of these stones are in.
-
Lizzy, Will send you the details you requested by PM
Gerry
-
Anthony, your photos are brilliant and a credit to your skills.
Gerry do you have a layout of Old Dalbeth? How difficult is it to identify specific plots?
-
HI Camillo,
Sadly no plot plan for Old Dalbeth exists, which is a real pain and what got me started with all the photographs etc in the 1st place as I wanted to locate my GGfathers grave. We are trying to get a lair plan drawn together from the position of the remaining stones but it is a slow process.
Gerry
-
Thanks Gerry
What do you think the policy would be in relation to laying down a granite grave marker?
Would it be allowed or is it completely closed?
-
Hi Camillo,
I honestly don't know, I wouldn't think they would object if the lair could be identified however I would advise you give Sharon a call at the Archdiocese of Glasgow's office and she would be able to tell you.

Hi Gerry
I hope you can help me I have a family member that is buried a the Dalbeth Cemetry I have his register of death paper he died in the coal mines in the Mutton Pit on Tollcross road but I don't no how to find out which cemetry it is the old one or the new one his name is Patrick Scally and he died 1887
boltond297
-
Hi Boltond,
Welcome to Rootschat. Going by the date of your relation he could be in either of the cemeteries, What I can tell you is that if he is in Old Dalbeth there is no headstone which has survived bearing his name.
The Burial records are now available on Scotland's People and it will tell you his lair number and which section of the cemetery he is in.
-
Anthony! Great photos. Gerry and I are researching the same relatives in Dalbeth - and you're the one that got me started in the first place! You brought that book over to Toronto for Jackie and I, and I was hooked. I'll send you a PM.
All the best!

Hi Gerry
My husband's 2xgreat-grandparents are on one of the stones you listed. I would love to have a photo of the stone. They are John Kelly d1864 and Mary Kelly d1877. Maryann McElhinney d1890 is their daughter (my husband's great-grandaunt).
Two of my husband's other 2xgreat-grandparents are also buried there - Edward Quigley d1896 and his wife Catherine Quigley d1889. Are they by any chance the Quigleys mentioned in your list?
I would be very grateful for any help you can give me.
Sincerely
Maureen
-
Hi Maureen,
You don't know how lucky you are to have not one but two surviving headstones in Old Dalbeth.
I will send you a private message with my email address if you can mail me there I will let you have a copy of all the photo's I have of these stones and give you the lair numbers etc.

Hi Gerry,
I read your message with great interest, I am currently searching for the Cassidy side of my family who were all based in Hutchesontown or thereabouts in Glasgow 1n the later 1800's and beyond, I think many may have been buried there as I have heard many relatives both Cassidy and non-Cassidy mentioning family in that Cemetery. I'm overseas and cannot unfortunately visit often. So I wondered as per your offer for all the info you have on Cassidy's there. I would appreciate your help very much.
Mac
-
Hi Mac,
Welcome to rootschat.
The only inscription with a reference to Cassisdy is as follows -
Erected by Michael Cunnian in memory of his children, Mary, died 17th May 1864. Aged 4˝ months. Thomas, died 6th March 1865. Aged 1 day. Rosan, died 19th Jan 1863. Aged 9 months. And of Jane Conner, his wife died 18th July 1870. Aged 26 years. And of Rosan Cassidy, his wife died 5th July 1872. Aged 23 years. Michael Cunnian, died abroad.

Hi Gerry,

Gerry,
I'm excited to have found this thread! I'm hopeful that you'll be able to help w/ the following surnames:
Docherty;
Dougherty;
Sweeney;
Quin;
McGovern
McGrory
Colgan;
Googan; and
Rowan.
I found a burial record for a Barbary Sweeny, who was buried Jan. 1855 (age 60).
I can't seem to find the link to PM you.
Thanks in advance,

Hello Gerry
re Dalbeth
Do you have any references to Fallen or Fallon?
thanks
Murray
-
I'm away for a few days but will look for you when I get back home
Gerry
-
Hello,
I'm trying to trace the graves of the following and hope that you will be able to help:
Peter McCue arrived Scotland early 1930s, no death registration available.
Susannah McCue, his wife, nee Morrison
Patrick McCue died 1886
Roseann McCue nee Hughes died 1913
Joseph McCue died 1948
Philomena MCue nee Bennett died 1917.
I will be travelling to Glagow next month to look for old addresses and had hoped to find graves. I am so grateful for the work you have carried out.
-
Hi Sulla,
Welcome to Rootschat, I'm afraid the only McCue who shows on any of the surviving headstones in Old Dalbeth part of the cemetery is of a priest - Rev Constantine McCue, 9 December 1866. Aged 29
Gerry
-
Hi Murry,
The only reference to a Fallen or Fallon is as follows -
Sacred to memory of Margaret Carlin, his mother who departed this life 22nd March 1861. Aged 78 years. And of Margaret Farron, his wife who departed this life 9th December 1874. Aged 60 years. The Above James Mullin, died 24th September 1885. Aged 70 years. Margaret Maxwell, died 26th December 1853. Aged 40 years intered in Sighthill Cemetery beloved and deeply regretted.
Gerry
-
Hi folks,
Thanks for a wonderful resource so far on this cemetery. My ggg-grandmother Alice Crawford (nee Connelly/Connel) was buried in Old Dalbeth on the 1st March, 1857. Definitely a Catholic, so it looks like she's somewhere under that much and rubble :(
As the thread's been running for a few years, I wondered if there was an update on either my relative (a headstone would be wonderful) or the state of the cemetery in general?
Many thanks in advance
Mark Crawford
-
Hi Mark,
Welcome to Rootschat. I've had a look through the inscriptions of the surviving stones and there are none containing a reference to Alice.
The cemetery is much nicer now, with all the ground cleared and grass growing again and being cut. At the moment it is still closed to the public, the West wall has been removed and rebuilt as part of the forth coming Commonwealth Games Development, I'm keeping a watchful eye on it as they had to remove quite a few headstones to do this ao we want to make sure they are reinstated properly.
Gerry
-
Ah, a pity. I take it turning up with a wire brush and trowel would be frowned upon :)
Her mother Mary Clarke/Connelly I think is also buried there in St Peters, Dalbeth, in 1887. Could this be the same as your
Clark 16
earlier in the thread?
Mark
-

Just found family who were buried at St.Peter's Cemetry.I don't know if this is in the old Dalbeth cemetry or St.Peter's as she was buried in1910. I have the lair number 5637 section 15 W 8' 14/6.Can you clarify which part of the overall area I would find her.Mary Ann French, nee Wedlock, wife of Peter French. Dec.02 1910.Incidently,I found this on SP.Thank you
-
Just came across your posts re Old Dalbeth Cemetry. While researching my maternal side of family i found out that my g.g.grandfather is buried in old dalbeth. He died in 1893.He is not on the list of surviving headstones.Does this mean that he was buried on common ground.
-
Hi Naul,
No, it just means there is no headstone left in the cemetery which bears his surname.
If you contact the Scottish catholic Archives with his name and date of death they should be able to give you detais of his lair.

I note that Gerry has said he has an inscription for a Hallinan in the Old Dalbeth Cemetery, Glasgow. I believe it is Rev William Hallinan, who I think is related to me through the ancestors of my family in Co Limerick. I would like to know how I could obtain a copy of the inscription, or even better, a photograph of the gravestone (if available). peterhannan
-
Hi Peter,
The entry for Hallinan is indeed for Rev William Hallinan. If you PM me your email address I will send you the photographs I have relating to that entry.

Hello Gerry, I have some ancestors buried in St Peters Dalbeth. Are the MI`s you posted only for the old cemetery and do you know if there are any for st peters? I have the lair number- is there somewhere I could contact to see if there are stones on these graves? Their names are Archibald and Catherine McCurdy and they were buried 1897 and 1918.Thanks, Roberta
-
Hello Gerry,Wrote to you before regarding g.g.grandfather who was from Ireland and is buried in Dalbeth Cemetry.Since then have found his lair no. section and division no.I am from Ireland and intend visiting Dalbeth early next year.He has no gravestone,so just wondering is there is a map or chart showing where grave is.
-
I'm possibly in the wrong room, again. But I have just found my Great Grandmother' in St.Peter's burial book.1925.She paid 2 Pounds to be buried in a communal grave. Is it likely that there may be a memorial stone for all those buried or packed in there.SP,so far, don't have a death cert. :o
-
Sadly There is no memorial that I'm aware of for the many thousands of paupers etc buried in the common ground of St Peter's or Dalbeth Cemeteries.
-
Hi Irishseeker,
I too, have many ancestors who are buried in common ground in Dalbeth in Glasgow - quite a common thing, when people just didn't have the money for living, never mind dying!! Re SP - and your greatgrandmother's death in 1925 - are you sure there isn't a death entry available through SP? There should be! Do you want to mention name, - could have a look...
-
Hi Maggbill, thanks for your reply,my GGrandmother was Mary Henney(varients, today Heaney)nee Lennaghan 1859-1925 married Edward Henney 1847-1913.I have just gone back to SP and still can not find a Statutory Death, only the cemetery entry through CPR.Maybe fresh eyes?If you have the time, many thanks,I would appreciate your input.
-
Hi Irishseeker,
I think you may have got the wrong burial record, The Mary Heaney listed in the St Peter's Burial book shows the date of burial as Jan 7th 1925, This matches a death record on SP for a Mary Heaney aged 66 died 5th Jany 1925 however that Mary was the widow of Robert and list her parents as Patrick & Ann Hobin nee Connelly.
Gerry
-
Hi again Irishseeker,
Agree with Gerry - there is only one Mary Henney (variations) death between 1923 - 1926 ages 60 - 70, Scotland wide....the one in Glasgow with other name "Hobin" - ... so are you sure she died in Scotland? Or could it be that her name has been very badly transcribed... hhmmm.... thinking cap on....
-
Have also tried and found about 5 variations of **enney - none at all likely... one of those real mysteries...
-
okay,I did see the "Hobin" but now I will go back to the drawing board.I have been spending the last couple of days on a new site I accidently found.Irish Genealogy Toolkit site.Rather exciting so far for the Irish side of tree. But back to SP.Thanks again
-
Were Edward and Mary living in Shotts in 1911 census with sons Edward and Andrew?
-
This looks like her death
1945 HEANEY MARY other name LENAGHAN aged 90 at CALDERHEAD /LANARK
-
This is really weird.Take nothing for granted they say.Yes,that's them living in Shotts for sure in 1911.How did you find my real GGranny's death?I have searched all over and only found the aforementioned. What did I not do?and what did I miss? and where can I find a copy? For all that, thank you so much.
-
Good news, and another great find by Sancti. That's the great thing about here its the assistance given by those of us who hate to be beat.
-
oh are you so right,I too hate being beaten,I have just been back at SP with the new death date, but no,nothing zilch.I don't know how Sancti does it,possibly a direct link to you know who?
However,we are the recipients of Sancti's persistence, and for that I am grateful to him and to all of you for your help. Thanks

hi, im trying to locate the burial site of Elizabeth McCue Sinclair, buried in St Peters in 1964. Have tried the archdiocese and theyre looking into it. Ive spent the last 5 weekends walking around the grounds trying to find this site. My mum recently passed away and she wanted to be laid to rest with her gran but Im struggling to find it, anyone help? anyone by chance seen the stone? theres no other living relatives who have info :'(
-
Are you sure there is a headstone? If not your walking the cemetery may be in vain, If you find the lair number the Cemetery staff will be able to take you right to the plot.
The Mitchell Library in Glasgow has a copy of the burial books for St Peter's Cemetery.
I can't remember how late the films cover but it's worth enquiring.
Also you could try contacting the Scottish Catholic Archives in Drummond Street, Edinburgh who are also very helpful.

thanks gerry, after much hard work ive got the lair number and section, its section 14, would that be the old or new section? planning on going this weekend now i know where im heading.
-
i have no way of gettin there during the week when its staffed so ill have to find the exact lair myself, i know there may not even be a headstone. im looking for lair number 596 in section 14, i saw the map so know where section 14 is but how do you find the lair? is there any clue or is it a matter of walking the rows? thanks for advice
-
Firstly, what a great thread - and what a positive, helpful bunch of people! :)
I'm looking for information about an 18yo ancestor who is buried in Dalbeth (not St Peters) after a mining accident in Blantyre in 1896 and just need a bit of advice on where to look first for burial / plot information?
I saw some references to the Catholic Archivists and also to possible digitizing of info in Rome and of some 'hard to read' microfiche in the Mitchell Library. I live in Oxford, so would be doing this remotely. Any advice / pointers would be greatfuly received.
I was also wondering if perhaps one of his sisters was a nun here - and where best to start that line of enquiry?
-
Hi BlantyreJoe
Have you tried checking the Roman Catholic Burial registers online on the pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk His statutory death entry will also be there but will not normally include any burial info.
What was his name? Maybe people can add some info with this.
Monica :)
-
Thanks Monica! I already have his death record and the RCE from SP. It is the RCE that gives Dalbeth Cemetery as burial location. But doh! I hadn't looked in the Catholic registers (had been assuming he was Ulster Protestant :) - and was scratching my head as to why Dalbeth, thinking that maybe his sister had converted! )
His name is Joseph Robison - and that is what is on his birth record and death record - although SP have it indexed as Robinson and the Scottish Mining website has his death recorded as Robertson.
He was killed at Auchinraith No.2 Pit on 23rd March 1896, Blantyre.
I have now found his burial record, in Common Ground (10shillings and sixpence), at Dalbeth, under the name of Robertson (18, Mining accident). I am assuming that this will be the common ground shown in some of the Dalbeth photos in these threads and not in the Old Cemetery behind the walls?
I can find variations of Robison/Robinson for his parents and siblings and his sister married my GrGrGrandfather, J Pinnell.
Thanks so much for the pointer. :)

I was delighted to find some info on the Dalbeth cemetery. I have at least 3 ancestors buried at St. Peters Dalbeth cemetery, but I don't know if they are in the old part or the new. One I know is in the old part, but I didn't see her in your list.
Ann Lennon -75 yrs- 23 Oct 1901 Old Dalbeth
John Lennon -67 yrs- 16 Oct 1892 St Peter's Dalbeth
Mary Ann Miller -67yrs- 1 Dec 1924 St Peter's Dalbeth
The first 2 are husband and wife, the 3rd was their daughter. I found the actual record on ScotlandsPeople. I have been looking for photos of headstones. I live in the US so I am not able to visit myself. Can you help?
Thank you...........Jen

Hi Gerry, I have a couple of questions for you concerning the Old Dalbeth cemetery in which you have done a tremendous amount of work. I have been to the Archdiocese of Glasgow but, the poor lady that works there has so much stuff to do I don't wish to keep pestering her and ScotlandsPeople Catholic records give very little info outside of name and date. What I'm wondering is two fold; Is there anywhere where you can find a layout of the Old Dalbeth cemetery and who is buried in it and where(those whose headstones no longer exist and those who may have never had them), including if there is a common ground area? Also, is there any place where you can get more information about people buried in Old Dalbeth, like you would get on a regular death cert that would identify them more? I have several people that are buried in the Old Dalbeth whom I know are mine but, a few I'm not sure about and the Catholic listing only doesn't help and as they are in the Catholic listing they do not appear to have been required to have a regular death cert. Any help at all would be much appreciated. Kim
-
Hi Kim,
The Mitchell Library has the burial and lair books for Old Dalbeth on microfilm, they have also been digitised by the Catholic archives in Edinburgh.
The burial records only give limited information Name, age, cause of death, lair no and cost of burial. The very early books have even less information.
Sadly there is no plan for Dalbeth to show its layout, however I have a rough self made one from tracing the lair numbers of the surviving headstone that I transcribed. The common ground was the area at the front nearest the main road.
Remember that after 1855 all deaths required to be registered and a certificate issued regardless of religion.
If you need anymore detailed info or photos of any headstones send me a pm.
Gerry

Gerry, thankyou so very much for that. I am returning to the Mitchell on Monday and try that. The only thing is one of the two that I'm most interested in died in 1856 and there is no corresponding death cert for her to be had just the info in the Catholic records. Thanks again, Kim

Is there a MI for Lair 79. My relatives, Peter Connell, a still born was the first to be buried there in 1871. Followed in 1873 by another still born also called Peter Connell. The father Peter Connell is buried in 1887.
Then my Grans brother William Gilmour is buried there in 1892 only a few months old. Then my Gran's grandmother, Helen Connell (nee Bonar) is buried 1906. Connell was her 2nd married name.
And finally my Grans aunt Margaret Craig Gilmour is buried in 1938 there.
Many thanks and sorry if I may have asked this before. I cannot recall now, but I've just stumbled across the 1938 burial due to the free Roman Catholic registers on FindMyPast this weekend.

Hi Gerry
Could you possibly send me the details of the inscription for Black - 1.

Does anyone know if Old Dalbeth Cemetery is accessible to the public? I saw on earlier posts that it was closed for "restoration" about eight years ago, but haven't seen an update regarding reopening. We will be in Glasgow in a few days' time and I'm wondering if it's worth a visit.

I just want to thank Gerry for doing this work, and hopefully you're still replying to PMs as I've just located Ann Dougan in Dalbeth (34, I think) and will be contacting you shortly.

Would anyone know if the headstone for Andrew McFadyen (died 1860) and his wife Mary Dougherty (died 1876) is still standing in Old Dalbeth cemetery. The lair number is 283 West Side. I have an old picture of it and was wondering if it was still there to see. He was my Gt-Gt Grandfather. His son James McFadyen and his wife Mary Gillan (Gallan) are buried in the adjacent lair, 282 West Side.
Much appreciated if anyone can shed any light on this for me.

Hi, Another great thread I have just discovered thanks to all the contributors.
I am trying to find the headstone of my 3xGGF Denis Bryce buried at the Old Dalbeth Cemetery 28th Jan 1856. He died in a mining accident and I am trying to confirm who his spouse was. I have a Mary Ward but it would be good to confirm. Cheers Steve
-
Hi Steve
Welcome to RootsChat :)
His death in Shettleston in 1856 showed him aged 50.
Have you found him on the 1851 census? There are few entries, any age, for someone with that name. The closest in age that I could see in 1851 is this entry:
Dennis Bryce 50 coal miner b. Ireland
Cathrine Bryce 40 b. Ireland
James Bryce 20 coal miner b. Glasgow
John Bryce 18 coal miner b. Glasgow
Thomas Bryce 10 coal miner b. Gorbals
Dennis Bryce 5 b. Gorbals
Address B Penders Row, Baillieston, Old Monkland
His death on http://www.scottishmining.co.uk/Indexes/1856deaths.html shows
26 January 1856
Cardowan Near Glasgow
Blochairn Iron Co
Dennis Bryce
Fall of roof at his wall face

1861 has:

Thanks' Monica for your reply.
I have a copy of my 2xGGF Thomas Bryce (b1833, d1879) death record and his parents are named Denis Bryce (Farm Labourer) and Mary Ward I assume both from Ireland as Thomas was born in Ireland.
I also have a copy of Thomas's marriage record from 1861 and it confirms that both his parents Denis and Mary are deceased at that time. I took a punt on the death of Denis Bryce in 1856 although he died as a coal miner so doesn't make much sense given that Thomas records him as a Farmer!. This Denis Bryce death record doesn't record his wifes name just says married so this probably isn't him....
I also managed to find what I think is Thomas Bryce siblings and confirmed there parents are the same
Rose Ann b1840
Maurice b1841
Denis b 1841
John b 1843
Mary b 1844
It is possible that Denis and Mary Ward died in Ireland but I assume may have migrated to Scotland in the 1840's
Thanks again for you help

I posted on here last August to see if anyone could tell me in the headstone for my 3xGt Grandfather was still standing in Old Dalbeth. No one seems to have confirmed one way or the other. My assumption was that it was in Old Dalbeth (first interment in the Lairs was 1855, but last one was in 1921) but I’m wondering if it might be in St Peter’s.
The Lair number for the 1855, 1860 and 1876 burials is ‘283 West Side’ and for the 1912 and 1921 burials is the one next to it ‘282 West Side’.
Would anyone be able to say where ‘West Side’ relates to, would it be Old Dalbeth or St Peter’s?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
-
I have a photo of a relative's grave Lair 11 East Side.
I have read that a map of old Dalbeth was posted, using lair numbers to try and establish locations but the map is not there anymore.
Does anyone have a copy?
The stone was erected in 1863 by A Raab in memory of his 2 wives, Anna Puelicher and Mary Ann Annacker.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry, Gravestone pic didn't load

Hi penstemon5
I have a photo of a relative's grave Lair 11 East Side.
Could you mean Section 11 rather that Lair 11? I have to say I have never seen a map of these cemeteries defined by the lair numbers. But there are some that clearly show the Sections.
RootsChat have a number of threads on Old Dalbeth and St Peter's Cemeteries. This one here is particularly good on maps and arial shots with additional notes www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=495487.0
Another map included here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=678193.0

Lair 11, which you have confirmed, is what it is. From a RC Burial database, the lair is to be found in
Section 2 it seems.

-
Here is a copy of the lair register
-
Gerry Farrell said on one of those threads:
Regards the lair plan sadly none exists with either the Arch Diocese or the catholic archives in Edinburgh. However I have spoken with the Edinburgh Archives and I am working with them to try and see if we can plan out a lair layout using the existing stones and the lair registers, once we complete this it will be made available.
July 2009
This is what I was enquiring about. Was the plan ever produced?
If it has been posted, is that where I will find section 2?
Sorry to ask so much, I don’t know anything about the cemetery, I just found this thread, which is amazing
-
Monica, I have just Googled RC burial database for Dalbeth Cemetery and have found the map with "2" written in red.....Thank you!
Does this mean that the grave is in the new St Peter's cemetery?
-
Well done!
You could contact directly the lady that has been mentioned in the other posts, Sharon, to ask for any further help re location. See www.rcag.org.uk/index.php/the-archdiocese/administrative-branch and search for Administrative Assistant. Sharon has been very helpful to many :)
Monica
PS. It is such a nice memorial for Andrew's two wives. How old is the photo?
-
Thanks again.
It is a super photo. A lady in Germany who is distantly related to Anna Annacker spotted the name on my family tree on Ancestry and got in touch. She had also got in touch, also through Ancestry, with another distant relative of the Annacker family and they found this photo in an old box of letters and photos. She is going to look if there is a letter that was sent with it that might give further information.
Such serendipity!

Hi,
This lair is in Old Dalbeth and part of the stone remains. The photo was in my non readable folder as I couldn’t make out any of the inscription. I will revisit my notes and see if I can find the rough map I made at the time. Sadly the cemetery is in a very poor state and has become very overgrown since I done my research on it, but East side is the side to the right if looking in from the main road.

Thank you so much Gerry. I am delighted that part of the monument is, or should I say, was, still standing. I wonder if it will still be there…..

I will post the photo tomorrow when back on my PC

Thank you Gerry 😊

Hi lud
looking at section/lair numbers I would say this is in St Peter's. I'm down there tomorrow (Tuesday) so will have a look to see if I come across it

Hi
had a look around this morning, no sign of headstone, sorry. I did take a quick phone image to show the lair position, marked by 'borrowed' flowers.
There is a lair with the name Murray nearby, 12 lairs away. I will pm you with details/photo of that .. just in case it might tie in.

ps. 'borrowed' flowers replaced after image taken!

I believe ( thank you Gerry Farrell) that the bottom part of this monument still exists . Better picture on previous page. If anyone is going to Old Dalbeth and could take a pic of how it looks now I should be very very grateful.

Hi Seeria,
Inscriptions sent as requested by PM
Gerry
Hi Gerry is there any chance you would still be able to send the inscriptions you have?
Spent 2 hours trying to find a grave today, with no luck!

Hiya,
Its been a long time since you posted this, so I'm unsure you'll get this message - anyways, the 'Dougan's' I believe you mentioned are my direct ancestors. I would love to get a transcription and image.
Thanks, Christopher.
