Hi dee,
You're so right.
I thought Springvale Crematorium and Cemetery site would never reappear. It was gone 18 months I think.
Still waiting for them to include Melbourne General Cemetery on the database.

Received the following in response to my email
Thank you for your interest and concern about the inability to search the Ryerson Index. This was caused by the inability of the server to cope with the number of searches. We are as the saying goes a victim of our own success. However the problem has now been resolved although the number of results shown is restricted to 200. Consequently it may be necessary for you to limit the number of years searched.
Cheers

Hi there,
This info may shed some light on what is happening :)
This is the infomation on the Ryerson index status button.
"STATUS of the SEARCH SYSTEM
Because our database of records is hosted on a different server to most of the web pages, you may sometimes find that the website is available, but the search function does not work.
Our search database is now under the www.ryerson.ozgenealogy.com domain, which is hosted by Bluehost. The webpages are hosted by Rootsweb.
The current status of the search system is:
17 February 2009
Our old bogey, too many users, has returned.
We are doing what we can to restore normal services, but at this stage do not have any estimate of the downtime duration. "

Thanks Maria. :D
That message has been posted since my last check, when there were only the two notices for earlier dates there.

I know the man who is one of the chief architects of the Ryerson Index - he lives here and belongs to two genealogy/local history groups that I belong to. He was talking about it the other day, and saying how it is constantly being updated, but that yes, it IS a victim of its own success. They have free hosting which of course is limited in its extent - they can't afford to pay to have more availability. It is the same problem as Rootschat sometimes has - too many users/people can't get on. I guess it is just a matter of keeping on trying.

PS He recommended the link ryersonindex.org !
-
It is only the Search Index facility on
http://www.ryersonindex.org/
that brings up the notice
This Account Has Been Suspended
Please contact the support department as soon as possible, and please have your site name ready.
All the other links are functioning ie Lookups, Browse Supplementary Index, etc.

In response to my email
Thank you for your email. Yes, we have been inundated with emails but it is good that people are concerned. Unfortunately our server has decided to suspend our site once again due to overloading his system. Whilst it is excellent that the Ryerson Index is well used, it has created problems which are proving difficult to overcome. We are investigating other server sources but our funds are limited. We hope that you will bear with us until this problem has been solved - we will be back.
Secretary, Ryerson Index
There is a facility for people who request lookups to make a donation. Perhaps those who use this wonderful site and service should contribute a little.

I also received the same email.
I've never actually had reason to request a lookup of anyone on the Index, but I'll certainly make a donation if I should need to.
It is too good a resource for lots of people to lose it. :-\
