Title: Hunt Otherwise Hayes
Post by: ejlrford on Saturday 31 January 09 16:13 GMT (UK)
I am looking for the birth of my wife's mother.
She was married to Harry Martin in 1925
The marrage certificate gave her name as Eileen Marjorie Hunt otherwise Hayes
The farther's name left blank.
I first met my wife in 1945, at that time her household was:-
John William Hayes known as Grandfather
Harry Martin Father
Eileen Marjorie Martin Mother
Eveline Eileen Martin Daughter
I have just looked at the 1911 census to find that:-
John  William Hayes Head
Arabella Hayes Wife
Eileen Marjorie Baxton adopted daughter  7 years old borne Cardiff Wales.
The address given is a known address for J W Hayes from family post cards.
Arabella died 1920
John died 1951
Eileen died 1982.
Can anyone help to find the birth of Eileen Marjorie????
HELP PLEASE EJ

I wonder why she took Arabella's maiden name, Hunt, when John and Arabella married in 1890. Could she have been the illegitimate daughter of a sister maybe? The only Eileen Marjorie birth I could find in the right period was of an Eileen Marjorie Baxter b. Sept 1905 Isle of Wight. Have you seen the actual census image or just a transcription?

What about this???

don't know if it is your family but

1901 shows
John William hayes 34
Arabella wife 37 b park Gate Yorks
and with them is a servant
Susannah marion Blexell15 b london
RG13 8 161 21

I have found Susannah's birth reg (paddington district)

Then in census 1891 it looks like Susannah's mother is married to a Martin and Susannah is entered as martin

then there is a birth
FreeBMD
Eileen marjorie Blaxill
Sept qtr 1906
Lewisham
1d 1195

I'll get more detail to post -or is this too complicated??

Looks good to me Suz!  :)

....so did they adopt the baby cos he was the father or just out of charity???

and Eileen's grandmother (Susannah's mum) was married to a Martin and then Eileen herself went on to marry a Martin? Or am I getting muddled?  :-\

Do you think Susannah is the Susannah Blaxall marrying in Paddington in 1908 to Frederick James or William Triptree?

amended: she married Frederick James I think as there are two births (Frederick W and George) in 1911 and 1915 with mmn Blaxall

I think the Susannah M Martin may well be Susannah martha martin -so we can cancel that coincidence!!!

I cannot find Susannah marion Blexall(Blexell) in 1891!

I'll hve another look - trying to not be too imaginative!!!

well I've had a look around -can't find Susanah M Blxall anywere in 1891- found a Susanah M Saunders 8 b lambeth living with grt gran Elizabeth Osborne and uncle John Duffy ??

I wonder if - this is my imagination- the hayes were fond of their ervant (Susannah) - maybe she went to take up a position in Cardiff and they kept in touch? Eileen was maybe not b in cardiff -perhaps Susannah went home to have the baby???

Perhaps Eileen took on the name Hunt Hayes -and that's why she is down as hayes fromerly Hunt.

Wonder if there are any school records which could give info on what name she used?

I'll have another ponder over the weekend

Hi. Yes the 1901 census is right we did not think of Eileen Marjorie being the child of the servant as all the postcards we have to Arabella about Eileen are signed "M".
We have a copy of the 1911 census in John's handwriting, and he has listed Eileen Marjorie Baxton as his adopted daughter with an age of 7, as she had her birthday in August this would have given her birth 1903, the date Harry gave when he registered her death.
Why would John list her as Baxton in 1911 and then as Hunt otherwise Hayes when she married in 1925.
We think that Eileen was 4 or 5 when she first lived with John & Arabella, nowhere in the post cards is there any reference to Baxton, Cardiff or wales.
We had hoped that the 1911 census would give us some answers but all we have is more questions.
Ideas we are short of any help is most welcome.

Do the post cards give any other clues???

Postmarks??? Any info about the person writing them??

This is my imagination again - but if it was Eileen's mother sending postcards -and she was the servant from1901 - then maybe she was known as marion (hence the "M") ???

Hi Suz,
Most postcards were from the south of England differant places. The only other point of intrest is one mention of Rob who could be "M" husband.
Thanks EJ
