Title: Can you please date this photo? Many thanks!
Post by: Claddagh on Tuesday 10 February 09 18:23 GMT (UK)
Hello everyone,

I hope that you are all in good spirits.

I was wondering if you might be able to date this photo of an unknown “Johnson” relative.  I assume that the photo was taken either in Ireland or England.  He is probably "Robert James", "Edward Patrick", "Gregory Lennon" and "Emily Catherine's" paternal uncle.  The possible uncles were born in 1866, 1867, 1874 and 1877.  Do these dates add up?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Take care and keep smiling!

Hi Claddagh...unfortunately I don't see a single thing in the photo that's dateable, since graduation attire has probably been the same since it was invented back in...well, whenever it was invented :P :D

So...any clues, if they exist at all, are going to have to come from the photo itself and the frame.

This is an extremely low-resolution scan. Would it be possible to scan it again at 300 dpi, in colour, and include all 4 corners of the frame? Also, if there is any printing or design on the back it would be helpful to have a scan of that as well...

Cheers,
China

Thanks Chinakay!  I've emailed my cousin in England asking him for those exact details.  Hopefully he'll reply shortly.  The first scan that I uploaded was ginormous and this version was grainy.  I'll see what I can do to bring back the details.  I know that it's not much to go on but I'm hoping that some clue lies in the frame itself.

Thanks again for your quick reply!

Enjoy your day!

Hi Claddagh...
Here's how to reduce a file size:

1. Open the photo in your photo editor (most pc's come with Microsoft Office Picture Manager).

2. Choose the Edit Picture function, then Resize. Do not Compress.

3. Resize the photo down about 5 or 10% (depending on how much "too big" it is), and save the result. Actually you should do a "Save as" so you don't permanently alter the original file.

4. Now check the file size by hovering your mouse over it. Still too big? Repeat, a little at a time and always saving the result, until you have a file under 500k.

Cheers,
China

Hello Claddagh
This style of oval frame became popular early 1900's and as he looks
late 20's -30 I would say it's down to the last 2 uncles.

I was thinking the same Jim as I have one from about the same time frame but I'd still like to see the whole thing.

For any restoration, Claddagh, it will have to be a higher resolution...

Hello everyone,

Hopefully my cousin will be able to resend the photo tomorrow.  I’ve tried to obtain a better scan.

Thanks Niksmum it’s beautiful and his eyes seem just the right colour.

Thanks Jim and Chinakay I’ll look into the possibility that this Johnson could be one of the last two youngest uncles.  The plot thickens.  LOL!

Take care and keep smiling!
