hi Val,
thanks for your reply, there is a possibility we have a connection. The Dows and Sands are great-great grandparents of mine. The oldest Dows I have traced are Archibald and Margaret who were wed sometime around 1818. They had a son Archibald who married Jane Sands in 1842. To the best of my knowledge they had six kids - Archibald, Robert, Margaret, Alexander, Jane and William. Archibald married AgnesGraham in 1871, Robert wd Elizabeth muir also in 1871 and William married Catherine Stewart in 1879.
The Sands go back a bit further. Robert wed Jean McLay in 1772 and I have traced 7 offspring - John, David, James, Jean, Robert, William and David. Robert married Margaret McQueen in 1812, William and Margaret Kennedy got together that same year. Robert and Margaret are my direct line. I have traced 9 kids - Janet, Robert, Archibald, Jane (my direct link), Robert (again), Mary, Margaret, Helen and James.
All of the above are from the maternal side of my family but I noticed that you also include the jolly family in your list. On my paternal side there are Jollys who hail from Kincardine. My grandmother married twice, her first husband Alexander Jolly was killed in 1918 during WW1. His parents were Robert Walker Jolly and Janr Douglas Annand who wed in Arbuthnot in 1879 and went on to have 8 children. Robert's parents were David and Isabella Stephen Gordon who had 9 kids.
It would be interesting to know if we are related in some
way. I reside in Glasgow and my e-mail is (*)

Hello!
I see that you are descended from Robert Sands and his wife Margaret MacQueen, so am I. Their eldest child, Janet, was my thrice-great-grandmother. I have collected a large amount of data on the Sands family in Port of Menteith Parish which I shall be glad to share with you.
Hope to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Terrance

Hello Terrance,
Thanks for making contact, it's nice to know that there are other members of the family out there, no matter how distant, are sharing a common purpose. I know that your thrice great grandmother married John McFarlane in 1835 and that Mary married John McGregor in 1847. My link comes through Janet Sands marrying Archibald A Dow at Port of Menteith on 6th February 1842. He died on 21st April 1888, she sometime after 1881.
To concentrate on my lineage for the moment, their son Robert, who was born at POM on11th December 1845, married Elizabeth Muir on 17th November 1871 in Airdrie. She was born there on 27th August 1847 dying there also on 8th August 1847. Robert lived to a ripe old age dying sometime after May 1942. Their daughter Margaret Harvie Dow was born in Airdrie on 25th September 1872. She married Thomas Whitelaw in Glasgow on 15th January 1892 and they had one son Thomas Whitelaw also born in Airdrie on 16th November 1892. Thomas senior died of cancer on3rd June 1897 while Margaret survived until 29th October 1953 when she died in Campbeltown. Their son Thomas married Mary McKenzie Campbell in Glasgow on 30th January 1920. She was born there on 4th June 1892 and survived her husband who was killed in action in Malta on 26th April 1942. They had 3 children the eldest, my mother Elizabeth Knox Smith Whitelaw was born on 11th December 1920 and died in June 1999. Her husband was John Malcolm born in Glasgow on 20th January 1920. They wed on 26th June 1942 and John died on 26th July 1983. They had 3 kids, I was the eldest of them, born on 4th April 1944. You have my e-mail, perhaps I could have yours and we could correspond further.
Yours

Hi Malcolm
What is Archibalds d.o.b? May be one of "mine" - I have Dow ancestors buried in Kincardine in Menteith cemetery. I was there and at Norrieston cemetery on Friday - showing a Canadian cousin the sights! The names you mention are ringing bells with me - suspect I may have seen their stone - do you know where they are buried?

Hello Everyone,
I wondering if i'm somehow related into all this aswell!
I have an Alexander Sands (1838) who married a Margaret Harvie (1839). From the census information I've been able to get hold of they had six children:
Mary Ann (1859)
Catherine (1861)
John (1862)
Margaret (1864)
Jane (1869)
Alexander (1870)
Catherine Sands married John McQueen (1853) and had a daughter named Catherine Harvie Sands McQueen in 1892, born at Polder.
She married Alexander Paterson (1883) and they had two children, their daughter Catherine Sands Paterson being my grandmother. They lived at Port of Mentieth and farmed South Flanders Farm.
I've yet to fully trace the Paterson side of my family but I know that Alexander's father was named Daniel (1841) who was married to an Elizabeth Stewart, both of whom were also from Port of Menteith and were married at Drymen Parish.
If anyone has any further information or pictures of the farm it would be really appreciated.
Kind regards,
Heather

Hi
I have some Sands and some McQueens .. and Stewarts. but not the ones you mention unfortuantely!
Here is a photo you might like - a line of gravestones at Port of menteith all belonging to the Sands family. If you pm me I will send you a transcription of all Sands gravestones in Port of Menteith and Norrieston. I believe there are some at Kippen too but I don't have any pics or transcriptions of those.
Can you give me more info re your Stewart relative? I have several of those from Drymen.
Val
-
::) oops try again
-
Thanks so much for the pictures,
On closer inspection I have three Stewarts in my family:
David Stewart who married Mary Cassels? this information is from the Marriage certificate of Elizabeth Stewart (1824) who married Daniel Paterson (1841) at Drymen Parish 30/12/1873. They had three children George (1875), David (1877) and Alexander Daniel (1883). Alexander married Catherine McQueen (1892) and had two children Daniel Stewart Patterson (1922) and Catherine Sands Patterson (1924)
Now on the other side...
John Sands was married to Ann Stewart and had Alexander Sands. Thier names were found from the marriage certificate of Alexander Sands (1838) and Margaret Harvie (1839) at Kippen Parish on 08/08/1958. They had six children:
Maryanne (1859)
Catherine (1861)
John (1862)
Margaret (1864)
Jane (1869)
Alexander (1870)
Catherine married John McQueen (1853) at Albion House, Thornhill, Kincardine on 08/06/1887 and their child Catherine Harvie Sands McQueen (1892) is the Catherine who married Alexander Paterson.
I've yet to find if their is a link with the Stewarts on either side as I know there were a lot of Stewarts in the area at that time. With regards to the McQueen link...
John McQueens parents I think were William and Jane (unknown maiden name) and aside from John they had four other children:
Samuel (1844)
Catherine (1847)
Margaret (1849)
Jane (1851)
Let me know if any of this adds up with your own research or if you can add to this.

Heather:
Your Sands line is related to mine (if memory serves). In order to confirm that I shall have to go digging in my attic and let you know what I find.
Terrance
-
I'll look forward to hearing what you can dig out ! :)
Heather
-
Absolutely, Terrence! I was just waiting for you to come along ;D
No direct line to mine I am afraid....
-
Slightly unrealted to the Sands information however I've just made a very interesting discovery...
Having hit deadends with the Sands I went off up the paterson line and decided to take a look at Elizabeth Stewart daughter of David (1791) and have been very pleasently surprised to find that there is a 90% chance that I am realted to King Robert II of Scotland, son of Walter Stewart and Marjorie Bruce, daughter of Robert the Bruce.
Very hopeful I do have some Royal Blood in me, if not I'll take a look at Ann Stewart, I'm determined! :)
-
In that case we would be distant cousins!
Suggest you check out the forums for the Stewarts of Balquhidder research group... masses of info and friendly folks (eg ME! haha ;D)
google it - easy to find
val

This is where I got the information from, I've just spent the last 2hours reading the website and making notes. Having not done history at school after the age of 12 I didn't remember anything about Scottish Royalty past what I know from 'Braveheart'! But I'm definately a desendent from Elizabeth Stewart, daughter of Mary and David. This is the VI branch Stewarts of Coille Mhor at Gartachoil. She doesn't appear on the website as it only looks at the 1841 census but she is there in the 1851 census aged 9 and her parents details are given in her marriage certificate. I wonder if you have any information that dates back from David and Mary?
-
I did find some Gartachoil stuff recently at the National Archives of Scotland... will have a look. Part of the Dalveich branch of Ardvorlich from what I recall. Where are you living?
-
I live in Stirling - the family havn't really moved much!
I've just discovered the marriage certificate of David and Mary Cassels. In 1823 in Drymen Parish. From what I gather David was living at Auchentroig at the time. I'm not sure if this is a place or not, or whether it is still near gartachoil.
Any information you have would be great. :)

Thats amazing! :)
I'd actually be interested in all the information if thats not to much trouble. I'm on Genes Reunited if you have a tree there it would probably be the least hassel way to see the connections.
I'd be really interested in the ancestors you mention firstly.
In what way are we cousins?

I've just seen your note from earlier this year which refers to your grandfather Thomas Whitelaw and says: "... Their son Thomas married Mary McKenzie Campbell in Glasgow on 30th January 1920 ..."
I have Mary McKenzie Campbell on my tree - the daughter of Thomas Campbell and Elizabeth Knox Smith, who married in 1891. If I have it all correct, Eliz Knox Smith was born in 1868, the daughter of William Wilson Smith and Mary McKenzie, who married in 1865. That Mary McKenzie was born abt 1844, daughter of John McKenzie and Elisabeth Knox who married in 1844. I am a descendant of Margaret McKenzie, a sister of Mary. John McKenzie and Elisabeth Knox are my 2xgt-grandparents and your 3xgt-grandparents; that makes us third cousins once-removed.
If you would like to share info up the McKenzie & Knox lines, could you send me a Personal Message with your email?
Cheers

I haven't made it far enough back to determine whether my Sands family ties into this one, but it's worth a shot to see if anyone has any information.
I am looking for the ancestry of John Sands, born approximately 1861 in Ireland. Married Jane in 1885 and immigrated to the United States (specifically Pennsylvania) in 1888. The Pennsylvania census says both John and Jane were born in Ireland and their eldest son, also named John, was born approximately one year before they left Ireland (1887). They had other children in the States - Andrew Sands (1890), James Sands (1893), Bernhard Sands (1895), Marie / Mary Sands (1896), Elizabeth / Susan Sands (1898), Agnes Sands (1900), Edward Sands (1903), Hellen Sands (1904) and Joseph Sands (1910).
Does anyone happen to know whether this family ties into any of the Sands families you've researched? I've reached a dead end. Other than the census where they claim to have immigrated in 1888, I can't find a passenger list or any other means of determining how they got to the United States.
I'd appreciate any information whatsoever!

I am very new to this forum i.e. I joined today but I found it using google and I was very excited to find the name Sands of Port of Menteith as this is a line I have been tracing. In Chevalier's post of 3/9/09 under paragraph 2, he mentioned John Sands of Ward of Goodie farm who I am almost certain is my great great grandfather. In the 1881 census he is living at this farm with wife Margaret (nee McNab?) and 5 of their children the youngest of whom is 7. So John Sands must have been about 70 when this child was born!
There is another child Jeanie who is about 17 in 1881 who, I believe, is living with her uncle at a nearby farm. She appears in the 1871 census living at Wart of Gooch (sic) Farm. I believe Jeanie is my great grandmother who I can trace through my late mother's side of the family. I see from Chevalier's post that Margaret is John's second wife. Alexander, who is John's son by his first marriage must be my great grandmother's half brother.
Not sure if this is old news but I have some more information if anyone is interested.

Sorry about the delay in replying. This is some information I have about the Sands family.
Jane (or Jeanie) Sands was the daughter of John and Margaret Sands of Ward of Goodie Farm, near Port of Menteith. Jane was born about 1864 when her father would have been about 58 years old.
Jane married James Nimmo (Nimmo is my middle name and, unusually, what I am always called!) probably about 1882. James worked on the farm. James’s family came from Carriden on the Firth of Forth.
James and Jane had 5 children of whom the second youngest was Mary Nimmo who married James Kay, a farmer from Gargunnock near Stirling. My mother, Margaret, was one of their 6 children.
As far as I can gather, Jane Sands had 3 brothers and 1 sister but I do not know any more about them.
