After months and months searching for the elusive Arthur Herbert/Chester Brown and his wife Agnes Mabel, I finally found them on the 1911 census. It still does not answer the question of why they fostered out my father in law, Arthur Baron Brown, in 1903. Maureen

Not sure what the question is, but Boston is in Erie County, NY. Do you want to find Arthur on US censuses?

I would appreciate knowing when and where he was born. On another census he says Brooklyn, New Jersey. He was back in Bath on the 1891 census with his family. I think his parents went to New York about 1880 or just before and he was born about 1881/2. This guy is a bit of a mystery having been Arthur Chester Brown on his marriage certificate and Arthur Herbert on his son's birth certificate. The son, my father in law, born in 1903 was fostered out. I am interested in knowing why they left their son and where they went to between 1903 and 1911 when they turn up in Bath. I thought perhaps they had gone to America and did not want to take a baby with them. Thanks for your offer, Maureen

It looks like Arthur Herbert/Chester was born after the 1880 census; the 1890 census was destroyed by fire; he was in the UK before the 1900 census; and I don’t see him or Agnes on the 1910 census. What were his parents’ names? It might be possible to locate them in the US in 1880.

Arthur's parents were Walter Henry Brown, born 1856 in Ipswich, Suffolk and the mother was Matilda Ann nee Hillard, born 1855. They resided in Bath. Thanks for your help. Maureen

It seems likely that Arthur was born in Brooklyn, NY. You could look for his birth at:

Thanks again for your help. I will look at those two links and see if I can proceed any further. Maureen

Is it possible to find out whether Arthur Herbert Brown and his wife Agnes Mabel were residents in America from 1903 to 1911? He does say on the census that he is an American citizen! Or can I found out if he travelled to America with his wife? Maureen

A lot of Arthur and Agnes Browns entered the US in those years. I have not been able to spot this pair travelling together and I don't see them in the 1910 census.

Thanks. I thought that would be a problem with such a common name! Maureen
