I am unable to find the birth of my g.grandfather Henry Jones, born Bettws, Montg. about 1858, on IGI.
According to his marriage cert. in 1880, when his age is given as 22, his father Francis Jones was deceased.
He is listed in 1881 & 1891 censuses, one of which varies his date of birth to 1856.
I cannot find him on 1861 census and do not have access to 1871.
If someone has access to 1871 census, he would have been between 12-15 yrs of age. Perhaps the family were across the border in Shropshire in 1861/1871?
Access to the parish records of Bettws would be of value.
Can anyone help?

I also have a Jones interest and its not easy if they were miners they would move from pit to pit my family of Jones had 13 children all born different places I have a bit of info on the Jones families but all from North Wales

As Henry was born somewhere between 1856 and 1856 you could try searching the Birth, Marriages and Deaths Civil Registration Index for England and Wales. There are two sites available:
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ The transcription of the index is an ongoing project so please note that it is not yet complete. Please see the site for details of coverage. Searching is free.
http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/ The index is complete here, you can search the index for free, but to view the results pages there is a charge. See site for full details of their pay-pre-view service.

Dear Jan
Thank you for your comments.
I have been researching my family history for a number of years and have made satisfactory progress in most lines. I was aware of the sites you mentioned and have drawn a blank in my search for Henry JOnes' birth. It is of course quite possible that his birth was not registered as it had not become compulsary at that date.
I live away from Mid-Wales at present and will have to make a visit to search at Council Offices, Newtown soon.

There was a Henry JONES, 13, farm servant, b.Bettws with James JONES farmer of 150 acres at Red House, Celcowan in 1871. A possibility?

Thank you very much - a strong possibility I would say.
However, do you know where Celcowan is ? Never heard of the place before.
Also, if you have ready access to the Montg. 1871 census, would you kindly look up to see if there is a Francis Jones listed. This is Henry's father, who was deceased at the time of Henry's wedding in 1880. I have no other info to help - in 1871, when Henry was 13, Francis could be any age from 30 to 60+.
Thanks.

1871 - there are loads! These are the ones residing in Montgomeryshire:
Francis JONES 51 b.Guilsfield in Pool Middle & Welshpool
Francis JONES 55 b.Llandysilio in Meifod
Francis JONES 69 b.Llanerfyl in Llangadfan
Francis JONES 30 b.Guilsfield in Guilsfield
Francis JONES 60 b.Llanfair in Garth Ucha
Francis JONES 70 b.Llanwnog in Esgob
Francis JONES 56 b.Buttington in Buttington
Francis JONES 71 b.Machynlleth in Sgyborycold
Francis JONES 36 b.Llangadfan in Ffestiniog
Would think that you stand a much better chance if you can find Henry in 1861 or a birth/baptism from the parish register.
I don't know where Celcowan is either I'm afraid.
Best wishes

Hello Casalguidi
Thank you once more. Yes, it may be one of them!
There is no sign of Henry or Francis in 1861, so I am guessing the family may have resided in Shropshire at that time. I could try the Shropshire Look Ups.
Nevertheless, I must make the effort to travel to Newtown or Aberystwyth to check the Parish Registers.
Thanks again.

Hi Bryn.........
This Celcowan (well that's what it looks like) appears to be in the LLanllwchaiarn St Asaph area/district.

Hello Casalguidi
Thank you - Llanllwchaiarn makes a lot of sense, and Celcowan may well be a corruption of this.
I'll keep on plugging away.
