Catherine McGovern was the widow of Peter McGovern when she died in Albert St Govan in 1862. Her age on the DC is given as 45. Death was registered by her nephew Thomas Ward of Victoria St Govan
I can't find Catherine or Peter on any census records
-
What was Catherine's maiden name? I have spotted a Peter Mcgovern in the 1841 census. He's a soldier,30,born in Ireland, stationed at Edinburgh Castle. There is also a James Mcgovern,soldier,35,also born in Ireland.
Regards,

Catherine's maiden name was Ward
Their son married Mary Kerr in Pollokshaws in 1864, his age was given as 24

Hi sancti,
Think this is James ... quite a confusing entry, but obviously had a lot of relatives staying with him. Including his mum under her maiden name.

Only births I can see for Bridget and Hugh ... Peter/Patrick can be interchangeable? Or even a second marriage for Catherine?
Bridget McGlinchey, b. 16th May 1855 Paisley (Abbey) -- parents Patrick McGlinchey and Catherine Ward
Hugh McGlinsha, b. 29th December 1856 Old Monkland -- parents Patrick McGlinsha and Catherine Ward
This might be her in 1851 (indexed on SP under "Warss"), with father. Although it definitely says "son" for Thomas and James, I think they are Catherine's.
Address: Nitshill, Renfrewshire

Catherine Ward, dau., unm., 36, housekeeper, b. Campsie
Thomas Ward, son, 13, ? calico print/paint?, b. Barrhead
James Ward, son, 11, [same as above], b. Nitshill

Thanks Hume, from what you have posted it's no wonder the family turned into a brickwall for me.
Now I need to find out when/why they became McGoverns
-
I have found Catherine on the 1841 census for Nitshill with her father Thomas, under the name Ward but I can't see the McGovern boys, Thomas or James
-
I found the DC for James McGovern in 1882, it gives his parents as
Peter McGovern and Catherine McGlinchey, formerly McGovern, m.s. Ward
Looks like Peter McGovern died before 1851 census but I can't understand why the children are called Ward in that census
-
Hi Sancti and Hume :)
Re the 1841 census, there may be two Catherine Wards, with father Thomas perhaps. There is also this entry:
Thos Wardh 60, miner, b. Ireland
Catharine Wardh 25, b. Scotland
Mary Wardh 24, b. Scotland
Mary Crosson 4
Thos McGavern 3
John McGavern 1 ..maybe James?

Thanks Monica, thats the census I downloaded from SP but couldn't make out the last 3 names.
Looks like Peter McGovern died early in the marriage and has become the end of that line :(

Has anyone found Peter McGovern on the 1841 census? I am stumped as to where he was or if he was even alive.
I can’t even find a marriage for Peter McGovern and Catherine Ward either...
It seems they only had two children together (James McGovern and Thomas McGovern) this has become a massive dead end in my tree, can anyone help?! On James’ death record his father’s profession isn’t recorded either so can’t use that to find out where he was in 1841 (if he was even alive or in the country at that time...)
