Hi everyone!
Edgar Arnold JONES was born circa 1895 in South Australia. According to his Army Records, his father's name is John Edwin JONES and he was living in Blinman in 1916 when his son enlisted.
I would appreciate help to find any BD&M information for John Edwin Jones and his family. Would there be any chance of his being mentioned in the BISA?
With a smile :)

Hello Kris!
Just arrived home to find you have posted this wonderful information about the JONES family for me. :) Thank you very much.
If it's not asking too much, would it be possible to trace any information about his wife, Susannah Maria MILLER and her family as well? You have identified Susanna's father as being Samuel MILLER.
With a smile

Kris...thank you again for this information. :)
And to think I thought this would be straight forward!!!! ::) ::)
What I now find on the BISA Samuel MILLER is married to Ann Maria THOMAS, and on the BD&M Ann Maria CLIFT! Death dates annd place od death are the same. A little variety in children's names, but, Susanna's birth would fit neatly between Alice and Emma in 1862, Gus/George?/and Samuel between Elizabeth and James?
Two couples with so much in common living in the same area or are they one and the same family? How to explain the different surnames for Ann Maria?
Mmmmmmm!!!!!
A perplexed Elsie

Hi Elsie,
I do not think there are two families. I suspect an error has been made with her name in the BISA. She is CLIFT in everything else.
Cheers Kris :)
-
Thanks Kris. I was hesitant to just assume.
So then, in your opinion, would it be unreasonable to accept that Susanna is definitely a child of this family, Kris?
I read so often that one should not assume, but the evidence for Susanna and the other two children point strongly to belonging to this couple, wouldn't you say?

Always tricky when there is no birth listed. Samuel was a farmer so you could try for a will. Susanna married at the residence of Mr Miller Pt Germein so I do think he is likely her father. The marriage cert may even confirm it was her fathers residence. There is certainly no Samuel and Ann Maria Thomas having children in SA, so I don't think that is a problem......Kris :)

Have you seen the photos of JE Jones' store at Blinman?

JE Jones, from the information I have found over the years, was in the Yednalue area in the mid-to-late 1880s; I have him applying to occupy a house at Yednalue Station in 1885, and writing about the poor state of the road from Yednalue to Curnamona in 1889. Perhaps he was a hawker - he wrote a letter of complaint about unlicensed hawkers in 1892.
From 1896 to 1912 he seems to have been a storekeeper at both Blinman and Parachilna at various times. Parachilna was the railway siding for Blinman, so it is possible that he had stores at both - or a store at Blinman and an agency at Parachilna. He leased a block or two at Parachilna (or in the Hundred of Nilpena, which includes Parachilna township).
From 1912 to 1915 or thereabouts he was a member of the Angorichina Vermin Board, a local board responsible for building and maintaining the vermin fence around the Angorichina and Artimore pastoral leases - just to the east of Blinman.
I haven't ever checked the Sands and MacDougall Directories for entries for him over that period.

Hello Frank!
My apologies for only now responding to your posting. My son was married last weekend and we have only just returned home.
I was thrilled to read your informative postings. Fantastic new information about JE JONES, and aren't the photos priceless? Thank you for directing me to them.
Time to get the atlas out again!
How did you find out about the letters and and also the application to occupy a house, Frank?

Thank you Kris! :)
On the basis of the information you have provided, I have just spent some time searching the NAA site for any mention of any of the sons of Thomas Herbert Jones that you have listed for me.
Sadly I have so far found that Spencer Roy was killed in action in France. His army records make for sobering reading. I have just finished reading Ben Elton's book, "The First Casualty" and in it Elton so vividly describes a horrifying experience to one of the lead characters that is identical to that of Spencer. Terrifying.
Apparently another brother was also killed, according to a letter to the army from his mother, F. Jones, but I have yet to find which one.
Thanks again for your help Kris. Much appreciated. :)

I actually have a 5th child recorded for Thomas & Florence:
Victor Allan was born 3rd June 1897 - also in Riverton.
I believe that Florence is descended from John KEAST & Grace KEAST (probably cousins) who married in St Allen, Cornwall in 1770.
Cheers,
Phil

Phil is quite correct Elsie,
Sorry, I somehow missed Victor :-[

Thank you for this follow-up Phil and Kris. :)
I'll now have another look at the NAA site and see if I can find Victor.
Cheers

I see this is an old topic but I hope that I can help, I have much family that come from the Oodnadatta, Peterborough, Jamestown and Flinders Ranges region and do have access to members of my family that are still alive.

Hello S. Jones.
Welcome to Rootschat.
My main areas of interest for the Jones family in the Flinders region are Parachilna and Blinman, and later Crystal Brook.
I am researching specifically the families of John Edwin Jones and Susanna Maria Miller. (Susanna's family lived in Port Germein.)
Do any paths cross?
