Title: Have got my dads wedding certificate
Post by: snatcher on Friday 27 March 09 06:55 GMT (UK)
Am new to this so treat me gently  ::) Trying to trace my fathers line.I have no known relatives to ask about this, only have his marriage certificate which names his father. Also my father had a brother and I do not know his name. All I know is that he had children and that they moved to Toronto,Canada.

Any ideas as to where I should look next would be appreciated  :)

What are the names of your father and grandfather?   What is the information on the marriage cert - year, names, ages, occupations, witnesses?

Hi snatcher,
welcome to RootsChat.

I would suggest that you think before putting all that information on line as it may reveal security passwords for banking or similar but first, if the date of the certificate is some time ago, you may be able to use the name and age to find a birth registration on:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

or one of the other sites.

If the name is not too common, you should be able to recognise the exact entry and find the mother's maiden name (if born after 1911).  then you could use the family name and mother's maiden name on the same site to identify other siblings in the same family.

 ???

The names of deceased father/grandfather should present no problems on here.  There must be thousands of posts with the same information.

If we can offer help, need some information to get going.

You may have to get your father's birth cert for his parents' names.  I'm just looking in the 1911, but it's pretty tricky to find him.

I've posted a link to freebmd.

The gro for the certificate is

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

register
page one, fill in and answer YES you have the General Register Index which is
name, year, quarter, district, vol, page
page two, delivery details
page three, fill in the red-starred bits only

cost £7 with this information, delivery is quite quick at the moment.

You will also need to have a look at the censuses on Ancestry or Findmypast.
Ancestry does a 2week free session, with your credit card, phone to cancel before the 2 weeks is up.
Findmypast is subscription or pay-as-you-go.
Familysearch has the 1881 census free.

So I need to use that link to get my dads birth certificate using DOB Jul/Aug/Sep Gateshead Vol 10A page 1066 ? Will it have my grandfathers address on?

Just looking at the 1891 census 1901 census and there only seems to be on William R Stevenson but this one is born abt. 1887 and he is born in Collierley, Durham.

RG13/4666/94/page 45

Perhaps this is them - if so they are living with their son in law and presumably a daughter, Edward & Mary Oliver and their 3 children

John Stephenson, father in law, age 54, Mason's lab., born Ovingham, Durham
Christiana Stephenson, mother in law, age 51, born Collierley, Durham
Robert Stehenson, son, brother in law, age 27, Mason's lab., born Collierley
William R Stephenson, brother in law, age 14, born Collierley

Welcome to RootChat  :D

(correction on year of census - apologies for any confusion I may have caused  :-\)

Hi John,

The 1911 would probably be the next step, once you have more details of your father's family, as, with the birth certificate you should get details of both parents names and a recently declared occupation of the (grand)father as well as your father's name.  Your father's second name does not seem to have been listed unless he is in the part not yet released (or mistranscribed which unfortunately is quite likely, from experience).

It's at:

http://www.1911census.co.uk

Free to search but need to pay to view transcription or original page unless you can get into the National Archives at Kew where it's free to view and only 20p per page to print out.

You may need to wait a week or two though as I understand Gatehead was included with Northumbria for some reason and that's not released yet, but other parts of the North East are already on-line.

Also, once you have both parents' names then you will be able to search for their marriage on FREEBMD, and so on.

Post by: silvery on Friday 27 March 09 10:13 GMT (UK)
1901 - William R Stephenson, brother in law, age 14, born Collierley

t would make him very young (but obviously not impossible) to be father in 1903.

I'm still looking in 1911.  there is one William R Stephenson 22 , no Thomas in the family.   Will carry on looking.

But the easiest and most reliable thing is to get the birth certificate.
Title: Re: Have got my dads wedding certificate

Hi again,

you can usually get certs from either the GRO or from the local register office for the registration.

GRO charge extra unless you provide them with the full reference from the national index.

Local register offices can be more flexible (they don't use national index references and sometimes provide a certificate that is derived from a photocopy of the original entry) but some make a charge for postage costs.

Either way it should have the address of the informant (usually a parent in England and Wales) and the full name (including maiden name) of the mother.

Oh that looks very good indeed, ivanidea.   Nice work!

The name switch is often found.  also the names on marriage cert for the fathers can be different to what the father is known by or vice versa.  eg called Richard John but known by family as Jack.   Or sometimes even invented, or a stepfather.

My own father put his name as William Patrick on the marriage cert.  Wasn't called William at all!    Good job I knew my mum's name  ;D ;D

Well my dads birth certificate has now arrived and I have the following information from it

Dads name - John Burnett Stephenson

DOB - 23 July 1903

Place of birth - 36 Affleck Street Gateshead

My grandads name - William Stephenson, occupation railway engine driver

Grandmothers name -  Catherine Stephenson (nee Haveron - thats what it looks like anyway!!)

Just after a bit direction off my peers as to what my next move should be. Obviously I will have to eventually get my plastic out, thats not a problem.I would just like to do a bit delving by myself first
::)

My two aims are to follow back the family name as far as possible. The second part is to get in touch with my relations who live or once lived in Toronto. My dad had 3 sisters,Catherine,Beatrice and Betty. He also had a brother - possibly called George.I believe that George gives me the Canadian link.

All ideas gladly taken on board

Thanks    John  :)

To be certain you have the correct people,  you really need the 1887 marriage certificate which would give you the names and occupations of their fathers.

But this looks interesting

1871   RG10/5050/102/72

William STephenson 32 tinsmith b Oldham Lancs
Eleanor 29 b Heworth Durham
Catherine 8
William 5
Alice 3
Joshua 1
Alice Stephenson,67 mother b Oldham Lancs

children all b Heworth.

and on the same page - possibly brother - but a bit odd that the children are all named the same (naming pattern?) and are all the same ages.

John Stephenson 24 engineman b Oldham Lancs
Elizabeth 24 b Felling Durham
William 5
Alice 3
Joshua 1

children all b Felling

Ellen 39
Catherine 18 dom serv
William 15 slaters lab
Alice 13

It looks like William's occupation may be 'stoker', but difficult to read.  It makes sense as he goes on to be a railway engine driver.

I have found 1871 a William with father George who is an engine driver for the NE railway, but the marriage cert says George is a miner.

Keep looking............

Looking in the International Genealogial Index (IGI) compiled by the Latter Day Saints there is

father:  George Stephenson     mother:  Frances

all dates of christening
Susannah 23rd Sept 1821
Mary -- 15th Feb 1827
Jane - 11th Sep 1831
George - 30th Marh 1929
William - 13th July 1834

These are extracted records, so taken from the parish records, can be relied on .  Assuming there's been no mistakes in transcribing.

But -   can't work it out.   Maybe there are two families in Heworth, one with Robrt as head, and one with George.

edit:  Neither of these two lots of families 'fit' do they.

I would download a family tree programme and put them all in it.  Once they are all in a programme, you can export the gedcom (list of names) from and to any other programme.

Try this to be going on with   -   http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

The 'companion' will print out three generations, but if you phone them, it costs about $6 for the full programme.

I cannot believe within a few short weeks of  not knowing who my grandfather was I know who my great -grandfather was  :) As you say its nice to see that Burnett theme as well. Thanks so much to everyone who has spent time doing these searches for my benefit. I owe you all big style.Need any help with photographical stuff, just say the word.Quite adept in Photoshop so if you have a picture you would like enhancing eg removing unwanted background objects, removing spots from faces etc I am your man. By the way mods its all free gratis and there is no commercial catch here.

[My cousin has my mothers side well sussed its my dads side where all the blanks are.

Thanks   John

Just thought the cousin might be interested in the findings?  Or is your Dad's side of no interest to him?  Perhaps your mum is his aunt, and her husband is not a big priority in his tree.

Hi.... My name is Chris Stephenson and I was searching for information on my father, John Burnett Stephenson and I came upon this site. My father was born near Sedgefield in Durham county in 1912. His mothers surname was Burnett, hence his middle name. I wonder if somehow we are connected?
Regards, Chris

Well.

On freebmd (http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl) there is

June quarter 1912, district Sedgefield, vol 10a, page 363
John B Stephenson
mmn Burnett

What was his mother's first name?   Could look for the marriage to see if anything ties in with what's already been posted.

(There was another John Burnett Stephenson born in 1909 but he died in the same quarter as the birth.  Probably the same family re-using the name. )
