Title: Baptism for Hannah Cooper please *COMPLETED*
Post by: Debbie658 on Thursday 02 April 09 04:28 BST (UK)
Hi,

Am trying to find family of Hannah Cooper as well as a baptism for her.  The only information I have is that she was 32 on the 1851 England Census and b. LongSutton Lincolnshire.  Not 100% sure but I think her father was John Cooper  :-\.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi lizdb

Yes, this is the one where I found Hannah, she had married Joseph Hopkins. But I can't seem to find a baptism for her or a marriage for her parents.  On this 1851 Census it has her place of origin as Long Sutton Lincs but I can't find her or any siblings on the IGI.  Thanks for your help with this much appreciated :)

I have fiches of transcripts of the Tydd St Giles registers and had a look at them today.  There were several HOPKIN(S) baptisms there in the 1840s but no kids of Joseph and Hannah, so perhaps they were RC or "chapel".

Thanks for looking on the fiches GeoffE but Hopkins was her married name.  I'm looking for a Hannah COOPER born about 1820/21??.  On lizdb's first post it has Hannah with a John Cooper on the 1851 Census so I'm assuming that John was her father.  Having real problems finding a baptism for her and a marriage for her parents.

First rule of Family History - NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING!

Would be worth getting the marriage cert to see who Hannah names as her father. If John, a farmer, then we are on the right lines.

Certainly it looks like he is he Dad from all the evidence so far.

Second rule - take it one step at a time!

Find out all you can about one person before leaping back to the next, or you may find you are leaping in the wrong direction!
That is why Geof was looking for Hannah and Joseph's children after they settled in Tydd St Giles. And as he said, no christening might (or might not) indicate that the family were Catholic or non conformist .... which might also be true of the Coopers, who knows!

Although Hannah says born Long Sutton, she could have been christened anywhere, so it will be hard to find without knowing a bit more about the family anyway.
There seems to be a possible sister Keturah, who may ne easier to trace. We know she married Collyer. Perhaps we can find her on later censuses to see where she was born - that might give a clue as to whether John was in Long Sutton for any length of time.

All sorts of possible scenarios, but lots of work needed to work methodically through the families movements, if we can.

Hannah gives Long Sutton as p o b on 1851 - do you have her on later censuses?  Where does she say then?

Have just been looking at Keturah, to see if she gives us any moreclues about the family

We have her in 1842 censuse
hen she married Charles Collyer in 1842
Cant see her in 1851
She seems to remarry to John Cliff Trumble in 1858, in London, (ref 1c 160)
In 1861 she and John are in Leeds - John comes from Leeds, at RG9 3394 71 3
Keturah then gives her place of birth as Lincolnshire Sutton St Mary, age 35.

So it does look as if the Coopers were in that "Sutton" area of Lincolnshire for a bit, rather than just Hannah being born there.

Long Sutton is/was Sutton St Mary's - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LIN/LongSutton/

Hi liz and Geoff,

Thank you both for your help with this, I really appreciate it. :)   Hannah and Joseph Hopkins came out to Australia in 1855 with their four children: Joseph Jnr, Mary Elizabeth, Benjamin and Keturah.  I'll order the Marriage Cert like you suggested and that way I'll know who her father was.

Thanks also for looking up all that information on Keturah liz.  The other side of my family comes from Leeds.
