Title: Burwell Baptism - COMPLETED thanks to GeoffE
Post by: Gillywilly on Tuesday 07 April 09 18:53 BST (UK)
Hi,

I wondered if someone could do a look up in the Burwell baptism's for a William or Cash Martinson 1839/1841 please?

I cannot find it on FreeBMD & he married in the Louth District under the name of Cash in 1862.  I have found him on the 1851 Census aged 11 living with a Thomas & Elizabeth Clay at Burwell as Cash Martinson.  I cannot find him on the 1861 & he is down as William on the 1871 Census in Hull.

There is a William Martinson born c1843 at Ulceby on the 1851 so have ruled him out. There is another one on the 1861 born c1843 in Lincoln but he is an engineer whereas the one I am looking for is a bricklayer's labourer, but cannot rule this one out yet.

I would be very grateful of any help as he is a mystery man.

Just to let you know what you're up against, Genuki says-

"Anglican parish registers exist from 1586. As of late 2004, the registers have not been deposited in the Lincs. Archives, nor have they been filmed by the LDS Family History Library. And copies of the Bishop's Transcripts have not been deposited either."

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LIN/Burwell/

Interesting there was a 1 year old MARTINSON in Burwell in 1841 - indexed as Arthur (but looks more like Swithin to me).

EDIT: see FreeBMD

Hi Geoff,

I was hoping you would pick this up :)

Would the registers still be at the Church?

Any suggestions on the next move? I suppose the best way forward would be to order a copy of the Marriage Certificate. It is just I am doing as a favour for a friend so didn't really want to be ordering certificates at this stage but will do if that is the only way of finding out his father as I do not want to go down the wrong line.

Many thanks,

Gill

I think that "the registers have not been deposited" means they are still at the church.  This is a serious drawback ... no baptisms, no marriages (him or his mother), no burials, no nuthin.  I was going to mention that I could possibly have a look in the Archives next week, but there's no point as the register is not there!

He was possibly born on St Swithin's day (15 July), his father may have been a CASH.  It seems you/your friend has a choice ...

1) Marriage cert - perhaps a father's name, perhaps not, or something made up ::)
2) Birth cert - a mother's name
3) Find out what can be gleaned from the church at Burwell - if you can find who to contact ???

Perhaps seek advice from here (they should know how to contact Burwell) http://www.stjameschurchlouth.com/context/parish.html

Hi Geoff,

How did you come to the conclusion he may have been born on St Swithin's day?

I have now written to ask if they hold the registers at the Church, I did think maybe his mother's maiden name was Cash & never thought about that being his father's name.

I must admit that even on the MC the father's name may be blank or made up as it did happen.

Thank you so much for your advice, fingers crossed ;)

Just a guess ;)

Have you ever heard of a kid called Swithin before?  There were actually 10 registered up to 1851 - 6 of them registered in Q3 of the year.

Hi Geoff,

No, I had never heard that name before but for the Martinson one it was transcribed as Arthur on A.....y although it was transcribed as Swithin on another site.

You certainly are on the ball, I never thought about that & it is so logical.

What we do without you :D :D

Hi Geoff,

Didn't have any success writing to a few people & then wrote to Lincoln Archives & received the reply "We hold the parish registers of Burwell dating from 1586 to 1976 (baptisms),  to 1971 (marriages) and to 1812 (burials)  Bishops' transcripts date from 1561 to 1825"

I just thought you may be interested to know this.

Sent for the Birth Certificate for Swithin Cash MADDISON so hopefully it will be the correct one.

Thanks for your help,

Gill

Hi Geoff,

I just thought I would update you.  The Birth Certificate came through this morning & it is in the name of Maddison but as his mother, Mary, could only make her mark, I am sure it is the correct person.  You were correct about the date of birth, 15th July 1839 & no father's name or occupation given.

On the 1841 Census is a Mary Martinson aged 20 at Wootton & it looks like a marriage for her at Brigg to a James Rands in Oct/Dec 1841.  I am not sure this is the correct one as she has Goxhill as her place of birth.

There is also a death in Lincoln District Apr/Jun 1840 of a Mary Martinson but of course no age given.

Any thoughts?

Gill

Hi Gill ... that one was just a babe :(

It seems I was totally wrong about the whereabouts of Burwell registers - there is the baptism of a Mary MARTINSON (and 4 siblings) in IGI batch C034981

Likely parents would seem to be John MARTINSON and Maria CIVIL who married 18 Dec 1809 at Swaby.

Hi Geoff,

Well, that rules out both Mary Martinson's that I found so it looks like back to the drawing board.

I will now update my records with the information you have found, I see she had a brother called William so I bet Swithin has changed his name to his favourite Uncle's - think I would as well!!

Thank you again for the additional information (re marriage & death) and will now see if I can find any more about Mary!
