1851 cencus and George Totterdell is down as --Clerk & Accountant.
1861 census and George is now down as --Woolen Warehouseman
1841 census-- so what do you think the following says please ?? poli :)

Office or Officer ..... for the first word

Where is he living? Just tried to look at whole page, but couldnt find it! (3 GT's there but none were this one)

Thanks for the replies, yes the word 'office--officer'--is reasonably clear now that it's pointed out to me so presume he had the same job for 1841 and 1851
lizdb--the address was ---Catherine Street, St.Georges East, Tower Hamlets.

Still havent found the entry - but never mind! I have found a John Tottendall and family in Tower Hamlets (Walborough Str), probably related, same writing I think, and he is an Excise Man. Also on the page is someone who is an "Officer of Customs"
Now your excerpt looks like "Officer of ...?...." but doesnt look like Customs.
But it certainly looks likely he is in that line of business.

I did find the entry and downloaded it . When I enhanced the image it definitely looked like Officer of Excise with a tick over the top
Excise duty is a tax levied on goods or services rather than on people.
We still have HM customs and Excise today

Sorry . I just noticed they changed HM Customs and Excise to HM Revenue and Customs in 2005, when it merged with the Inland Revenue.
It still collects Excise Duties on things like tobacco and alcohol though!

Many thanks Rootschatters, looking back through my Totterdell certs there was a Totterdell father on a marriage cert as Excise Officer in 1846 [not George's father tho'.] so looks like it was in the family. Wonder why George went on to be a 'Woolen Warehouse' man?
Make our lives a lot easier if they all stayed living in the same place and with the same job!!! ::) ::)

Sure looks like last word ends with k.
"Officer of" seems clear
Then next or so letter looks like x but I could not make Excise or Customs
I was an Officer of C&E but back in1841 I understand the one were Officer of Customs and the other Excise Men.
I see John was an Exciseman and on opposite page there is an Officer of Customs.
I could not actually find George in 1841 or 1851 - I wonder what names Ancestry has transcribed?
I was hoping their copy might help the reading.
I see the 1861 that he was born Gosport c1814 and I suppose Woolen warehouseman might mean that he ran the warehouse rather than chucked the skins or bales about.

Ancestry image is much better than the posted.
the last letter is not k overflowing into born into county it is an N for not born in county. The n starts with a very high loop and is the same in other items on page.
The last word appear to start E and I make the whole word out as Excise ie Officer of Excise
The black part is a statistician's tick

1851 he is according to Ancestry a TATTERDELL !!! HO 107/1548/344/10
believe me, this name has had countless variations ::)
I've enjoyed reading all these posts and for your entertainment you'll be delighted to hear that i will shortly be posing yet another vexing query re George's family --watch this space ;D ;)

Well I was pleased to find he and John had both been 19th century colleagues of mine.
I submitted alternate/corrections to 1841 and 1851 just names
could not fix Aberstake Garport, Hampshire, England
which is I suppose Alverstoke Gosport
John in 1851 has another variation superannuated excise officer.
In Tower Hamlets I would be guessing they looked after bonded warehouses. Not sure if that was Customs or Excise responsibility in 1850s. Excise also had breweries, refineries, rectifiers (gin) as well as gas lighters and such taxes. When I was an Officer purchase tax which became VAT after I left. Those little gas flickers had 2/6d tax - so if a guy in the High St was selling out of a suitcase for only 2/6 he might find himself nicked.
