Hi
I am looking to find any info on Bertha Nitobe, I first found her 1931 Electoral roll. I can not find a birth, marriage or death record.
Her parents I think are Henry/Harry Nitobe and Alice King, they married 1905 Geelong....
I have found some info where Henry went to Japan 1926.
Maybe he did not returned and maybe Alice remarried....this is guess work :D

Hello there
If you found her on the 1931 roll then her birth would have been up to 1910, you had to be 21 to vote then.
Interesting will have a search about,
Harry NITOBE Married Alice WINTER in 1905 in Geelong.

the name Nitobe is very unusual....interesting no clues for a marriage or death

If you look at the National Archives site
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx
and search the records (click on Namesearch next to the photo of the person near the bottom of the page) for Nitobe you will find two references, one for Henry Nakashima NITOBE, Japanese National, b 11 April 1869, first arrival 1898, first registered St Kilda; the second for a similar name stating he left in 1926. You can oder copes of these documents by following the links.

Do you think that Bertha is the couple's daughter? going by the surname?
I cannot see a birth for her in Victoria myself.

Hello Jenn
No I am not 100% sure....the name is very unusual....I think its possible....I could not find a birth in VIC, NSW & QLD
I think perhaps she was born under another name.

Hi All,
Is it possible that Bertha Nitobe is not a daughter at all?
There seems no evidence to support that she is.
Why could she not be a sister, ex-wife or other relative?

That is possible, I have only seen her name mentioned once in the 1931 electoral roll
If I could find a birth, death or marriage I would get a cert.
