Hi there,
Could some kind person please look up in 1841 scotland census for Alexander Aitken. He was born 18 September 1808 in Falkirk, Stirling to parents Thomas Aitken and Helen Scrimgeour. He had two siblings, Henry Scrimgeour Aitken and Helen Aitken.
Many thanks
Kind regards
Jackie

Hi Jackie
Your other post from 11 April http://www.rootschat.com/links/063o/
asks for 1841 and 1851 census for Alexander, so have you now got the 1851 census for him?
In 1851 I can see an Alexander, b.1804 Falkirk, a clothier, living in Edinburgh, married to a Christina Legat Aitken - do you think this is the right one, full details if you don't already have them.

Sorry, brain going crazy at the moment with this line. I don't have 1851 for him, so will be most obliged if you could send me details. I searched for his marriage, but could not find. I will search some more to see if i can trace when and where marriage took place if she is correct wife to confirm.
Kind Regards

Thanks so much Barbara.
Could you manage to see him in 1841?

I was just waiting to see if he was the right Alexander!
I can see him in the later census, but not 1841. Have had a good look, and there is one who is a draper in Edinburgh but born Midlothian, and only 30, married to Sarah with 2 children, so don't think that can be the right man.
Nothing else seems to fit, will have another look later

Hi Barbara,
It seems so strange. When i look for marriage between Alexander and Christina, i find a marriage at St Cuthberts, Edinburgh on 21 June 1838.
I looked at the first daughter shown, Mary aged 6, which would make her birth about 1845, and could not find her birth. But,.... check this out.... Agnes Legay shown as wife's sister aged 21, i found a birth for Agnes Legat Aitken on 25 Nov 1839 St Cuthberts, Edinburgh with parents as Alexander Aitken and Christiana Legat!!! Something fishy going on, because when i worked out how old Agnes would have been in 1851, it was 12 - 21 turned around ???
Christiana would have been about 19/20 when she had Agnes.
I checked the brother in law, John Legat Jr, and he is sister to Christiana and son to parents John Legat and Agnes Legat.
What are your comments??
Regards

Hi Barbara,
John and Agnes Logar (Legat) are parents of Christina. Not sure why they would put great grandchild, if it has to be grandchild.
Thanks for the information, very helpful.

Hi Jackie,
I haven't seen the census image for that one, just the transcript (hence the spelling variations). If you look on scotlandspeople you will be able to pay to view the actual image, and may well find that it says grandchild not great-grandchild
At least you now know that Agnes was indeed Christina's sister and daughter Agnes was with relatives, so 2 different people

Hi Barbara,
Unfortuantely with me living in South africa, i do not have a subscription to Scotlands People, as it works out rather pricey with the exchange rate.
But at least we are getting somewhere. Christina's mother Agnes, was born Agnes Aitken. Interesting to see that the daughter married an Aitken. Busy seeing if there is a link in there, perhaps a cousin?? or something. Who knows. Will keep digging :)
Love
Jackie
