Title: BURTON family - Victoria
Post by: RSMACL on Monday 27 April 09 07:58 BST (UK)
Anyone have any connection with Burton family, parents George Alfred Burton b. 1828 St. Pancras, London, England, and wife Elizabeth Jane Jenner, b. 1831 Chatham, Kent, with large family of 12 children, most of whom were born near Ballarat. between 1854 and 1871.   My grandmother was Ruth Burton b. 1864 Warren Heip, married to James Pretty (b. 1855 Buriton, Hampshire, England) on  25 Dec. 1888 in Lilydale.    James owned a store in Seymour "The Melbourne Cash Trading Co." in partnership with his brother-in-law John Alfred Burton, around 1901 to 1902.  Ruth Burton died two weeks after birth of her only son in April 1901.  Store Partnership dissolved in Nov. 1902, James Pretty continued on in store now named "Railway Stores" until abt. 1907.  Then moved with his only son James Alfred Burton PRETTY to Portarlington, when he also owned a store in Newnam Street.
Brother of Ruth - Ebenezer Burton, b. 1871 owned Funeral Parlours in Lilydale, and died there in 1950. Have no details of his family - other than he had a son Geoff. whose wife was named Sadie.    Anyone help?  Ruth MacLeod (nee Pretty) in Frankston.

Thanks for your prompt reply.  That has solved some of my curly ones.
Are you related at all to the Burtons?  I wonder how George, William, etc. are connected to Ebenezer?  Your indexes for rolls indicate they were all living at same address, with same occupation - coach builder.  Can you help further?  Thanks, Ruth

Sorry, further query.  Do you have any knowledge of JOHN ALFRED BURTON (youngest brother of Ebenezer ) b. 1878 in Charlton,  and known to be in partnership in General Store in Seymour in 1901-2.  I think he died around 1943.  Ruth

Hi,
If you have not already done so, you may like to browse these pages of Lilydale and district cemeteries.

I see a few of your names there.

A bit of an annoying search site though, as no details other than location are given and even their map link is broken.

Ebenezer Burton, b. 1871 owned Funeral Parlours in Lilydale, and died there in 1950. Have no details of his family   RUTH

Dear Ruth,
Just read your messages on here.  So much information on John Alfred Burton.  But I do know he had
more than one child. Horace was first born and then a girl and another boy.  I'm sure that they died
early.  I will also be sending in the mail an update on all George Alfreds children who they married.
I did get to read and copy the letter Elizabeth Jane Jenner sent home to England.  Just great.
A real insight into early Australian living.  I loved it.  Thankyou for giving me the opportunity of viewing this,I'm absolutely thrilled to start up again in the research and actually not be stone walled.
Although I am in the process of trying to find out who Elizabeth Jane Jenners brothers and sisters were.  And the mystery that still remains.  The original Temperance Burton, her maiden name.
Can anybody help me out!!!

Regards

Carol

(Thanks, Carol for personal remarks on matters we have corresponded on.)
Does anyone know anything further about Temperance Burton b. 1812 (maiden name unknown?) and husband Thomas Burton, b.1810, St. Pancras. London, Engl. parents of Mary Ann, Eliza and George Alfred Burton?
Also has anyone any further knowledge of family of William Henry WILSON and Rhoda BURTON (a dau. of George Alfred).
After the death of his father, my father 'Burt' Pretty (age 18 yrs.) lived with his uncle William Wilson for a couple of years in Mornington, and worked in his store.
William Wilson owned "Wilson's Stores" (later called "Wilson & Livock Stores") in Main Street, Mornington, Victoria.  William's son Ernie was best man at my parent's wedding in Mornington in 1925; also another son Edward (Ted)  was a 'close' cousin to my parents for many years, and lived in Mont Albert at one time.  Anyone have any further knowledge of either of these two Wilsons?    Ruth MacLeod (nee Pretty)

Hi
I will just add for your interest, Ruth, that Parkville is where Melbourne's large Public Hospital is situated., The Royal Melbourne.  Also there is The Royal Women's and The Royal Childen's.

So sometimes when place of death says Parkville, it may mean within one of those hospitals rather than residential address.

Hi Again,
Given his place of death being Caulfield it is quite possible that EDWARD WILLIAM WILSON is at Brighton Cemetry.
Here is a link you may use to inquire.

http://www.ausbdm.org/lookup.php?st=VIC

When you are scrolling through to find the little heading for Brighton General Cemetery lookup, you will see 2 offers of lookup there.

Go for the one that is not a persons name.

PM me if you are unsure what I mean ;D

Sue, they could well have died at Rochester.  Last I heard they were living in Balwyn, in unit near their married dau. However dau. & husb. moved and I lost track of her, so perhaps the family moved to Rochester.

Hi,
I mentioned it smply because the 1936 electoral roll found them there.

If, however, you know that they were back in suburban  Melbourne after the Rochester sojourn, you will probably not find her at Rochester.

Rochester is a country town north of Melbourne and is primarily farming land.  It is more than 200 kilometers from Melbourne.

I apologise.I thought I had read the details given in the thread but must have missed the burial location of Harold Edward which Raylen noted.

Thanks Sue.  They could quite possibly have been in Rochester for some years - I remember them in later years, when they lived in unit near their only dau. in Balwyn North or East, not sure what the suburb was exactly.  This would have been in 1950-1960's or later.  Ruth

I am now also looking for only child of above Harold Edward & Esma WILSON - who was named Margaret (Peggy) WILSON, & married to KENNETH P. SMITH, in November 1951, and possibly born around 1929.  Peggy/Ken. travelled to England on honeymoon on S.S. 'Maloja' in November 1951 (on same ship as me, for company).
As mentioned previously, I know Peggy & Ken. lived in North Balwyn area in around 1960's on (?) but later sold their house and moved.  They had two or three children  from memory.   Peggy is my cousin, we were quite close when teenagers and later,  and I would love to find out more about them.  They may of course both have died by now.
Impossible to find them in WhitePages.com.au due to common surname, and not knowing where they could be living.  And telephone book doesn't help to narrow them down.
They may show up in the Electoral Rolls somewhere - grateful for any help.  Regards, Ruth MacLeod

There are some wills for this family on the Victorian PROV site, for example

George A BURTON coach builder, Lilydale, death 7 Mar 1904 - excellent list of family members, addresses etc

There are a number of other Burtons who look as though they fit your family.

Hi Ruth,
I am related to Marion Burton, daughter of George Alfred Burton and Elizabeth Jane Jenner and born in Ballarat Victoria in 1868.

My father "Ron" knew of your father "Burtie" Pretty when he joined the SECV in 1938.
My father's family tree has Roda Burton (Rhoda?) born in 1873 at Warrenheip.
According to my father, there was another daughter who was not on Cando's list. This was Dorothy "Tottie" Burton, born (date unknown) after John Alfred Burton.  "Tottie" had a daughter "Effie"...unfortunately I don't have any more details.

Hi Ruth

I don't have any Burton family links, but some of my family had business connections to Eb. and Bill Burton in Lilydale.

My grandfather initially worked at their garage on the SE corner of Main St and Deschamps Ave before taking it over, then run by my parents into the 1970's.
The funeral parlour was on the other SW corner of Deshamps, Ave. Some of the garage men would act as hearse drivers for funerals. All buildings now gone.
I know Eb. had a daughter.

My grandmother was Ruth BURTON, born 1864, daughter of George Alfred Burton and Elizabeth Jane Jenner, and an elder sister of your Rhoda BURTON.
When my father's father James Pretty died in 1819, my dad became an orphan, as his mother Ruth had died two weeks after his birth in 1901.
He first stayed with Burtons relations at Lilydale for a year, then came to Mornington, Vic. to live and work with Rhoda Burton and her husband William Henry Wilson, who had grocery and haberdashery stores in Main Street.
I have researched the Burton tree quite extensively.
