If you post his date of death, some kind individual going to the Newspaper Library in Belfast, may be able to look up his obituary in the local papers - as an Alderman he's sure to have got a write up in the Derry Journal/Sentinel and probably the Belfast papers as well (Newsletter/Telegraph/Northern Whig).

Mary Derry thats the right Man.  I have his birth cert here courtesy of Emereld Ancestors.  Eden reaghbeg your query with the Mayor will be great.  He was anAccountant & Stock Broker & House Agent with offices @9 castle Street, Derry.  His tombstone only states he was an Alderman, his date of death 1916 and his wife Annie & son Frederick (Freddy) & daughter in law Mary(May
are buried with him. There is no address on the headstone.

I will go to the Cemetry offices and see if they can re check their records  if not as you say Maryderry the council offices should have some records of his last address or even the Central library should have copies of the 1916 Derry Journal or  Sentinal recording the death

I received to day my gggGrandfathers death Certificate:William Campbell died 27/01/1865 his death certificate address is 6 Ferry Row Derry, but Derry city cemetery's records give his address as Hoggs Folly, Derry. Does any one know if Ferry row and Hoggs Folly are the same place? And also do these streets exist any more.  William was Alderman Patrick Campbells Grandfather.

Thomas was alderman Patricks Grandfather.  It is great to talk to people with local knowledge.  It is helping me to build a biggerpicture of myancestors.

bishop street would not have been to far from hoggs folly, anyone (catholic) from  those area's would have attended st.columba's church also know as the long tower church.

i don't think hoggs folly is no longer but i will find out,but bishop street still is. i myself was born in a street just off bishop street.

Wow thats brilliant thanks Mary.  I will now be able to get further info from Longtower church.  for baptisms & Marriages etc. It wil be nice to find out a little more about the women.  Pity the civil registration  marriage certs only give the fathers name.

Do you know how Bishop Street got its name ?

It's possible that "Ferrys Row" is not the name of a street but a row of houses.

So if any one could tell mewhat area this is I would be very  grateful.

Hi Summerhill,
I think we are related !  My great grandfather was also the same Patrick Campbell.  My grandfather was Leo, he also lived in Great James street before moving to Dublin his wife Olive Kitson from Burnsfoot.  My father (also Leo) and his brother are still alive & well living in Dublin.  I will be moving back to Ireland (near Derry) this year after living abroad for 20 years, so just happened to do a search on GGDad's name as I know there is a plaque dedicated to him in the town hall of Derry which I intend to visit.  Maybe I already know you ? (only if your Grandfather is also Leo) ?  I can't figure out how to send a PM on this forum..
Thanks for all the info on this site which I will enjoy sharing with the rest of the family.

Hi Coming Home & Le Camp 2,
Yes we are indeed related and doshare the same great grandparents Patrick Campbell & Annie Eliza Campbell (Nee Cummings) . Patrick & his family lived at 72 Great James'Street Derry at the time of his death in1916. My Grandfather was Jim Campbell .  He was a garda sergeant whose final posting was Wexford. I have managed to do some more research on the Campbell family and presently have gone back to 1770.  I have also done some research on the Cummings Family.  Please see my posts on the Cummings of Ballycarton which is also on page 3 or 4 of the Derry Rootschat board. I have also started to do some research on the McDermotts of Duncrun, Limavady.
I would be delighted to hear from you and once you have placed 3 posts on the rootschat board we will be able to send each other PM messages.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Summerhill,

I have been reading through your posts and I'm wondering if your family somewhere along the line links in with mine. My father's (Patrick Campbell Mc Laughlin) grandfather Patrick McLaughlin married Catherine Donnelly Campbell on the 4th Oct 1887 in Coleraine. Catherine's parents were Thomas Campbell and Jane Templeton. Some of Caterine's possible siblings are:

John Campbell, 26 Feb 1864, 0363, Aughadowey, Londonderry
Mary Jane Campbell, 06 Oct 1867, 452, Aughadowey, Derry
Charles Campbell, 01 Jul 1869, Londonderry
Thomas Edward Campbell, 03 Jun 1871, 524 Aughadowey, Derry
Grace Campbell, 13 Feb 1873
Rose Campbell, 10 Feb 1877, Macosquin, Londonderry
Bridget Campbell, 29 Jul 1878,  Macosquin, Londonderry

Did you come across any of the above in your searches, if so could you fill me in? I have found out a good bit about the McLaughlin's but not a lot on the Campbells.

Thanks

Fran

Post by: Summerhill on Wednesday 29 September 10 20:52 BST (UK)
Hello Fran,
Thanks for your reply.  I am not sure if your Campbells may be related to mine or not but I will give you what ever information I have.  Patrick was born in 34 Ferguson Street Londonderry, on the 19th April, 1872. His parents were Thomas Campbell & Margaret O'Donnell, (They  were married in 1870 in Longtower Church) in turnThomas Campbells'  parents  were William &Mary Campbell . William died in 1865 they lived in Hoggsfolly off Bishopstreet.  I know that William was born around 1807 in Muff, Co. Donegal (His parents being Joseph & Elizabeth campbell).

Back to Patrick again... his siblings were:

William born in 1871 died in 1878
Sarah born 1876 died 1898
Rose Anne born 1873
Bridget  born 1875
Margaret born 1877.

Patricks family lived in and around Bishop Street Derry.

Patrick himself married Anne Elizabeth Cummings on 19th April 1899 in St. Eugenes <Derry.

Now I note from your post that there two ancestors Rose & Bridget Campbell.  There may be a link as I do not know exactly who Thomas Campbells siblings were.

I obtained information about Thomas Campbell when I enquired in Derry City Cemetery Office about campbell burial records and they gave me information on not only THomas
but also William & who his parents were.

So as you can see I am still looking too.  I hope this has been of some help.
Kind regards,

Summerhill

Best of luck with your searches.

Hi Fran,
I simply rang Derry City cemetery Office.  I gave them as much detail as I could. I was lucky that William Campbell died in 1865 the year civil registration for Births, deaths & marriages was introduced. But you would have to be certain that your ancestors were buried in Derry City Cemetery.
As some people returned to their home parish to be buried in their family graves.

Although the staff in Derry City Cemetery office are very helpful & friendly.
regards,
Summerhill.

I have just joined and I am so appreciative to have found so much information already.

I am descended from Patrick Campbell's sister Rose Campbell who married Edward McNulty.

If you need any information I'd be glad to help and share.

I'd love to see some photos.

I know that there is also a gravestone of the William Campbell descent in the Long Tower Churchyard directly opposite the front entrance.

Best wishes,
Mary.

Hi!
I was doing a search online for Alderman Patrick Campbell's obituary from the Derry Journal and I came across this thread. So exciting. I'm an historian finishing a book manuscript about Derry from the turn of the century and Patrick Campbell is one of my favorite historical figures. Right now I am trying to compare the way the first Catholic nationalist politicians of the city (Catholics do not get representation until 1896) to those that are passing now, e.g. Bishop Daly, Paddy 'Bogside' Doherty, etc.  I'd love to exchange information (I have a fair bit on him) and would particularly appreciate the obituary if anyone has ever found it for you!
All the best,
Margo

Hi Margo,
I do have that obituary got it from one of my Derry Cousins. I will email it on to you.
I would also love what ever information you have on him as I know nothing about his political career only from the geneaological aspect.

On behalf of my daughter, I would like to thank you all for this great research. She is the great great grand daughter of Patrick. She has to do her family tree for homework and thanks to you all she has loads of information on her family.

Hello Married a Campbell,

I am a great grand daughter of Patrick.  I have photographs of Patrick, his wife Annie, and his family.  I also have information about his time on Londonderry Corporation along with his obituary from the Derry Journal.

I would be delighted to share them with you for your daughters' project. I also have the family tree done out which I am sure would be of great interest to her.

If you post two more replies, I can then message you privately with my email address.

warmest regards,

Summerhill

I received to day my gggGrandfathers death Certificate:William Campbell died 27/01/1865 his death certificate address is 6 Ferry Row Derry, but Derry city cemetery's records give his address as Hoggs Folly, Derry. Does any one know if Ferry row and Hoggs Folly are the same place? And also do these streets exist any more.  William was Alderman Patrick Campbells Grandfather.

Hi Summerhill
The street you are enquiring about Ferry Row was on /off Bishop St. According to John Bryson's book 'The Streets of Derry' . I researched further and discovered that there was a greengrocers shop on the corner owned by a man called John Ferris and this led to the street being mis-named as Ferris Row.
I have james on my tree also. His father was William Campbell married to Anne Campbell b.1809 d.25/4/1886 (O'Neill St Derry which was off Henrietta Street)
Hope this helps regards Soupie
