On a submitted LDS record:
Alice Eugénie VERPILLOT (female) born 19 JAN 1890   Les Breuleux, Bern, Switzerland married on 31 MAY 1922 at Seloncourt, Doubs, France to Célien Germain Joseph DONZE .  I am unsure if there is any connection, and I am also unsure of how to follow up, as I usually suspect submitted records.

On a ge*ggle search online I have spotted:

Verpillot: Marcel Antonin, born 14 January 1921 at Seloncourt Doubs France, died on 10 February 1945 in Buchenwald (Germany);

I think perhaps that may indicate that Marcel Verpillot may have died in a Concentration Camp in Germany.   I have no way of figuring out if Marcel was perhaps a nephew to Aime Verpillot who fell at Fromelles 19 July 1916.

This Lad, applied for and was granted "British Subject" status (ie the equivalent of Australian Citizenship that only came into force after WW2) so that he could ENLIST.

His naturalisation papers show his dated of birth as 12 May 1891 and place of birth as La Jonchise (my poor transcibing only) in the Swiss Canton of  Neuchatel.  He had been in NSW for 2 years and 11 months.  His approval for citizenship came through in mid September 1915, days after his enlistment.

Just to alert you to his occupation.  One database has it as watch maker, another has it as scroll maker, and on his naturalisation papers in his own handwriting it states "Gate Maker", which I think is perhaps a reliable source.  Perhaps that indicates he was a metal worker.

He states in those papers that he arrived in Sydney from New Zealand on 17 September 1912. He was not married, and his application was supported by  William David Sheerwood, who knew him.   William Sheerwood was a Sergeant of Police, stationed at No. 4 Police Station, and attested that Aime was "known to me, and is a person of good repute"

A Police Magistrate was required to administer the Oath of Allegiance , and on that certificate it notes that Aime Constant Verpillot's occupation was GATEMAKER.

We have tried to read the name of the ship that brought him to Sydney from New Zealand, please help, as we do not recognise the name.

ADDED, we hope we are not  breaching any copyright rules, this image is a snip from the following link http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/imagine.asp?B=34229&I=1&SE=1

It seems that it was only a co-incidence, but

That ship that brought Aime to Sydney was also to take troops from NZ to Europe in WW1.

Probably because the ship was still a liner carrying passengers in 1912 until war broke out and she was requisitioned by the New Zealand Government  and she was then converted to carry troops

His enlistment papers show his trade was scroll maker.  This would also reflect in his NSW occupation as Gate Maker,  the wrought iron scolls and fancy iron gates were all made individually by tradesmen.

Those enlistment papers also show he served an apprenticeship at Coventry, England, with Herberts Tool Manufacturers.  This seems to indicate the famous firm founded at Coventry by Sir Alfred Herbert who died in 1957.  Perhaps someone at rootschat will be visiting the museum that Sir Alfred established and be able to enquire further on Aime's apprenticeship, or other details.  We understand that apprenticeship bonds would have included family forebears information.

Just checked the NZ records.

It appears that Arthur Norman MOREY was the one who died in 1955 and I've located the death for Berthe Marie MOREY in 1969, aged 74 (making her birth about 1895).

Perhaps they have been buried together and that's where the confusion in dates has occured.

Nevertheless, it's a fair bet that Berthe is most likely Aime's sister and the daughter of Charles and Berthe.   This MOREY link needs further examination.

Cheers,
Tim L.

They are both listed on Archways:

Berthe:

Arthur:

There is also a file for WW1 for Arthur as well.

Maybe need to chase up death notices for them.

Re Arthur Morey's date of death,

I think this would be 29 June 1955, just done an elimination search adjusting dates for that 1955/23583 reference on line.

Presume I cannot do same for Berthe, as the 50 year rule would apply.

I think Berthe Verpillot's marriage to Arthur Morey would be 22 Feb 1916 (1916/10960)

Have not noticed any children for Berthe.

Hope that helps you both Tim and KHP.

Have finally discovered the record of the family travelling from England to NZ.   It seems the spelling of their surname was either originally recorded incorrectly or the transcription was wrong.   Either way they travelled to NZ in 1908 and the surname was VERPELLOB.

Chas VERPELLOB (Charles Eugene - Father)
Bertha VERPELLOB (Berthe - Mother)
Anni VERPELLOB (Aime - Son)
Unknown VERPELLOB (recorded as female - Daughter)

This would almost certainly suggest that the unknown female is Aime's sister and most probably the Berthe who married Arthur Norman Morey.

Cheers,
Tim L.

Great news!!

A friend of mine in NZ made some enquiries and calls and we have now confirmed that Berte Morey (nee' Verpillot) was indeed the sister of Aime'.

Further to that Berthe's daughter is still alive and living in NZ and we have spoken with her.   She has more documents about him and his death plaque.

Thanks to everyone on this thread (and the other threads) for your wonderful input that has lead to solving this one.   Both Sandra and I considered Aime' as being possibly the most difficult to track down and to have a successful outcome is a great bonus for our research.

This thread can now be marked as 'absolutely' completed.  ;D

Cheers,
Tim L.

Ohh Excellent news!

I honestly thought this one would be one of the hardest to sort out due to the family moving around previously.

Lets hope we get such positive news on a lot of the others, its time they were 're-united' with their families even if only on paper.

Hi tharkin56,

Re your Rev Gawthorp - at replies 6 & 7 of this thread we have established that Aime Constant Verpillot arrived in Australia on 17 September 1912 from New Zealand per the SS Maunganui.   EDIT TO ADD disembarking at Sydney

But if your question relates to the emigration from England to NZ, then the year for that event would be 1908.  Sorry, we don't seem to have included the exact dates for that voyage or name of that ship.  If you can help with those details, please share.

Flintshire County Herald 22nd November 1929

LEST WE FORGET: They died that we might live

Sleep, brave warriors, in your bed of clay
Until Reveille sounds, on that Great Day,
When we shall meet again to part no more
With our Heavenly Father on that golden shore.

Eleven years have passed, yet still we don’t forget
To honour you, who helped to pay that debt
Of Sacrifice, so that we all should live
Unfettered, free, what more, then, could you give?

Fear not, your names will never be forgot,
Nor deeds of valour on some foreign spot,
You gave your life, your all, without regret,
God bless you, lads! We shan’t forget;

When duty called, you gave up home and love
To serve your King and Country and your King above,
You nobly did your duty, while others calmly slept,
You gave your all we don’t forget.

Tis well perhaps you died, not lived to see
Your comrades, some in dire poverty;
For work and promises they ended all in smoke,
And now they’re homeless, destitute, and broke.

Twas not for this you fought and nobly died,
And when in danger oft your foes defied;
The honour of your flag you bravely kept
You did your duty we must not forget.

Sleep on, old comrades, you are safe at last,
All your troubles over, and your dangers past;
Again we hope that some day we may meet you yet,
Farewell, dear comrades God does not forget.

I'm doing this project with him. We had to find a soldier killed in the Battle of Fromelles, and there were certain parameters we had to meet. Private Aime Constant Verpillot met them all. We chose a few others, and did a quick search on all of them, and it came up with this site on Verpillot, so we stuck with him. This one site has given us a plethora of useful information, most of the details we need. Were just lacking in images.

It's a year wide project, and was started last year. Some of the videos made were presented at the Memorial Service. There is a website dedicated to this: http://smcchistory.ning.com/
It's basically a collection of information. It has information on some of the soldiers, and videos on a few of those.

I assume that you are looking at the letters you mentioned before.  Cross check and see if they are in the same unit or if there is any other similar information.

I will see what I can find on the others for you ...

can you go back and get the original document that you were looking at and give me the reference so that I can see what I can find on these other lads for you.

This is all i have to work off, from the 2nd post on this topic:

Statement, 4828 Pte A. McKELL, B Company, 53rd Bn, 30 December 1918: '[He was] Of B. Coy. on 19th July at Fleurbaix during general action, was killed by bullet, don't know where hit. I saw his body on the field, in No Man's Land, close to L/Cpl. E.A. Hubbard, and J. LARKIN. We were taken P/W next day.'

I can probably find McKell, as 4828 might be his number...

There are only 2 A McKell's listed.

One was under an alias:

The other was in the 7th Light Horse on discharge.

I posted McKell's service file link for you ... check and see if the number is the same.

When searching the NAA if you type in the surname and the service number it will return the man's service file for you.

If you are just search the surname then use the date range 1914 - 1920.  Many soldiers came back 1920 and sometimes there files are outside of the war date parameters.

Sabat ... sometimes there were posted as missing believed taken POW ... later this may have been upgraded to wounded and missing ... later still it could have been upgraded again ... I will check the service file for you and get back to you. What is it that you are after about McKell?

There is only one L Larkin.  He did not die in the war but came back to Australia.  His name was Leslie Larkin 6284

you mean all those larkins died at fromelle. in reference to one of the larkins, 2958   Larkin, John James   40 Garner's Avenue, Marrickville, New South Wales   1st Pioneer Battalion, 6th Reinforcement, found another one, probably related. lived at 60 Garner's avenue.

ill cross reference your list with those who died at fromelles, then choose one.

Sabet, you are spot on, Fedelmar is brilliant.   I too would be delighted to see your finished report.  I think of Aime Constant Verpillot quite often, for he was born in Switzerland, of French origins, apprenticed in Coventry, England, migrated with his family to New Zealand and then lived at Bondi, NSW before enlisting.  Discovered he needed to give up his birthright to become a British Subject, to complete his enlistment.  And then he fell at Fromelles.

Your school project is helping to ensure that all THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOREVER MORE.

Lest We Forget.

Title: Re: Fromelles Missing - Aime Constant Verpillot COMPLETED with Thanks
Post by: Sabet on Wednesday 07 September 11 09:08 BST (UK)
Private Aime Constant Verpillot was born on May 12th, 1891, in La Jonchise, Neuchatel, Switzerland. His family were of French descendant and travelled first to England before going to New Zealand, from which he travelled to Australia.

He arrived in Sydney on the 17th of September, 1912, at the age of 20. His application for citizenship was granted in mid-September, 1915. He lived at 15 Barracluff Avenue, Bondi, and listed his job as a scroll, or gate maker. He was educated at a public school in Switzerland and a Grammar School in Coventry, England. He never married, but lived with his parents, Charles Eugene and Berthe. He was described as 5’ 9 1/2” and having brown hair, a fair complexion, light brown eyes and called himself a Methodist.

He was enlisted into the 1st Battalion, 15th reinforcement, on the 6th of September, 1915, at Warwick Farm, NSW. He embarked for the war on the 8th of March, 1916, aboard HMAT A15 ‘Star of England’. He trained at both Egypt and the Western Front before being taken on by the 53rd Battalion at Tel el Kebir on the 10th of April, 1916. Show ‘Royal George’ He embarked at Alexandria aboard the ‘Royal George’ to join the British Expeditionary Force on the 19th of June, 1916, and disembarked at Marseilles, France, on the 28th of June.

He was reported missing in action on 19th of July, 1916. A year later, his identification disk was received from the Germans, with no other messages other than that the soldier was deceased, and declared killed in action on that fateful day, on the 24th of February, 1917. Multiple enquires were put into finding the location of the grave of Aime, but none ever succeeded. On the 8th of August, 1920, a statement was issued declaring that it was no longer possible to locate his final resting place.

A statement by one of the other soldiers, a Private Arthur McKell, of his battalion was issued on the 30th of December 1918. “[He was] Of B. Company. On 19th of July at Fleurbaix during general action, was killed by bullet, don’t know where hit. I saw his body on the field, in No Man’s Land, close to Lance Corporal E.A. [Edward Arthur] Hubbard, and J. [John] Larkin. We were taken Prisoners of War next day.”

Private Aime Constant Verpillot received 2 medals throughout his military career, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. He received the British War Medal, on the 25th of November, 1921, to signify his service in WW1, and the Victory Medal on the 29th of the same month because the Allies were victorious. Aime Constant Verpillot served on the front line for only 23 days.

Aime Constant Verpillot signed the Secretary to Department of External Affair's receipt for his Certificate of Naturalisation on 15 Sept 1915.   He had arrived in Australia 17 September 1912.   Today is only the 13th of September, many decades later.

I agree with fedelmar, things happen for a reason ....  It is best to make sure your efforts conform to the requirements of your school's assignment.

Us here at RChat following your efforts are simply so delighted that you both are undertaking this project.  Our life experiences have taught us the virtue of patience, and you have the full support of us all.

EDIT TO ADD, Apologies to "Us All", I have expressed my own view without first consulting with "All of Us".

Cheers,
Tim L.

Today is the tenth anniversary, it is 12 May 2019.  It is Mother's Day in New South Wales.  His date of birth is recorded as 12 May 1891.
