Hi,
I wonder if someone could tell me if a place called Barrington ever existed in Northumber land?
I am researching a friends tree and on the 1911 Census the birthplace is clearly listed as Barrington, Northumberland, but I can't find it on any map.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Yes, it was in Bedlington Parish http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/Gazetteer/NBL_B.html

This is the closest I can get:
go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm
Search postcode NE22 7DL.
When the map loads, go to the drop-down menu and select any of the old maps and they will show you Barrington Colliery.
(You will need zoom out a bit using the - button at the bottom of the page.)

As is typical with trying to locate a place named after a pit/mine colliery, there are sometimes complications.
Barrington Colliery consisted of at least three pits/shafts. The Hannah Pit ( sunk 1854), the Henry Pit and the Molly Pit.
The Hannah Pit, a "green field" site, and the community that grew up around it, lay just south of Stakeford, just south of the River Wansbeck.
The Henry Pit and the Molly Pit lay just south west of the community of West Sleekburn.
The Durham Mining Museum web site www.dmm.org.uk , in the Barrington Colliery section, has helpful map showing both Barringtons, sandwiching Bomarsund and West Sleekburn, on a Ordnance Survey map ( 1860 edition)
In today's terms this would be in line with the modern-day road A1147.
Trivia Bit. The pub, the Lord Barrington exists today in Stakeford ( or is that corner in Bomarsund ? )

I had the same issue, but it turned out that the word was not as 'clear' as it had appeared initially. It was actually meant to be Bavington, which is in the parish of Kirkwhelpington.
