Title: Please help...Electoral Registers 1923 ?
Post by: Heb66 on Saturday 30 May 09 16:50 BST (UK)
Hi Rootschatters,

I have an address of 3, St Georges Mansions, Rink Street, Port Elizabeth, between the years 1920-1930.

Persons listed as living at the above was Miss Davis and possibly married sister surname Bennet.

Trying desperatly to research their christian names to be able to progress forward

Does South Africa hold such listings as electoral registers?

Any help or advice would be most greatfully received.

Helen ....U.K.

Hi Helen
Just seen your post.  Not sure but I think all electoral rolls/registers prior to 1994 were destroyed.  I'm open to correction here, there may be someone who can verify one way or the other.

Hi again
Just had another thought - I wonder if street or trade directories would help.  Port Elizabeth main library have a big collection - but - unfortunately the library is closed at present, I don't know for how long.  I do know someone who was in charge of the Afrikaaner section for many years and kept wonderful rcords.  I will ask her if the names mean anything to her and get back to you.

You are a star, I'd almost given up hope, and put my research on hold.

Many thanks for your time spent.

        Helen.

Hi Helen
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you.  Not good news I"m afraid.

The library do not hold any electoral rolls.

Street/trade directories only for 1922, 1928 and 1929 no Davis or Bennet listed at 3 St George's Mansions Rink Street.

Only Davis anywhere near was in 1922, a B Davis at 74 Park Drive.   Park Drive is around the corner from Rink Street.

Sorry I could not be of more help

Regards
