Title: HOCKINS in 1871
Post by: Robin G on Wednesday 03 June 09 10:33 BST (UK)
Hi

I have found Elizabeth Susan Mary HOCKINS, born in 1869 at Devonport, staying with her grandmother, Elizabeth HOCKINS, during the 1881 census for Stoke Damerel, Devon.  I'm hoping that she is staying with her parents in the 1871.  I would be very grateful for details of her parents and any siblings if she is.

Regards

Robin

Hi Trish

Thanks for going the extra mile.  I had just found the marriage details and was looking, unsuccessfully, for Susan's birth.  I can only find a Susan Ellen BLIGHT with the right age and place of birth.

You and your colleagues have been very helpful.  Thank you!

Regards

How sad, they both died young.
Maybe there is a London connection?

Hi Trish

Thanks for your kind offer.  I suspect I will have to order a certificate and then maybe come back to you.  Regarding my Moorman/Blight query did you notice the Visitors in the 1871 Census entry?

Thanks again.

Yes, very interesting.

Do you know more than you are telling ;)

I think Elizabeths maiden name was CHAPMAN as there is a marriage to Charles in 1834 on IGI, also a death for Charles Hockins March 1851, Stoke. This would mean Elizabeth was just made a widow before 1851 Census.

The visitors could be;
Kate Moorman- Susans sister, the others as all from Cornwall, Susans grandma and Mother remarried or aunt???

Trish

EDIT I have found none of them 1841 Census ::)

Hi Trish

I dug deeper into the Free BMD site and searched for MOORMAN/BLIGHT marriages.  It came up with James Benetto MOORMAN and Susan BLIGHT married Mar 1855 Falmouth.  They appear to have had at least three children:
Susan Ellen BLIGHT Jun 1854 Falmouth (adopted or natural?)
James Bennetto MOORMAN Dec 1857 St. Columb
Kate MOORMAN Mar 1859 Falmouth

For confirmation, if you get a chance please see if this family is in the 1861 Census.

Thanks again.

Regards

Robin

Will look for Census later tonight.

Hi Trish

That's very generous of you.  I would be pleased to have the parents and siblings of Susan BLIGHT born 1831 Falmouth if you can spare the time next week.  I'm worried that I'm pushing my luck so please don't go to too much trouble.  Have a nice weekend>

I have pm'ed you the 1851 Census.

Susan Blight 1831 is living with Mother Mary and has 3wk old Susan with them.

Susans sisters marriage;

Mary BLIGHT
Michael DOWLING
March 1851
Falmouth
9 115

From the 1851 Census checked for Baptisms of children;
parents are HENRY and MARY

Catherine,Susan,Richard,Robert,Emma all born Falmouth

So the Susan Ellen BLIGHT birth 1854,Falmouth seems the right one ;D

As Catherine is baptised Catherine Pascoe BLIGHT looked for marriage;

Henry BLIGHT
Mary PASCOE
25 September 1827, Falmouth, Cornwall (extracted)

The only thing is I have no idea where Henry is on all censuses he never appears with Mary. Maybe he always worked away from home ??? until he died.

Will post other census data another time.

Cheers,
Trish

Hi Trish

Well done!  Great detective work with the Pascoe name.  I wonder if Henry was a miner working night shifts and therefore counted at the mine rather than at home.  Anyway you have really gone the extra mile for me so please have a break now.

Thank you very much for your generosity in sharing your time and resources.  If ever you need help with South African research I will do my very best to assist you.

Regards

Hi Robyn,

Thank you , I really enjoyed doing it :)

I could do with some help in Sth Africa, but really have no idea what is available there.
My g/g/grandfather was a Captain and apparently the family was in Sth Africa abt. 1852-1864.
