Title: Help please on Fannie Frances GREGSON
Post by: Anderson on Friday 05 June 09 13:22 BST (UK)
What I have:
Fannie was born 1 Jan 1857 County Armaugh. Father was Thomas GREGSON born abt 1816 & mother Mary Ann McGOWAN.
Fannie left Ireland sometime before July 1877 as she married Joseph samuel BOYCE in New Zealand on the 5 July 1877. They had 2 children in NZ and the 3rd in NSW. Would like to find out what I do to find out more about the Irish part of Fannie's family.
Appreciate any help

Thomas Gregson was from the Co. Down Gregsons from
Edenballycoghill.  His marriage was August 31, 1850 at the Magheralin Parish Church.

William Gregson married Ruth Hardgrove was from the same church but perhaps  living in Maralin ("this") with a Thomas born 1815 .  I don't know where the dates for your Thomas  came from, so I don't know if there is a possibility of a connection.   There are other Gregsons from the Magheralin area.

There was a reference to a Uriah married to Ellen and dying in 1868 at the age of 60.  Mill Hill was their location.  Do you know where that could be? It is an unusual name and it showing up twice in a Gregston family was of interest.

Mary Ann's father was Samuel and a William Magowan was living in Edenballycoggill.  I did not check PRONI tax records to see who else might be there.    I have Armagh Magowans and would be interested in a connection.

I never found Fanny.  Did the whole family move to NZ?  Are the Boyces from the Ballydougan Boyces?

The information we have was done by a living family member. So ?. What we have on the GREGSON side is:
Thomas GREGSON (b: abt 1816 where?)father William GREGSON mother ?)
Thomas mar. 1st wife Mary Ann McGOWAN on the 30 Aug 1850 in the Par. Ch. Magheralin Nth Ireland & children:
John b: 12 May 1851 Co Down Par. Magheralin.
William b: 11 Apr 1852    as above.
Robert b: 18 Dec 1853          "
Robert b: 25 Jan 1855   (don't know)
Fannie Frances (Femiah) b: 1 Jan 1857 County Armagh.

Mary Ann may have died at this time as Thomas married Sarah TURTLE on the 16 Apr 1858 at Ch of Ireland, Ballinderry, Co Antrim, Nth Ireland & they had a further 5 children:
Sarah Anne  22 Mar 1859 Edemballcoggol, Par of Magheralin, Co Down

William 27 Sep 1862
Thomas Edward 9 Nov 1864 Moira, Edemballcoggol, Par of  Co Down

The names of Rankin & the place in NZ you mentioned in the last post doesn't ring any bells.

Hi folks,

Kat - you mentioned Mill Hill and  where is it?   It is in Waringstown. There are still Gregsons in that Vicinity today .  E'coghill - If you google images for here you should come up with a fine example of a thatched farmhouse. It has been what I would call lovingly restored. It is still in the possession of Gregsons today. I have a photo of it but it is on my old pc but I pass it regularly so can take another for you both.  I will have to read your posts again as you mentioned two other names ..Turtle and Magowan.  Where were the magowans from?? I do know of a man magowan originally from Waringstown who has a nice photo of his old house(over 300 years old) from before it was renovated. Also if I recall what my Aunt told me there were people by the name of Turtle who were neighbours of my Granny when she was a child living on the Mill Hill.  Sorry to ramble on...perhaps I should have sent you both a pm instead!!

If you check out this web addy it shows two pictures which should be of interest.  It shows you the house in E'coghill. This must have been taken before it was restored. It looks fantastic now.  And also the painting by Hugh Frazer is taken at the Waringstown end of the Mill Hill perhaps fromapprox where the Presbyterian church is sited. One of the cottages on the left is where my Grandmother grew up as a child. Although the painting was approx 40 years prior to her being born.

If you check out this map of Waringstown it will show you the road called the Mill Hill.  The thatched farmhouse  in E'Coghill is on the Dromore Road -at the T juction with the Mill hill.

I hope this helps,

I cannot be sure but I think Fannie Frances Magowan may be a sister of my   Gt Grandfather John Magowan b.1838 whom I believe came from the townland of Ballymacateer near Dollingstown, Lurgan. His parents were Samuel Magowan and Frania Magowan. Death register in Magheralin C.O.I. shows them as being dissenters. The family were Presbyterians and most of them were married in Moira Presbyterian Church.
He had a Brother Robert b.1859 and sisters Susanna b. 1841  and Elizabeth b.?. I suspect there were other siblings
My Gt Grandfather after his marriage appeared to move to Corcreeny near Waringstown.
Susanna married Ford/e and their first child b. 1860 was called Farvnia. I think she was called after her Grandmother but with writing/spelling not the best then (as now!) she ended up Farvnia.
If you send me your e mail  I will be happy to correspond.

I would love to ask about your family as I have Magowans and Gregstons.  Separating them will be a mess.  I've tried once, but church records peter out in 1775 and things are pretty vague in what is recorded.  I lose most of Samuel b. bef 1733's children at that point.  I should refresh before I talk with you.  I did find your tree, but it is often things not said on the tree which help.

My Magowans seem to be the folks in Moyraverty by 1810 and in Lurgan First Presbyterian church.  I noticed Magowans in Corcreany, but as mine married  into family in Bleary and Corcreany, I thought my McGowans moved into family homes.  I could not make connections, though. One married a Ward in BLeary and another a Bleary McCleary.

My Gregstons go back to Edward b. bef 1800 and Mary in Drumgor at Seagoe Parish church.

Let me try to unravel the tree again.
Sincerely,
Kat

Best including where and when so people can assess how relevant your info is. Note, you are replying to a 15-16 year old post.

That is a very valid point i do apologise for not being more informative.
My family appear to be from Moyraverty before moving to Dromore and Antrim.
There is a connection to Banbridge Road Presbyterian Church where my great great grandfather Joshua Magowan was ordained an elder and was appointed clerk.
