Title: PHILLIPS, *Completed! Thanks to Everyone who helped*.
Post by: Romilly on Saturday 13 June 09 16:24 BST (UK)
Is it just me, - or are other people finding the 1911 Census for Glamorgan difficult to use?

I have wasted lots of credits downloading household transcripts which have turned out to be wrong:-( Partly I think this is due to some of the names being fairly common at that time...

I am however, completely stuck on this one. (I am not asking for a free look-up, - merely some searching advice).

I have James Phillips, born Pembroke 1864, married to Sarah Ann Rees, born Morriston 1864 on the 1891 and 1901 Censuses for Glamorgan, living in Brynforgan Terrace, Morriston. They have sons, Evan Rees Phillips, born 1888 and David Phillips born 1900. James Phillips is employed in the Tinworks.

I am unable to locate any of them on the 1911 Census for Glamorgan:-( Although Sarah Ann's parents, Evan and Margaret Rees are still in Brynforgan Terrace in 1911.

Any help welcomed!
Cheers, Romilly.

Was his name Thomas James Phillips? There is someone of that name coming up for Swansea, with a David included; DOB is 2 years out so it depends whether you want to "waste" some credits checking.  ???

I've found all the ones I've looked for so far, but I'm lucky in that they didn't move around much.

Good luck.

Hi Bev,

And Many Thanks for looking!

Ages seem to move about on the Censuses,  ::) I have him down as 1864/5, (he's 27 on the 1891 Census for Glamorgan) but its worth a look at the one that you mention. Do you have a Ref, or were you looking under 'Phillips'?

Cheers, Romilly.

I put in James Phillips, with David in "other members of household."

I don't know whether it is him and it's quite pricey to find out! Great if you come up trumps, but ****** frustrating if he's the wrong one.

I bit the bullet yesterday and spent some money, but the more I find the more I want to find and it's going to be blooming expensive!

I'd agree with the frustrating bit!! (I've just blown more credits for the wrong Phillips's:-(

I'll have one last look... 8)

Oh dear, - it was another wrong 'un! :'(

This one is mistranscribed as a 'Steal Worker' :) His wife has an unusual name, - Typhonia Phillips! (If anyone is looking for her, let me know, -& I will gladly pass it on).

You have to laugh... :'( :'(

Are there any more children born after 1900? Did anyone die before 1911 census ?

Have read the above - my apologies, did'nt realise it included search results thought you couldn't post the original transcripts. Thanks for clarification and info.  :)

Could they have moved to a different area in Glamorgan or maybe the family visiting friends of living with other family members   :-\

Have you checked the 1911 emurators book pages under list where Sarah's parents were living to see if any Phillips were living in that road. I did'nt realise at the time that my gg/f and g/f where listed on the same page but not living together in the same house.
Good luck with your search  :)

Hello Ladyhawk,

Many Thanks for looking for my PHILLIPS family. In a process of elimination, I downloaded all of the James Phillips's that I (and you) found in Swansea...but none of them seemed to be the right ones:-(
I also found some in Cardiff, - but alas, not them ::)

I'm not sure exactly how to check the enumerator's pages for Clydach Road, - but will have a go!

Sadly I have no knowledge of what became of James and Sarah Ann Phillips, (née Rees) and family, but I do have a rather blurred old photo; which I think she might be in. My late Grandmother, Margaret Wilson (née Rees) is the lady in the hat in the middle, & I think that Sarah Ann Phillips is either the one sitting next to her, or the one at the back on the right(?) I think that it must have been taken in about 1930 or thereabouts.

I won't give up though...but will carry on looking.

Cheers, Romilly.

It also cost me a fortune ,I emailed 1911 census people to ask where my grandparents were and a few days later they appeared ,it was as though they were in a pending tray , so keep looking ,maybe the same will happen to you.

Hi Romilly,

If you have the original 1911 census transcript not just transcript for Sarah's parents Evan & Margaret Rees.

Log into 1911 census go to 'my account' you will see a list of everything you have looked at.

Go to Evan REES press view then under the Enumerators Book Pages you have headings
List, Cover, District Details and so on.

Click the heading List and it gives you address, kind of building, name of occupier you may get lucky and find the phillips living in same street/road.

As the photo is 1930 Sarah Ann Phillips not deceased in 1911.
Could they have gone back to James family and birthplace Pembroke  :-\

Hi Ladyhawk,

I did as you suggested...& found that there is an entry for REES at No 3 Clydach Road, Ynysforgan & an entry for PHILLIPS at No 5 Clydach Road!! (This entry shows 3 males at the address, no females). A quick trawl through the Death Entries for a Sarah Ann Phillips shows one in Swansea in the first Quarter of 1909...& so perhaps I am wrong about her being in that photo ??? Perhaps it is Selina and Elizabeth Rees instead...?)

HOWEVER...when I put this address in the 'Place Search' facility, it came up with 2 entries, both for '3 Tyrcanol Row', Morriston, Nr Swansea. When I downloaded the transcript...it has a John Davies & his wife & their adopted daughter :o

No Phillips's...:-(

It is very confusing...I'm obviously doing something wrong ::) What happened to the entry for 3 Clydach Road?

Romilly, sorry you're not having much luck, was really hoping you would find them living in the same street ::)

You say the photo maybe of Sarah Ann's sister Selina have you seen the marriage entry for Selina Rees there's a postem added that reads "My Grandmother, Margaret Rees, (1867-1934) was Selina Rees's sister.I am currently researching this side of my family, and would be interested to hear from other Rees relatives." The entry is on FreeBMD Dec 1901

Doesn't appear to say how you get in contact though - maybe of some help  :)

Hello Ladyhawk,

I've emailed the FindmyPast people about this now, - so fingers crossed they'll be able to tell me where I'm going wrong...

Sadly, the BMD message quoted above was placed by me! (I think it was in 2001 though:-)

The 1911 Census showed Selina Rees still single & still living at home with her parents in Brynforgan Terrace; which I now think was in Clydach Road. I spent years looking for a marriage for Selina, but I now think that she probably never married.

Despite years of looking, I've had very little success with the Rees side of my family:-(
It would be amazing to hear from someone else who is looking at the same bunch...but realistically...I doubt this will ever happen. Perhaps I should just give up :-\

Best Wishes, Romilly.

Hi Romilly,

It's like fatbuster said, you have to keep trying. I knew the address of my grandparents in 1911, but the street they lived on, and several of the surrounding streets were not appearing through the search function. I email findmypast and all they suggested was that I was using the search facility incorrectly.

I gave up, but checked again about 2 weeks ago and now all the missing streets are there including my grandparents.

Hi Ridgehill,

Its good to know that its not just me having difficulties with the 1911!

I've had an email back form the FindmyPast peeps now, saying that they are also unable to find my Phillips relatives on the 1911 Census...& so I shall probably never find out where they were then ::)
They've also looked at the Phillips listed for Clydach Road, (on the Enumerator's page) & its for a Jabez Phillips & two lodgers...& so no link to the ones that I'm looking for.

On checking the 1901 Census for Wales again, I see that James and Sarah Ann Phillips were living at 27 Llangyfelach Road then, (with children, David 11yrs, William George 9yrs, and John 6yrs). Evan Rees Phillips, 13yrs was staying with his Grandparents. And so I wasted yet more credits checking that address, but they're not there:-(

If anyone else on here is looking for Phillips's in Swansea on the 1911, - let me know, - because theres a good chance that I've got the transcript for them!! ;)

Have you looked again recently?  Do you remember I was also having difficulty (!!!) finding my Ford's and Matthews families,  you looked for me too and I had spent days, wasted credits etc on wrong families,  well I just today decided to have another look and I found both families instantly!
Maybe they've updated something or other? What a result! *** so my fingers are crossed for you too.  ***

Hi Newbie,

Really pleased for you that you've found both of yours!! :) :)

Annoying though...when you think of how many credits we have wasted opening ones that turned out to be wrong:-(

I've gone through all of mine again...& STILL can't find any of my Phillips's ::) ::) ::)

Perhaps they're just adding things in dribs & drabs...?? (Just to keep us buying more credits).

Hi Romilly,

It does make you wonder, especially as you know they are alive and should be on there, if the search does not appear to work correctly you should at least be offered some free credits  :-\

I don't want you to spend anymore credits but have you tried residence Neath.
start with just James' name then add each other family members name - could this be them  :-\!!!!

Tried starting with Sarah Ann added James then nothing when you add other names  :-[

Would they check it out for you if you feel this maybe your family as you've bought so many credits  ::)

Hope you find them soon - good luck  :)

Hi Ladyhawk,

And Many Thanks for looking again for me :).

I put in 'James Phillips' & 'Neath' and got 5 hits...adding 'William George Phillips' reduced it to 1...& so I bit the bullet...& paid for the transcript, - but it wasn't them:-(

I must admit to having brought yet more credits last week, - but once they're gone...I shall give up!!

It does seem terribly unequable that the Irish 1911 is free to view... ???

Best Wishes, Romilly.

Hi Romilly,
:'(  oh I'm so sorry, I hope I didn't send you off on a "wild goose chase".
I just can't understand it, we both looked for mine before when Glamorgan came on line (thanks for helping me  :) )
and none of mine were there but yesterday I just thought blow it I'll have one more try, like you I wasted credits on families I thought might be them!  but they just popped up, I entered only the surname and the birth place and there they all were, worked for both families!
But now I have to go spend some of those credits.  I just wish they would put it on subscription.
good luck,

Post by: Romilly on Tuesday 28 July 09 16:33 BST (UK)

Hi All,

After downloading another couple of wrong 'uns...I phoned the 1911 Helpline at FindMyPast.

And they said...

that there were lots of Census pages that were too badly damaged to be scanned!! (I had thought that this had just happened to some of central Cardiff, - but no, its all over the place apparantly:-(

And so it could be that this is what happened with the entry for my Great Uncle & Aunt, James and Sarah Ann Phillips, & children, Evan Rees, David, William George and John.

What is so annoying with this...is that I could have just continued to purchase more credits...& continued wasting them...because I thought that the problem lay with my searching abilities, - rather than with the 1911 Census Transcriptions ::) ::)

The only thing that the Helpline could advise, is to try & find a Death Entry for James or Sarah Ann Phillips, purchase the Cert, & then do an address search on the 1911. And so perhaps I'll try that path... :(

Romilly :(

Hrrrmmmmm,   aaaaggghhhhh....that is so frustrating, I expect somewhere on the 1911 site there is that information about missing pages ?
still a bit bemused as to why mine weren't there and then they turn up later!
maybe you could try the national archives direct, is there a film available to view of all the pages, including those that are "unreadable" ?

According to the FindmyPast people, the 1911 will not be available to view at Kew untill 2011!! (Because of the 100yr Rule) And so if I enquired at Kew, - they would just refer me back to BrightSolid, - who seem to have a blanket monopoly on the 1911 ::) ::) ::)

Aaaaaaarrrrgggghhhh... ???

I've had a wade through the 1911 Site again, but I can't find anything specific about damage to Swansea/Morriston pages.

Further to my last Post,

I have checked with The National Archives at Kew, & contrary to what I was told when I phoned 'Find my Past', the 1911 Census is free to view there! (The only bit that is missing is the column relating to infirmities; which will be available in 2011). It is also free to view at The National Library of Wales.

I've also heard back from The West Glamorgan Archives, re: missing parts of the Census. (See below).

'I’ve been looking to see about whether there’s anything missing from the 1911 Census.  The National Archives website claims that there’s only one volume missing from the whole census, but doesn’t say what it is.  However, on the actual 1911 site, it says that all of the household schedules have survived and that some of the enumerators books are missing, which wouldn’t affect a people search of the census, but apparently does affect a place search, as info such as civil parish was taken from the enumerator’s books.  But according to the list on their website, none of the affected areas are in Wales, so in theory, there should be no problem for anyone doing a search for a person in Wales because of missing returns'.

My query re: Missing Phillips family has now been resolved!

A kind person has found Sarah Ann, with David and William Phillips, on the outgoing Passenger Lists from Liverpool to New York City, USA in 1907!!

I assume that James Phillips must have died prior to this date.

They were going to join Sarah Ann's sister, Elizabeth Rees in New Jersey, USA.

This explains why I was unable to find them on the 1911 Census for Wales ;D ;D ;D

Many Thanks to everyone who tried to help with this query,

Hi Newbie,

The silly thing is...that I knew that some of my Grandmother's family had gone to the USA, but I was assuming that it would have been one of her unmarried sisters. To that end, I have spent ages wading through Marriage Entries for either Selina or Elizabeth Rees...

I just hadn't envisaged Sarah Ann Phillips going to the USA, as she was married with four sons. However, it appears that after her husband James died at the age of 42, she decided to go & join her sister Elizabeth Rees in New York. I've searched in vain for Elizabeth Rees, (born Morriston 1872) on the Passenger Lists, but in 1907 she's living in Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, New Jersey when Sarah Phillips goes to stay with her.

Further to this...I have now located Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rees on the Ellis Island Site, - entering New York on the 14th June 1903, when she was 21yrs.

As you can imagine, I am absolutely thrilled to have made this breakthrough, & I'm hoping that I will be able to trace some Marriages, & possibly even some living rellies ;D That would be just amazing!

Thanks for all of your help,

Best Wishes, Romilly :)
