Jeremiah Searle B. 1816 West Monkton Somerset married Jane (?) (from Ireland) lists his occupation in the 1861 Census Taunton St James, as a Chelsea Pensioner. Would this mean that Jeremiah Searle had been a soldier? Why would he have been a Chelsea Pensioner? I would be very grateful for advice as to where I might look for a possible army service record.
Many thanks

I was going to suggest that you check the National Archives site http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/ and put his name into the search engine myself to find an entry, but not about his being a soldier, you can do a further check yourself and see what there is, but there is an entry, reference DD\X\CCE held at the Somerset Archive and Record Office
TAUNTON ST MARY
Premises in Holway Lane sold by Wm {William?} Hayman to Jeremiah L Searle..
might be interesting?

1871 census has Elizabeth Gratton as "Wife's Mother".
Might be noteworthy?

Hello Captain 2,
It is possible that Jeremiah was in the of the volunteer militia that existed in those days. There were a number of these in Somerset, Yeomanry and such like as well as the local militia groups.
I know of a book which lists the members of such military bodies and will look at this in the library. I will let you know if I find anything on Jeremiah Searle.
The description of "Chelsea Pensioner" suggests to me that Jeremiah did some military service to qualify for a pension from this body.

Thanks so much Jo that would be brilliant, and info would be gratefuly received.
Thanks again Angie

Hello Angie,
I have looked at the book with details of militia volunteers etc but this is dated 1805. It is too early for your relative in that case.
I looked at the Somerset groups for anyone by the name of Searle but couldn't find an entry.
Jo.

Hi Jo,
Thank you so much for looking, really appreciated. I have now managed to find Jane Grattan b. 1832 Kilkenny, Ireland ( Jeremiah's wife) all thanks to Rootschat pointing me in the right direction. I will try other avenues for Jeremiah. Very many thanks once again. Angie

I have just joined this forum because of seeing the thread about Jeremiah Searle who is my friends 2 or 3 times great grandfather, sorry but it's been a while since I did any work on this tree. Things are a bit hectic at the moment but I wanted to let you know that someone out here has some info if you need it. I see it's a while since your posting how are you doing with the Searle's. Lynne

Hello Sleepymurphy (Lynne) and welcome to Rootschat ;D. After all my research on Jeremiah Searle he turned out not to be related to my Searle family at all - itsn't that just the way it goes sometimes - anyway there were two Mary Jane Searle's both the same age in Taunton at the same time; one the daughter of Jeremiah Searle and the other (my Mary-Jane) the daughter of James Searle. sorry so many Mary-Ann's and Mary-Jane's in my tree!
I have some info on Jeremiah that I managed to collect along the way, if it is of any use to your friend please do get in touch and I shall PM you what I have.
Thanks for getting in touch.
Kind Regards
Angie

I think Lynne needs to make a further two posts before she can send and receive pm's.

I would love to have anything you have on Jeremiah, who confusingly was called William (his middle name) when in the army. I'm tracing the family for my friend. Also what is/are PMs? Lynne
-
Hi Lynne,
PM's are 'Personal Messages' which you can chose to send to other Rootschatters, you can send them directly to the person you wish to contact. MaryA is quite right though, you need to make a couple more posts before you can send and receive PM's. If you go to the 'Beginners' forum, there you will find details on how to send and receive personal messages (PM's). In the meantime I will post here all that I have found out about Jeremiah Searle, some of which you may already have.
Back in a moment with the information...
Regards
Angie

1871 Census RG10 /2371/F. 17 Pg 25
Jeremiah Searle. M. Head. 54 b. 1817 Somerset ( West Monkton)
Jane Searle. F. Wife 39. b. 1832 Ireland
George Searle. Son. 13 b. 1858 Herefordshire
Mary Jane Searle. Daughter. 11. b. Somerset (Taunton)
Emily Searle. Daughter 9. b. 1862 Somerset (Taunton)
Henrietta Searle Daughter. 7. b. 1864 Somerset (Taunton)
Julia Searle. Daughter. 5. b. 1864 Somerset (Taunton)
Alice Searle. Daughter. 3. b. 1868 Somerset (Taunton)
William Searle . Son. b. 1871 Somerset (Taunton)
Also in the house was Elizabeth Gratton (mother in law) 66. b. Ireland
I'm sorry but I have removed Jeremiah from my tree, but with the notes that I have left on him I believe that his parents were Mathew Searle b. 1786 in West Monkton, Somerset and Frances Spurle b. 1794 in West Monkton and that they were married in 1815 in West Monkton, Somerset. I did not get as far as verifying this information, as I realised that Jeremiah was not my relative so concentrated on James Searle, who is. I do hope this helps in some small way.
