Title: Device Manager help required - COMPLETED
Post by: Nadine Moore on Saturday 04 July 09 16:18 BST (UK)
I have an XP machine with some entries in Device Manager that I need to remove but am unable to.

The entries relate to my previous mobile phone so I know they are unnecessary. However, when I try to remove them I get the following message

"Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot up the computer."

the items are:
Sony Ericsson Device 116 USB Ethernet Emulation (NDIS 5) - AVG miniport driver
Sony Ericsson Device 116 USB Ethernet Emulation (NDIS 5) - Packet Scheduler Miniport
Sony Ericsson Device 816 USB Ethernet Emulation (NDIS 5) - AVG miniport driver
Sony Ericsson Device 816 USB Ethernet Emulation (NDIS 5) - Packet Scheduler Miniport

I have been able to disable the drivers but can't uninstall.

Any suggestions????

cheers

Uninstall the device using Add and Remove programs in Control Panel

If only it were that simple  ;D  ;D

There are no Sony Ericsson devices in Add and Remove PROGRAMS

You may need to uninstall the devices in safe mode.

It sounds like the devices are being started at boot time and you cannot remove them while they are live.

Check the following:

Start >> Run and type: msconfig in the box and press OK.

Click on the Startup tab and see if there are any entries for Ericsson.

Then click on the Service tab and see if there any entries for Ericsson.

hi downside

No joy i'm afraid. run msconfig as suggested but nothing in there at all.

Also tried booting into safe mode and trying to uninstall from there but no luck again.

Would re-installing the original software, then uninstalling that help??

thanks

Click on Start and look in the program list, sometimes there's an uninstall option listed under the programs name.

It sounds like these are USB devices and are only active when they are plugged into a USB port.  If they do not show up in Device Manager then they are USB devices.  If they do show up in Device Manager then delete them rather than uninstall them.

There are no programmes still installed, unfortunately. I guess these are something that got "left behind"  :)

Downside
The only place they appear is in Device Manager, under Network Adapters. I have disabled the drivers but when I right click, I do not get a delete option - only Update Driver, Enable, or Disable.

I no longer use the Sony Ericsson phone and that's why I wanted rid of them, any further suggestions?

cheers

Look in Network Connections, if they are there delete them.

No not there either.

I think they are something to do with my old mobile phone and connecting it to the pc to downlaod/upload info. I have deleted all the software that i used for that phone and these entries are all that are left in Device manager > Network adapters.

Loos like I may have to just ignore them  :)

You could delete them from the Registry, do you know how to do that.

Surely there is an option Uninstall when you right click the device in Network Adaptors?

Update Driver
Enable
Uninstall
Scan for hardware changes
Properties

Hi Dinie,

I just googled "AVG miniport driver" to see if anyone else had the same problem... you're not the first.

hope this resolves the problem.

If you right click it you should get the option to Remove it.

Why didn't i think of doing that  ;D thank you i'll check that link out.

GP
when I right click, I have an uninstall (but not remove) option. When I click the Uninstall option I get the Failed to Uninstall..... message. If I could right click and remove then I would have done so

You are my heroin  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D Thank you that link helped

I was thinking it was a Sony Ericsson problem but after reading the link you provided thought it may be an AVG one instead.

I disabled my firewall, went back to Device Manager and attempted to Enable each device (after previously disabling them as they were no longer required).

As I enabled each device and the screen refreshed, it disappeared.

I have reactivated my firewall and, fingers crossed, they have gone for good  ;D

Thabk you one and all for your time and patience with me.  Damn computers    ::)

cheers
