Title: COMPLETED, Thank you. Irons, Glenford Brigg,
Post by: Eilleen on Friday 17 July 09 22:39 BST (UK)
Hi  :)

I am trying to help a friend  :)

her late mother was born Hilda May Irons, 1919, Reg, Glanford Brigg .

the parents of that lady were William John Irons and Alice Mary Cook, who's marriage was registered
June 1908, Glenford Brigg,

my question  ::)
is there anyway of finding out where William or Alice originated from.

Eilleen.

Hi Eilleen

You could do this....

Find them on the 1911 Census -  which would give you ages and pob
http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx?4

Was their first child a son named Frank born around, or just after mid 1910?
If so, I think they are indexed on the 1911 in Lincolnshire, Glanford Brigg as :
John IRONS age 28
Mary IRONS age 23
Frank IRONS age 9 mths

I could not find then indexed under the full forenames.

If this is confirmed then, you could get the full Census transcript or image for extra information and then  you can start using FreeBMD to narrow down birth registrations and from there to the Census.

Cheers
AMBLY

The marriage took place on 29 June 1908 at St John's Church, Scunthorpe:
William John IRONS, 25, Bachelor, Labourer; Abode - Scunthorpe; Father - John IRONS, "Bobber"
Alice Mary COOK, 21, Spinster; Abode - Scunthorpe; Father - Walton COOK, Labourer
Witnessed by Walton COOK, Frances HOLMES

Incidentally a 'bobber' is a metal polisher, or someone who unloaded fishing boats.

This looks like Alice in the 1891 census at Westwoodside which is in the Isle of Axholme:

RG12/2628 folio 83

High Street
Walter COOK, Head, Married, 26, Miner (Iron); Born Yaddlethorpe, Lincs
Emma Elizabeth COOK, Wife, Married, 23; Born South Kelsey, Lincs
Alice Mary COOK, daughter, 3; Born Westwoodside, Lincs
Charles COOK, Son, 1; Born Ashby, Lincs

Earlier census returns correctly list her father as being Walton COOK.

There is an obituary in the Scunthorpe & Frodingham Star 21/3/1953 for a Mrs Alice Mary IRONS who died aged 65.

Hi Eileen,
http://www.northlincs.gov.uk/NorthLincs/Leisure/libraries/familyhistory/Surnames/
is the one for the newspaper link.
There's no need to make a long night of it - all you had to do was google the newspaper name and it's the second link.  :)

pamthomas, Hi  :)

thank you , I must have been practicing my senior moments ready for the real thing  8)

each bit of information is a great help.

so,   that said,   I need to sign up to get BMD index , for years covering 1920 to 1960

what would be the easiest and cheapest way to do this , ie  best site for me  :)

It depends how often you want to look at the records. If you occasionally dip in and out then 'pay as you go', but if you are going to use the records a lot then a subscription might be better value for money.

My main worry is that I all ways go round in circle's to find what I am looking for,  ;D

so I could use up a lot of credits  just experimenting, ::)

or finding the best way to access things.  :)

I can't find them, but will leave it to the experts on here!

Have found a marriage of a Walton Cook to Emma Elizabeth Mawer 2Q 1885 Caistor 7a 1387 - if that's any help.

Polly,
Thank you for looking, :)

Yes I did have that marriage , it seems to be the COOK side can be found,

but not the IRONS.

Me too! ;)

Of the 1911 family, only baby Frank was born Lincs (and his mother in Yorks).  I'm not sure about WJI.

The best way to find out is to look at the 1911 census and see where he was born.

You've probably got this already...

Winterton Cemetery inscriptions:
William John IRONS, died 30 April 1971, aged 88
+ son, Frank IRONS, died 4 January 1976, aged 65

I've just tapped this in the 1911 census index:
John IRONS, born 1883, birthplace Staffordshire

It came up as a match for John IRONS, born 1883, aged 28, residing in Glanford Brigg district.

1891 census has quite a few IRONS born in Walsall, so I put this into the 1911 census and it came up with John IRONS in Glanford Brigg as a match.

The nearest I can find in FreeBMD births index is March quarter 1883
William John HIRONS, Walsall district, Vol 6b, page 720

1971 death index gives William John IRONS date of birth as 16 November 1882.

Hi Hilda Irons was my Aunt and Alice Mary was my Grandmother, my mother was part of her second family, but she was not married to my Grandfather. I used to stay with my Aunt when I was very small on their farm near Lincoln.
