I am looking for any information on Molly Richings, possibly born 1914, from Aston-On-Carrant, Gloucestershire and after her marriage, from Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.

WHAT I KNOW:

The Molly I am looking for was the daughter of:
Frank Edward RICHINGS, born 30-Nov-1876 at Kingswood, near Wotton-Under-Edge, GLS
and Bertha KING, born app. 1881 in Loughborough, Essex, the daughter of George KING.

Frank and Bertha married on 22-June-1910 at Wotton-Under-Edge, GLS

On the 1911 Census Frank and Bertha are living in Ambala, India and Frank is a Sergeant with the Royal Horse Artillery  based in Ambala, Punjab, India

I have the birth certificates for three children born in Ambala, of which 2 died at, or soon after, birth.

The third child born to Frank and Bertha was:

Marion Adeline RICHINGS born 18-May-1914

I think that Marion is possible the Molly I am looking for.

I have two letters in my family papers, both undated.

The first is written by Frank Richings to his brother Charles and the personalised headed paper is from Carrant Poultry Farm, Aston-On-Carrant, Glos and the relevant section is:
“Molly has left school and we have apprenticed her to the Haridressing etc, in Cheltenham”.
If we assume that Molly is Marion Adeline and that she is 14-17 years of age, then the letter was written between 1928 and 1931.

The second letter is written by Charlotte Wentworth (nee Richings), Frank’s sister, to her daughter and states:
“I just wondered if you knew Molly (Frank’s Girl) she is now married and lives at Tewkesbury, married a policeman … and they have one child …. I do not know if it is a boy or girl”
The only clue I can pinpoint in this letter is that it was written before August 1944.

WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW:
Was Marion Adeline Richings known as Molly Richings, or was there another daughter?
Who did Molly Richings marry?

Any help would be most appreciated.

CW,

No direct help but Marion/Marian was originally a diminutive of Mary.  Later diminutives of Mary include Moll and Molly.

Thanks Osprey for the information you supplied via PM - looks spot on! Neither entry appears in FBMD.

I will get certs just to be sure.  We do appear to have 2 Molly Richings in this 'wonderful' family.

Thanks also to ChasH.  Sort of the lines I was working along but some of my other assumptions in this family have been a bit wrong.  One family included two sons - one called Harold and one called Harry!!

CW,

Ah, but Harry is a diminutive of Henry so that might heve been his baptismal name.

Just a small point Cello but is the reference to Bertha King being born in Loughborough correct?

The only Loughborough I know is in Leicestershire and neither Google Earth nor Dove has that place name in Essex

Hi Ishtat

I see what you mean!!!

I don't know anything at all about Bertha King.  Her residence on marriage certificate is the same as Franks - The Ridings, Wotton-U-Edge. Her father was George King (deceased), Contractor

On the 1911C when they are in Ambala, India the birthplace details are:
Loughboro, Essex, England

Suspect someone got it wrong!

But I don't have anything else and I can't find her on the 1901 or 1891C.  On marriage certificate she was 29 years old, so born about 1881.

have you looked at the original of the 1911 census or are you relying on the transcript?
I can see a vague possibility in St Pancras in 1901 with George Henry King father of Zol(?) Berthe aged 17 born in India RG13/151 folio 6 pg 4.

Hi Osprey

Thanks for your reply. :)

Yes I got the information off the original - I've given up on transcripts! I have posted dozens of requests for amendments to transcriptions - so far they have all been successfully changed which I gather from other peoples experiences is not that common.

It is very clearly written and no doubt that it is 'Loughboro, Essex, England'.  However, I think that in this case it probably was not completed by the person. It is a military entry and all the writing is the same, so a military clerk probably completed it.

I don't have any reason to think that Bertha wasn't born in the UK.  The only reason she is in India on the Census is because her husband was in the Royal Horse Artillery based at that time in India.

Hi Osprey

Sadly no, nothing that leaps out anyway.

The witnesses were:
John Blizzard Richings (son of the errant John/Thomas Richings who scived off to NZ - from Lucy2 thread referred to in my 1st posting on this thread)

and Frederick Davis.

Do you have Bertha's death registration for a check on her age from that?

What about Fibis? Any help there?

http://www.fibis.org/

Or should we just make a run for the hills?

Thanks Osprey

No, unfortunately I don't know anything about Bertha at all.

I have found a Bertha King, aged 19, b 1882, born at Houghton, Essex  on the 1901 census RG13 2815/52/14

Maybe this is her.

I had a quick look on Fibis but couldn't find anything relevant, but will keep looking at some of the links from there.

If we assume that Frank and Bertha stayed at Aston-on-Carrant until their deaths, the district I think we probably need is Cheltenham.  I have had no joy at all with any of my Richings family on FreeBMD and have no idea when either Frank or Bertha died.

On FreeBmd transcription of the GRO death reg index is complete under to 1910. Between 1910 & 1931 it's not far off and after that it's minimal. Ancestry has transcribed deaths 1984 - 2005. Until Ancestry put online their indexing (later this year?), there's only one way and that's searching through the complete index quarter by quarter.

Just double checked and how did I miss this reg last time I looked!   ::)

Marion Adeline Smith died July 1989 Cheltenham vol 22 pg 1329 birth date given as 18/5/1914

Possible for her husband May 1992 Cheltenham 22 1421 dob 3/8/1910

Fantastic - thanks Osprey. :) 8)

After 5 years I think I am finally getting started on this branch! The 1911 census was the first clue and now it is starting to fall into place with your wonderful help.

I will order the certificate for Marion this week and go from there.

Good to see Molly is emerging thanks to Osprey. I ran the information about the Aston under Carrant connection around my Richings relatives in Gloucestershire and not surprisingly drew a complete blank.

Houhgton the village is in Cambridgeshire near Huntingdon but there is a Houghton Manor near Brentwood in Essex. I imagine it was a pretty rural area at the time so perhaps Bertha was a country lass or a domestic servant.

At first sight the mis- transcription of Houghton to Loughboro' seems a bit unlikely but if one is a bit careless with the H they both appear to start Lough and to squashed together easily looks like a b
