I'm looking for birth of Lucy Cripps who married John Ballard, Shinfield.
Also any help with father of John Charles Ballard and mother Mariam Clements.
It is possible John had a twin called William and brothers Thomas and Joshua.
-
Any clues as to birthyears??
freebmd shows the Cripps/Ballard marriage as 1840
-
Many thanks for quick reply.
Sorry I should have given dates.
I have obtained marriage cert.1840 at Shinfield.
I would like to know more about Lucy - her father was Matthew and from IGI I believe he was married on 12.3.1771 in Derby to Sarah Bird. I am not sure whether I have the correct Matthew.
-
When was Lucy born and was she b Berkshire?
EDIT
www.familysearch.org
Lucy Cripps Christening: 08 OCT 1818 Shinfield, Berkshire, Father: Matthew Cripps Mother: Sarah Cripps
Louisa Cripps Christening: 31 DEC 1821 Shinfield
Father: Matthew Cripps Mother: Sarah Cripps

I very much doubt that is the right marriage - they would have been married 47yrs by 1818
-
1841 for Great Lea Shinfield - both born in county
Matthew Cripps 45 agric labourer
John 20
HO107 Piece 29/10 Folio 6 Page 32
There is a David Cripps aged 15 on the same page also working as an ag labourer
-
These 1851 ages do not match the 1841. 1841 ages were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs so Matthew could have been up to 49 in 1841
1851 for Shinfield - working and living in the household of Elijah Wheatley - a carpenter employing 3 men
Mathew Cripps 60 widower b Wokingham labourer
John Cripps 26 b Hurst
HO107 Piece 1693 Folio 40 Page 40
-
Deaths
Matthew Cripps aged 70 December qtr 1866 Wokingham

Many thanks for all your help.
I think my Lucy Cripps must have been christened 8 Oct 1818 as the date agrees to with the marriage certificate. It seems odd that a family should use such similar names for their children. I have the 1841 Census 107/29/10 with John Ballard 25, Lucy 21, Caleb 20, Louisa Cripps 20 ? twins, Miriam Ballard 3 although I have her birth cert. 1842, Emma 1.
Many thanks for finding Matthew Cripps for me. I am very pleased to have been given so much help. :)
I'm not sure how to go back further. Should I join Findmypast to help?

Hi
Re: Lucy & Louisa - definitely not twins - see IGI records in my reply above
It's because of the rounding down of ages in 1841. The families that had a child every year look as though they have triplets and twins in their households
This is the only IGI entry but birthyear does not match. 1851 shows son John as b Hurst
MATTHEW CRIPS Christening: 21 MAR 1792 Hurst, Berkshire,
Father: MATTHEW CRIPS Mother: ESTHER
MATTHEW CRIPS Spouse: ESTHER RANCE
Marriage: 17 JAN 1783 Hurst, Berkshire
Re: parish records and FindMyPast - I don't use FindMyPast so I'm not really sure what is available and whether it would be worth your while

Hi
Great more help!
The twins I thought were Louisa and Caleb but as you say dates on census not reliable.
You mention Parish Records. How do I get hold of them?
-
Hi
All the IGI entries above are from parish records
Parish records are usually held in the records office of the appropriate area (Berkshire)

Hi Carole
Many thanks - I shall have to try IGI.

I gave you that info in my reply dated 26th August above

So sorry to waste your time.

Hi
You haven't wasted my time - I was just bothered that you may not have seen the info and were still looking
-
I do get a bit confused as I am searching so many places for different ancestors. Probably the wrong way to work. I have now received the Death Certificate for Matthew Cripps, Farm Labourer, 22.11.1866 Union Workhouse Wokingham age 70.
Sarah Cripps his wife, also died in a Workhouse, Wargrave, 4.11.1837 age 51. I believe in those days the only hospitals for the poor were situated in Workhouses so it doesn't necessarily mean these people were living there. It would be sad if they were separated for the last years of their lives.
-
Both my great grandparents died within 3mths of each other in the Liverpool Workhouse. You are right in saying that the Workhouse hospitals were the only places for the poor to receive long term treatment
I don't know whether you have already seen this link but it makes excellent (if sad) reading

Yes I have looked at this document because a number of my ancestors seem to die in workhouses if they reach an old age and as their families are living close by I hope they are there just for hospital treatment. I remember in my home town years ago there was an "Infirmary" next to the more modern hospital and some patients were brought in for more specialist treatment.
