I am trying to trace more details of maternal ancestors (of my Husband John MacLeod). They are:
THOMAS CALDER MCDONALD(MACDONALD) who apparently went to Ontario, Canada in 1906, age 27 yrs. He appears in 1911 Canada Census as a Joiner, (34 yrs.) at Hotel Dept. (Depot?), living at 125 Wellington St. West, Toronto South - with his brother WILLIAM (23 yrs.) Hotel Teamster (Checker-GTR - Grand Truck Railway), and a JOSEPH MCDONALD (40 yrs.) also a Hotel Teamster. Thomas and bro. William were both born in Cullicudden, Resolis, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland, T. in 1879 and W. in 1887. No further trace of Joseph, altho. feel he is probably a relative of sorts, seeing they were all living together at the same lodging house. (Joseph's arrival year looks like 1880 or 1840 on 1911 Census?).
Thomas married Christine Manson (b. 1885 Orkney Isl., Scotland) in 1913 at York, Ontario, and had three children. I have further info. on his children.
William married in 1914 to Mary Callaghan (b. Greenock, Scotland, 1889) but no further info. known. as to children, and where they lived, etc.
No other info. re Joseph, and if he is relative or not. Cany anyone help with this convoluted enquiry? Ruth Macleod

Hi Ruth,
Here are William's Attestation Papers. He was still living in Toronto in 1915.

Thanks for quick replies. Had a re-read of 1911 Census and I think the date Joseph immigrated is 1890 (age 20 yrs.) and his birthdate is July 1870. He was 40 at time of 1911 Census. Anything further appreciated. Any idea where Joseph was born, and parents, or to whom he was married, if he did?
-
In 1914, he is still a foreman with Hendrie & Co., rooming at 47 Beverley.

You might be able to track him, in other directories:

Not that this helps you, but I just checked the Wellington address, and they were living within blocks of most of my ancestors. :o ::)
-
Haven't my files to hand at the moment, but I seem to remember that I checked out the address, and info. and found the Grand Trunk Railway Hotel, which I think may have been where they were all working - Thomas as Joiner, and other two as Hotel Teamsters ('on street').
-
I'm not finding them on the 1911 census. Are they listed as MacDonald or McDonald, please? The census return should show their place of birth.
Got it - was typing Thomas, born 1870. ::)

There is a death for Joseph McDonald, born Scotland - no parents given
Died 31 Oct 1919 at Toronto, York. Address was 51 Peter St. Age 51 years. Occupation - foreman

Informant A.W. Miles. Cause of death - apoplexy 1 day.

I would contact the Toronto library - Ask a Librarian. Trace William in that city for as long as possible. If you find that he maintains a presence in Toronto you can try the pay site for the Toronto Star - Pages of the Past and look through birth announcements for any children.

Hi Lisa,
Thanks very much for your help. Filled in quite a few gaps. You mentioned the Wellington St address was within blocks of your ancestors. Do you have a connection to the Mc/MacDonalds? Thomas Calder was my GGF. Wm his Brother. Still haven't found if there's a family connection to Joseph yet.
Attached is the 1911 census sheet.
1911 Census image removed. PM sent.

Hi bigmac1x:
There's no connection at all, just thought I would mention it. ;) My ancestors lived on McCaul, Adelaide, Yonge, Sheppard, Temperance, etc.
I wrote to several Toronto cemetery offices, asking for further information about my ancestors (stating my connection to the deceased, and that it was for genealogy). Several people were kind enough to supply information. Unfortunately, at the time, Mt. Pleasant was unable to be of assistance. I don't know if they would provide information about the Joseph who died in 1919 or not, but it might be worth a try. There is a chance that he might be in the same burial plot as your rellies.
I know exactly where Mt. Pleasant is...my aunt used to live across the street from the cemetery. It is quite a big cemetery.

Thanks to all, for your help. Person who posted Census record is my husband's second cousin (once removed) who lives in Canada, and we have been and still are in touch over the years, working out family connections. He is descended from Thomas Calder MacDonald., and my husband is connected via his mother who is a McDonald from Cullicudden.
Anything further you may find would be really great. Thanks again. ;D ;D ;D Ruth

Hi again,
Do you know for a fact that Joseph is burried in Mount Pleasant Cemetary? I was just checking back through your postings and don't see mention of a burial site anywhere.

Perhaps your second cousin in Toronto would make a trip to the library and check out the Toronto directories to see if William remained in Toronto. When he disappeared from the directories is either a clue to his death or when he moved away from the city.

Hi Debbie,
Thanks for the suggestion. Will follow-up on the length of William's stay in Toronto at the library. Guess I'm going to have to add Ancestry.ca to my UK membership to find out if William and Mary had any kids.
Just a follow-up to my question about Mount Pleasant - I went back and now do see the reference to Mount Pleasant. Sorry about that. Have written to the Humphrey Funeral Home (where A. W. Miles used to be an owner) before my trek to the cemetary office. Would be nice to get a copy of the death certificate and also know what plot I'm looking for before I go. Still need to prove if he's a blood relative. Hopefully the owner of the plot is still alive and can fill in some blanks too.
Next is to find out if Joseph and Harriet had any kids.

Just a funny coincidence. I was at Prospect Cemetary visiting my Grandfather's (Thomas Calder MacDonald Sr.) gravesite. Taking a picture and couldn't help but notice a stone in the background with the Calder name on it. Not a common name so I wonder if there is a connection. Haven't found it yet.

I can send you the image of the death certificate if you PM me your email address.
Also the following marriage for Joseph McDonald, Foreman, 42, of 125 Wellington St. Toronto b. Coldstream, Scotland. s/o Robert Mcdonald and Agnes Kerr to
Harriet Jane Mcdonald, 23, born Ross-shire, Scotland, living 327 Euclid Ave. Toronto d/o William Mcdonald and Margaret Calder. Witness: Mrs. C. McDonald 327 Euclid Ave. Bella Mcdonald 58 Beatty Ave.
Marriage 9 April 1914
Is Harriet related?
Debbie
-
Yes, Harriet Jane McDonald is younger sister of Thomas Calder Mac(Mc)Donald; she was born 30 July, 1891 Cullicudden, Resolis, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland. So we have found the connection at last! Thanks so much.
-
Looks like marriage witness Bella (Isabella McDonald) is also a sister, born 18 May, 1893, Cullicudden.
-
YES! YES! YES!
And so is Bella! (Isabella b.1893). Both Harriet Jane and Bella are William's and Thomas' Sisters.
Joseph married Harriet Jane??? Then maybe Joseph isn't related? Could be Cousins I guess - stranger things have happened.
Mrs. C McDonald is probably Thomas Calder McDonald's wife.
And now I know Joseph's Parents - so I can start checking that out.
And Euclid Ave - there's a big bell going off. I'll have to check with my older Brothers on this one.
Thank you so much! In just 1 message you've filled in so many blanks (and created a few more unfortunately).
I'll pm you with my email for the death certificate. Do you have the marrige cert?
Thank you again. You've really made my weekend!
Stephen

Just in case it's:

I see your last name is MacDonald too. What's your connection?
Thanks,

Haven't had any luck in further tracing WILLIAM MACDONALD (b. 21 June, 1887, Cullicudden, Resolis, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland).
Facts I already know are: he was living 327 Euclid Ave., Toronto, Canada, with his sister Harriet Jane MacDonald (1912-1914) and was a driver.
Joined 123 Bn. C.E.F. Royal Grenadiers, Canada Expeditionary Force, as Private, 8 Dec., 1915 and at time, was living at 26 Bulwer St., Toronto, Canada. He married Mary Callaghan 7 January, 1914 (she was born 7 Oct. 1889, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland)- at time of marriage she was living at 77 Belleville St., Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Anyone help with any info. re his children, and deaths of both he and Mary, presumably in Canada. Ruth

I keep getting a message saying the connection has been refused and they will keep trying for five days. Have had this twice?
Perhaps this is why the documents you have been trying to send having come through. ( I sent you a personal message.)
-
Since we seem to be having trouble with the PM's I'll bring you up to date here. Been to Mount Pleasant Cemetary twice now. Unfortunately there's no stone - that is obvious. They are going to raise the corner markers and see if a stone can be found. Apparently this was requested to be done in 2005 by someone - maybe an undiscovered McDonald?
They won't tell me who the lot owner is - damn privacy laws. I drafted a letter and asked if they could send it to the owner on my behalf. Damn.
But the good part - there are 5 burials in this lot.
Joseph in 1919,
Harriet in 1982 and
Harriet's 4 year old Son (Charles James Fadden) from her second marriage to Charles Colburn Fadden. 1927.
AND
Robert and Agnes, Joseph's Parents. 1918 at age 82 and 1920 at age 82 respectively.
Spent 4 hours at the library yesterday searching the Death notices in the Toronto Star. Searched by name first and there's just too many 'hits' to check them all out in the 60 minute time limit they give you on the PC. They also say the character recognition software may miss some too. I did check the ones that I knew the dates - Harriet and Joseph. No luck.
Went to the microfiche to check on Harriet and Joseph. Checked back two weeks prior to internment and nothing! I may have to go back and try the other 2 Toronto newspapers.
With that wasted 4 hours I didn't get to the Toronto directories to find William. That's today's task. But the problem I'm anticipating is how do I know which of the many Williams is him? 1912 he's at 125 Wellinton as a Teamster. In the 1914 directory Debbie sent he's not at 125 anymore and I can't figure out which one he is. Doesn't say Teamster. I tried looking at his Wife's address when they married (1914) but it can't be read on their Marriage Cert. We know he's at 26 Bulwer St in 1915 (Attest. Papers).
I can get photocopies of all the McDonald directory pages today but I'm going to need some direction on identifying our William.
