Hi - you may find some interesting background in Blomfields History of Finmere, downloadable from Google Books, link below. John Newman is mentioned on pages 24 and 26, but it's possible to search the book using various terms:

Thanks Graham - I'll check that out.

Yesterday I found another reference to him in a copy of Jackson's Oxford Journal dated May 20,1820 - his death notice
"On 12th inst. died at Clapham,John Newman Esq., of Finmere House,in this county, and upwards of twenty years an active Magistrate and Deputy Lieutenant for Buckinghamshire."
I'm interested to know if these pursuits were a full or part time
occupation.
Coincidently his son John b1810,my GGGG Father was also a Magistrate at Port Adelaide in South Australia, where he was a successful Customs & Shipping Agent.
Thanks again
Denis

Hi there you in sunny Qld! Freezing down here in NSW!

Re John Newman- I have just been reading old articles and came across John Newman re shipping agent and ship to NZ.

I gather you have quite a bit on the Newmans. Would you know if Ann Newman ( who married Robert jacques and arrived in SA with two sons in 1838 is connected to John? I also noted that there was a William Newman.

I am trying to tease the Jacques apart at the moment ( as Robert was linked to my ancestor Sarah), Thomas, William and Charlotte.

I saw that John and his wife Josephine emigrated  on t he Canton in 1838.  Did they come from London? Robert and Ann were married St Marylebone London in 1829 so the record says.

Would welcome any info you may have. There were also newmans who were architects in London so I read as well.

Hi Bronhill

Thanks for your note. I'll swap you some hot for some cold.

I don't believe there is any connection. John N b. 1810 was the youngest child of John & Dorothea who married in Teddington in 1788 and then settled in Finmere in Buckinghamshire. His known siblings are listed in my original post, but there is no Ann.
He was certainly a shipping agent in Adelaide for many years, and he more than likely was the agent for ships sailing to/from NZ.
Do you have a birth date/location for Ann?

Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

Hi there,

Ann was born in 1809.... not sure where. and married in 1829 in London.

That's about all I know. Just thought that both arriving in SA, as families did given the structure of the immigration program that they could have been connected. Is always possible they w ere cousins I suppose. Families who were connected did come out about the same time- at the settlement and proclamation of SA. They were all free settlers.
Am Just trying to find info about the Jacques and as I have found in other cases- family names keep popping up which are inextricably linked!

Hi AussieZebra

Thanks for your note.

I think I have unravelled JN b. 1810,his marriage (4 childn) ,emigration, his de-facto relationship (11 childn) and his death and burial location, and I'm happy to compare notes if you wish. With more and more indexes and other information becoming available, there's always something to learn about our forebears.

My main focus now is in sorting out his Father, JN b. 1757 and his two marriages - (5 Childn?/12 Childn?) .  I beleive he married in Gretna Green SCT in 1778 and  then in 1788 at Teddington in Middlesex. Any assistance would be welcome.

Ciao

I haven't got that far yet.

So he never married Emily Jane Ginbey ?

I was told that Josephine couldn't stand the heat and went back to England.

I'm descended from George and I'm looking for links back to the Newman Bank which I believe was a John Newman who was the father of Cardinal John Henry Newman.

From there I hope to trace it back to the Plantagenet's

Hi Aussie-Zebra

I presume your forebear is George Newman GINBEY b. 6 July 1865 @ Woodville. Is this correct?

John N  b. 1810 and Emily GINBEY were never married... (she was his housekeeper from about 1855). You will find that her children were cross registered as GINBEY and NEWMAN when born.

Good luck with the Newman Bank trail.

Ciao

Ahhh that's where the maid story comes in.

The Ginbey reference was dropped soon after that.

Yep George Ginbey Newman was my GGGF he and Eliza bought up my Mother as her parents couldn't afford to raise both due to the economic times of the 20's.

Her father was George Clifton Newman  B 08 Apr 1891 D 30 Mar 1965.

I'm making progress with John Newman
There where 2 banks  Manning, Newman, Ward & Ramsbottom, Newman and Co which along with a brewery collapsed due to the economy at the time.

He had six children 3 girls and 3 boys John Henry, Francis William and unknown

If John N was not the unknown son of John Newman then he must have been a nephew I think.

I'm interested in the family of John Newman.  Do either of you have a tree they could share with me?

I'm convinced we're connected to the father of Cardinal Newman in some way, due to a series of coincidences, but have yet been unable to find anything.

Charles Newman was my Gggf. He was the second son of John Newman and Emily Ginbey. He married Isabella Manuel. He was a bank manager and unfortunately an alcoholic. His wife and children ended up in Victoria Australia. My gf was Arthur Garibaldi Newman. He married Ellen Anna Wright. He was a sawmiller and Timber merchant throughout Victoria and Tasmania. They had 5 children, Arthur John (Bill); Helen Winifred, Nancy Adele, Charles Albert (Peter) who died on HMAS Sydney WWII, and George William. Helen was my mother. I am interested in any information on John Newmans life in England prior to immigrating to Australia.
