Post by: Spatts on Saturday 26 September 09 14:53 BST (UK)
Need Help, Looking for Walker brothers possibly twins went gold prospecting to Australia in the 1850's, have family rings & would like to know which one of them came back to England a wealthy man. The other became a Mayor of one of the towns in Melbourne & they were from Lincoln, Lincolnshire or Leicestershire. Grt Grt Grandfather Joseph Walker, wife Eliza Walker (nee Kirk) Joseph b 1835, Eliza b1841,  Joseph's father, William (Potter) by trade.

Theres is a Thomas Walker 26, wife Charlotte 28, William Walker 26, wife Isabella 22 (nee Otto or maybe Otter) & a George Walker 19 who sailed on the ship Catherine from Liverpool to Plynouth in Jan & set sail again 9th Feb 1851 to Australia, maybe stopping near a port to Melbourne before reaching Port Adelaide on the 26th May 1851.

The rings would have been commissioned at a jewellers, the mans ring is small, oval pattern on the front with crossed shovel, pickaxe & stake running through the centre from top to bottom, very similar to the one's on the memorial found at Moliagul under the anvil. Inscribed inside is (With these I got it). the woman's ring is larger with rubies on top, all set upside down. Hope someone can help, thankyou.

It seems very likely that these are the deaths of William and his wife Isabella in South Australia.

William WALKER aged 81 died on 17th November 1903 Nr Red Hill.
His residence was given as Nr Red Hill.
Relative was listed as Joseph Walker, son.
Ref = Dal 298/ 1 0 8

Isabella WALKER aged 75 died on 20th April 1902 Nr Red Hill
Residence not listed but relative  listed as William WALKER, husband.
Ref = Dal  285/92

Charlotte WALKER aged 38 died on 3rd January 1862 at Rocksprings.
Residence listed as Rocksprings.
Relative given as Thomas WALKER, husband.
Ref =  Str 14/48

Rocksprings in the Strathalbyn District  is not that far from the Mt Barker District where William and Isabella were at that stage.

No death that is readily apparent for Thomas Walker, so I wonder if it was him that went to Victoria/back to England?

 Hi,

There is one birth in the Victorian indexes to Thomas Walker and Charlotte Warrick a son Joseph born 1854 in "Moor" #3790.

However this is not them as Charlotte died age 45 in 1857 parents Thomas Warrick and Charlotte not known.Too oldfor your Charlotte of course.

Coincidence that there are two couples Thomas and Charlotte Walker around at the same time.  Do you have any idea of Charlotte's maiden name or the names of the Walker 's parents?

It will help trace children and deaths.

regards

Robyn

Something that isn't on that website, Spatts, are the burial details for William Walker and Isabella. They can be found at
http://www.pirie.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=130

Just select Redhill and enter the surname Walker.

Dee,

Well done.

What a great find very well documented and certainly answers all the questions and it seems GEORGE was the brother who struck it lucky and returned to the UK then back to AUs with a wife.

great work

Thanks, Robyn.

The person concerned has certainly put a lot of effort and care into publishing that tree.

Hello all on my message board, especially Dee, I am overwelmed by the responce I have had since putting my request to people only yesterday, I am in shock at what has come back, it is far far more than I expected.

From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank each & every one of you for your help, I deeply appreciate all you have done, not forgetting Cancan who set me off on the right direction from the start.

Well, I'm going to let my emotions settle down before I sit down & have a real good read of all the information there is, then maybe make some contact with distant relatives.

Thank you all again,  Spatts.

Hi everyone, havn't made contact as yet with the living relatives in Australia, just wanted to check a couple of things first. Could someone do a census check for me, I have them here but, can't find George on the 1841 or 1851, have the others & all dates coinside.

Also looking for any info on William's father Anthony Walker, have no dates, birth or death.
Have been told by my mother there is another family ring but it is buried with my Grt Gran, Lily Ann Walker (nee Andrew, hence my first name) in Droylsden Cemetary, her name isn't on the stone, only her sisters name, Elizabeth Nightingale, going to rectify that asap.
Hope you can help, thank you Spatts.

Does that help, Spatts, or do you need details?
The details are all given on the http://www.walkernet.info/265.html
website under William Walker, the father.

Hi Dee,

Hope you are well.

I did make contact with Colleen who owns the site Walkernet & her William Walker comes from Bourne, Thomas also from Bourne, Lincs & George too but, George is not a brother. George did come back in 1855 I think & went back to Aus in 1856 with his new bride, his brother John & wife.

I have printed out all of the Walkernet family tree & even found William & Thomas on the Shipslist, both aged 26 but Colleen thinks it a error. George is on the same ship Catherine 1851 listed amongst the single men. I looked & printed out all the Shipslist from about 1848 to 1859.

It has been a very hard task tracing my tree & trying to find a connection, if any with Colleen's family, still searching.

Regards,

Spatts.

Hi, My name is Janice Hutchison (nee Ball) and I've just come across your post.  I'm not sure if my ancestors are the same people, but my great-grandfather was Thomas Walker was born in 1825 in Bourne, Lincolnshire, UK .  He died on 12th July 1877 at Aldgate.  Thomas married twice, firstly to    Charlotte Jessop on 06 Jan 1851 in Deeping Fen, Lincolnshire, England.  Charlotte was born in 1823 in Lincolnshire, England and died on  03 Jan 1862, aged 38 years, in Rocksprings, District of Strathalbyn, South Australia, Australia.  Thomas Walker (45 years) then married Eliza LACEY (aged 26 years) on 2nd November 1870, at Macclesfield, South Australia, Australia.  They had a son, Thomas Edward Walker bn. 27th May 1868 – d. 1934, who was my father's grandfather.  My dad's birth mother was Rita May Walker, born to Thomas Edward Walker and Adelaide Victoria Higgins in 1911.   I'd be interested to know if this is the same family and if so, if you have any other information about them.  Many thanks, Janice.

Response to Janicekaye
Hi Janice,  I am your father's cousin. The baby that you nominated as your great grandfather Thomas Edward WALKER was born with spina-bifida on the 27 May 1868 and passed-away 16 Oct 1868 at Bugle Ranges, Ref BDM 34/30.  I have the certificates.  On the 6 Jan 1874 your G-grandfather also named Thomas Edward WALKER was born to the same parents Thomas WALKER and Eliza LACEY at Bugle Ranges, Ref. BDM 143/473.  Now you will find the dates for his marriage and death align with his age. I have birth and marriage certificates.
We have other relatives who also state that Thomas Edward 1 is your G-grandfather and cannot be persuaded otherwise.  It is a long story on why this is so. I prefer not to argue, they are nice people.
Regards Brian WALKER, son of Albert Edward WALKER

Hi Brian, I have just noticed your reply to my post, back in April.  I recall my father mentioning some time ago he had met with you but I'm not aware of any information you provided to him re our family history.  I was wondering if we could perhaps make contact to share information?  Thanks, Janice.

Hi Janicekaye,
Went to your father's funeral. You did your father proud with your eulogy.  There are so many similarities within the Walker family, I saw it when I met him, and listening to you.  There is no doubt that the Walker/Pitcher gene was dominant within him.
I am happy to pass material on to you.  My apologies for not reading your reply sooner or contacting you at the funeral.  Does the Ball family still live at the family home?  I will drop off some documents there if it is so, otherwise I will make different arrangements.  I did a fair bit of research on Granny's family too including stories of their lives.
I'm sure that we can work out some form of communication, Brian
