Post by: pwitz on Wednesday 30 September 09 11:18 BST (UK)
Going to Lincoln Archives on Saturday 3 October.

If anyone would like me to look anything up in the Parish Records, please give me as much information as possible and I'll do my best!

Oooh Polly,

Thanks so much for your offer -
I have a Frances Surfleet marrying Edward Campbell on 14 March 1825 at St James, Great Grimsby  (from Vital Records Index). Could you check it for me and see if there is any more information?

Could I be cheeky too, and ask if you could find Frances Surfleet's baptism?
She is also known as "Fanny", on her son Charles' baptism at Grimsby on 23 November 1825.
She gives her age as 49 (b abt 1802) and place of birth as North Kelsey, in the 1851 census, but the only one I can find, on the IGI is a "male" Francis Surfleet, baptised on the 22 September 1799.

It is really good of you - thanks again Polly,

Yorkslass

Hello Geoff-E,

Thanks for taking the trouble to look that up for me.  I have seen that one - and it's also on the IGI site, same date, but under "Thorganby".

I know Thorganby/Swinhope are only about 10 miles from North Kelsey.  I just wondered if someone had made an error in the North Kelsey baptisms and the Francis who was baptised was really a Frances!!

She is consistent on the two censuses '51 and '61 that she was born in North Kelsey....but on the '51 she says she's 49 (born 1802) and the '61, she's 63 (born 1798)

Thanks again,
Yorkslass

Hi pwitz

Thank you once again for your kind offer.

I have 6 children baptised in Grainthorpe
Robert 30.10.1791
Richard 16.3.1794
Ann 26.7.1795
Innocent 30.12.1796
Christiana 25.12.1798
Thomas 4.1.1801

on Hugh Wallis all children of John Lee and Mary

Would you be able to look for a marriage for John and Mary in Grainthorpe just before 1791 so that I can cross Grainthorpe off the list or otherwise?  I have not been able to find a marriage so far

Thank you

Kerry

Added - Geoff E has kindly pointed out to me a marriage between a John Lee and Mary Hodgson in Marshchapel in 1774 which could be a possibility although that makes Mary 49 when she had Thomas!

I believe Marshchapel is not far from Grainthorpe and there are several children to them in Marshchapel and continuing in Grainthorpe.  So if a later marriage could be found that would discount that possibility, again or otherwise.

Hi

John Dickinson, married in Saxilby in July 1783

5/7/1783 to Frances Wistow (IGI) or 6/7/1783 to Frances Wiston (Free Reg)

Confirmation of correct Bride surname would be great, along with any other details.

Does entry confirm parish of origin for John ? Think it to be Newton on Trent if not Saxilby itself.

Thanks in advance

Hi Polly, sorry me again.

I have another John Dickinson, married a Fanny/Frances circa 1758 in Newton on Trent. A stab in the dark, but if any chance, any info would be great.

No worries if too difficult.

Confirmed marriage of Frances Surfleet & Edward Campbell 14 Mar 1825.
Extra details: - Edward was a widower.  BOTP. Witnesses: - Wiliam Peel (his mark) and Martha (? dirty mark over name) Surfleet (her mark)

Confirmed baptism of Frances d. of John and Mary Surfleet at Swinhope (St. Helen) on 14 February 1802.

Looked up North Kelsey baptisms and found: -
22 Sept 1799 Francis the bastard of Mary Surfleet (the 'son' not there)
10 July 1808 Joseph the bastard son of Mary Surfleet

Hope this helps.

Polly

Confirmed marriage of Thomas Barton to Ann Ashley.  No mention that he was a widower.  BOTP. He signed, her mark.  Witnesses: - William Barton and Thos. Boane

The only burial I could find was on 8 May 1664
Margaret wife of John Barton.

Not much luck here.  Could only find the Mary Hodgson marriage on 9 June 1774.  John Lee was of the Parish of C****ington (not good on the geography of that area to hazard a guess at it)

No luck, I'm afraid.  Looked in Crowland and Spalding PRs for around that time and didn't find any Limming at all!

Sorry.

Polly

Just looked on IGI and seen that John Limming m. Jane Scotney 29 May 1837 at Tallington (will have to get my map out and see where that is), but will try and look at the entry next time I go to the Archives.

Confirmed marriage of John Dickinson to Fanny Banebridge (on the entry) on 9 November 1756 at Newton -on-Trent.  BOTP. He signed, she also signed but as BAINbridge.*
Witnesses: - John Howard (possibly a curate as he frequently signs as witness) and Christopher Tollit (or Tollet).

* Another entry written as Banebridge was signed as BAINbridge.

Re the 1783 marriage of John Dickinson to Frances Wistow - the fiche was missing or mis-filed.  When I told a member of staff on my way out, she then showed me the written registers where Frances is written as WistoW.  But without seeing the actual entry we'll never know - a 'loose' n could be mistaken as a 'w'.

Thank you for looking Polly, at least I can rule out any other possibilities then and I shall investigate further the 1774 marriage.

Thank you  :)

Polly,

It looks as though you had an incredibly busy day!
Thank you so much for the look-ups.  It's given me a bit more to go on, especially the fact that Edward Campbell was a widower, which until today I didn't know, and also the witnesses names.  Now to look for another marriage!

I'm still wondering whether Francis was a Frances - at least I know Mary was his/ her mother, and Mary sounds a bit of a one, doesn't she?  I can look to see if I can find Joseph Surfleet now.  I do love a good mystery!

I'm really grateful for your help, and the time and trouble you took,

Best wishes,
Yorkslass

Thank you again, I've already sent you a PM.  What it proves is that in the three cases you looked up, FreeREG has the wrong information and IGI had the correct info.
