Can anyone help looking up birth information on Stephen Hurrell?
He enlisted in the 48th company of the Royal Marine Light Infantry at Chatham in 1850 and his attestation papers states that he was 18 at the time and born in Essex. I'm afraid I don't know which parish though.
I know from Stephen's marriage certificate that his father was George and was a shoemaker. He was married in Pembroke Dock, Wales in 1840 (where the marines had been posted).
I have tried everything I can think of to look for Stephen and George - but keep hitting the proverbial brick wall. I can't find Stephen's birth information or even a death certificate for George which seems to fit the bill. Any census information I can find on George does not seem to match up occupation-wise either.
Thanks.

If Stephen married in 1840, he can't have been aged 18 in 1850.... ???
Could this be him on the 1851 census? The surname looks like HASSILL, but he's an ex-soldier born in Essex.

Hi Rambler
Yes! That's my man!!
How on earth did you find him with the wrong surname on the census?
I have just today got copies of his attestation papers through and they confirm the parish he came from was Felstead. I did get mixed up with the dates he enlisted though (sorry!). It was 23 December 1829 - he was discharged in 1850!
Thanks so very much for your help! :-)
I still need to try and trace his roots though - but at least I have a parish to concentrate on now!

As he married in Pembroke in 1850, when I couldn't spot him as Hurrell, I tried searching the 1851 Wales census for a Stephen born in Essex - this one popped up. ;)
Good hunting!
