Title: Dean/ Needham in 1841
Post by: brolga on Friday 02 October 09 13:05 BST (UK)
Hello everyone.

I am researching some of my great^3-grandparents:
German Dean b c.1821 (Kirk Ireton) and Elizabeth nee Needham b c.1823.
I have found them -- married -- in the 1851 census using
the Wirksworth records available at http://www.wirksworth.org.uk/CENSUS.htm
(and subsequently) but cannot find either of them in 1841.
I was wondering whether anyone can help with this.

Incidentally, does anyone know the background of the first-name 'German'?

Hi

I see by the 1861 staying with German and Elizabeth Dean is her father down as Thomas Leedham? Which I suppose could be Needham. I can only find one Thomas Needham on the 1841 of the right age , and he is not with his family
There are a couple of Elizabeth Needhams of the right age, but I wouldnt like to say which is which, Your best bet is to get the marriage cert just to make sure who her father is.

Ricky:

Thanks for the effort, ... but that is the wrong German D.
The one I am looking for had parents David & Mary whom I have found in KI in 1841 census.

It seems that German was a common-ish first name amongst that family.

Hi,

The marriage took place at Parish Church, Duffield 28.1.1851, just prior to the Census of 1851.
German Dean              Father = David Dean
Elizabeth Needham     Father  = Thomas Needham

In the 1851 Census, Elizabeth states she was born Biggin, Derbyshire later Census states Turnditch, Derbyshire.

Her Father, Thomas Needham born abt 1788 on the 1861 Census states he was born Bradley, Derbyshire.

Not managed to find the Needhams on the 1841 Census - but still looking.

Ricky:

The marriage certificate has arrived.
Thomas Needham was a labourer.
German & Elizabeth were living in Windley at the time of their marriage in Duffield.
This was wirtnessed by Millicent Needham & Joseph Lee, if those names help.

Ricky:

According to IGI, John & Sarah had a son German bapt in 1827.
Unusual as it is, it was a common family name for the Kirk Ireton Deans.

I am researching the Leedham family and I'm wondering if Elizabeth's name is Leedham not Needham. The 1861 information of fathers name and her birth date and place supports this. Also from the marriage certificate the fact that they were living in Windley where other Leedhams were living and Elizabeth had a sister Millicent.

Hi,

The following births took place at All Saints Turnditch Derbyshire, all are the Children of Thomas & Ann LEEDHAM:-

Benjamin 1815
Milicent 1818
William 1821
Elizabeth 1823
Hannah 1826
Sarah 1829                         IGI BATCH NUMBER C060221

Thomas Leedham consistently gives his name as Leedham, think you need to check the actual marriage
between German Dean and Elizabeth in the Duffield Marriage Register.  It is quite probable that it is
recorded as Needham but it could be an error on IGI transcript.
If in the register it does state Needham, I think this could be an original error as for instance Benjamin
B 1815 also states Leedham.  If a register error, this would also have been carried over to Civil Registration
details.

There is also a patron submitted item for a marriage 27.12.1813 Duffield for a Thomas Leedham to Ann Slater,
which should also be checked in the original registers, as many patron submitted items are incorrect.

1841 Census HO107/197 Book 4 Folio 5 Pg 5  Ashbourne
Leedham Elizabeth aged 20  Female Servant  (age rounded down for this census)

Hi Spendlove
Thanks for the information on the Leedham baptisms. I have information on some of the family from church records and census but I hadn't found Elizabeth Leedham living with her father in 1861 until recently and then there was doubt as to whether she was Leedham or Needham. The information from her marriage certificate leads me to believe that she is a Leedham and gives me leads to follow on Thomas Leedham. I have ordered the PR to check the marriage record.
BTW do you have a connection to Ellen Spendlove bap 1820 in Belper, parents George and Hannah Spendlove?

Hi Barbara,

Sure to be related to George born abt 1791, with a lots of other children apart from Ellen. However
not found the record of his birth only his marriage and children.  He is living in Shottle so must be
a near relative although not my direct line.

There are a number of submitted trees for him on Ancestry, one suggesting he was born in Heanor in
1777 and married in Nottingham this is not correct.

Are you connected to his daughter Ellen?

Hi Barbara,

I have only done a little work on George Spendlove and his children, I did not know that Joseph Flint
had been married previously, would appreciate details if you have them.

When George Spendlove Died he left £100 to Hannah Flint and £50 each to William & James Flint.

Have you any idea who George Spendlove's Parent were?

Any info would be appreciated, you can send by personal message if you wish.

Regards
Spendlove.

so Needham could be Leedham?

There are many of both names in census lists.
Perhaps they were interchangable!

I'm certain that it's Leedham and it's a mistake on the marriage certificate. I have Thomas back to Bradley 1790. German's death certificate has his wife as Mary Leedham.

i have also been researching German Dean and his daughter Mary. Mary was my great gt grandmother. i am unsure as to what information you have of his later life but he came out to Australia in 1889 after his daughter came in 1888. he lived in Toowoomba Queensland and died 24 July 1898. he travelled out on the Merkara on 26 June 1889, arriving in Brisbane. he was aged 66.
