Title: John Rowe GERRY/ John Gerry
Post by: tilly25 on Sunday 01 November 09 13:25 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am trying to find the parents of John Rowe Gerry born 1855 Horrabridge, Devon, died 1916 Devizes, he married Emma Mary Dingle 1859-died 1953 and they had Horace Leonard Gerry born 1889- died1940.

Also wanting to check if they had any other children besides my grandfather Horace Leonard.

Also looking for Emma Mary Dingles mothers maiden name, I know she was called Mary W (middle initial) and was born in Tavistock Devon

Any guidance would be appreciated

Judy

Hi

According to the newly released census they've had no more children other than Horace. The info given in this census simply says one child born one child still living.

1891 RG12; Piece: 1731; Folio 82; Page 10

transcribed as Gerrey  - John R is 31 yrs

As you can see his age is not consistent with b 1855

A bit difficult at the moment to identify him- perhaps you need the marriage certificate to trace his father.  :-\

By looking through censues, a Felix Gerry b Horrabridge shows up so here is a possibility for the family:

1861 RG9; Piece: 1457; Folio: 77; Page: 4

James Frederick Gerrey 37 yrs  Copper Miner b Shepston
Nancy Gerrey 35 yrs b Mary Tavy

Martha Gerrey 10 yrs
James Gerrey 8 yrs
Thomas Gerrey 6 yrs
William Gerrey 2 yrs
John Gerrey 12 days

children all born Buckland M.

Hi

If you look for him in the 1861 and 1871 as John Gerrey bn circa 1861 in Buckland Monachorum you'll find him living in the area/street called the place he later gives as his own birth place.

Lots here for you to think about Judy.

(I love Nancy Ninkavel as a name  ;))

Family Search has an extracted birth and baptism for Ann Nankivell 26th december 1826 and 7th Jane 1827 Tavistock, with parents James and Jane.

1841 has a really feint census with James and Jane (transcribed as James) living in ST Mary Tavy which fits with p o b however, I can't see Ann/Nancy - lots of children though.

If you want this I can post it.

Hi for ref

Births Dec 1858
Emma Mary Dingle         Launceston    5c   39

To confirm her mothers maiden name the birth cert shoud give you both parents names should you want to go that far

Hi

Have managed to get reference numbers to order marriage certificate for John Rowe Gerry, but can't find record of birth with middle name or initial present, would the registers have recorded a middle name or initial ?.

I have looked back at some data that I have and year of birth is 1862 not 1855 (not sure where I got that date from)

looking back at everyones search in the censuses I can't see another John Gerry, unless I'm not looking in the right place.

Hello again,

this may be Ann from 1841 but it doesn't help- she is a widow in 1851 - transcribed as George. It is the same page as the one mentioned earlier.

1851 HO107; Piece: 1883; Folio: 115; Page: 20

Is this it? I have Anc. so it is feint for me too so just posting what I see

James (female) has been corrected by two people to read Jenifer/Jennifer. There is a downward stroke in the name - possibly 'f' but I couldn't be sure.

Hi
Thanks for that, I am trying to prove that Nancy Nankivell may have had a first name of Jane- found that information on an ancestry tree that fits in with everything else

Jennifer/jane was born Nicholls, married Lt James Nankivell 1820. they had a total of 13 children,  there are 3 Nancy Nankivells, I'm assuming the one born 1826 and married james Gerry is yours?
 Nancy Nankivell
Event Type:   Baptism
Christening Date: 27 Apr 1826
Christening Place:    Tavistock, Devon
Father's Name:   John Nankivell
Mother's Name:   Mary Nankivell
The father John married Mary Bawden/Bowden1809 with 7 children that we know of.  I'm afraid the Nankivell researchers cannot agree on where the 'John' fits in.
