Hi All..
I wonder if anybody could advise or assist me finding out about a great uncle of mine who according to family information died in Castlerea prison back in the 1950's.. His name was Thomas Ward originally from Artane Cottages in Dublin .. I emailed the irish Prison service but they have not replied ..
Any help appreciated .. Anthony

have you found his death on the civil index ?
The familysearch site includes details up to 1958

I've had a search through the Times and have not been able to locate any mention of death a prisoner named Ward in Castlerea during the 1950s..

Hi Shane
Thanks for going to the trouble to search for information for me you really are a Star .. just wondering Is there any other prison in Roscommon ??
My uncle who gave me this information is fairly sure of the circumstances . I'm thinking he may have been a prisoner but may have been moved to a hospital where he died . A lot of " what if's".... would death cert give actual place of death or just town or area ?
Thanks for all your help... Anthony

a death cert would give a detailed address for place of death... which could be a hospital if he was moved there, but I think the fact that he was a prisoner would be mentioned.
I am not sure of other prisons in Co. Roscommon other than Castlerea..

there's one likely looking one on FS site date of birth about right ,, Might be worth getting death cert to see if it is right one but its a bit of a outside bet ...
Many thanks ... Anthony

what's the year quarter for this ?
(might help to narrow down the newspaper search...)

It's Thomas Ward ... Vol 3....Pg.143.. July/September 1954
its the only one which ties in with his birth year of 1907
again thank you ..

there's nothing that I can see for that quarter in the deaths listed in the Times... it could have been in another paper, but I would have thought that the death of prisoner would be mentioned in a national paper like the Times..
might be worth chancing that cert - if the DOB matches

There was no jail in Castlerea in the 1950s ,the nearest being in Sligo. If the person in whom you are interested was only arrested then he could have been detained in the local Garda Barracks if the matter was minor or else removed to Roscommon Town where the Divisional Headquarters were. If he had died in the custody of the Garda then it is not unlikely that the Coroner was informed.
